Experimenting with the high-res mode on the G9... not that you can really appreciate the extra detail after downsizing and compressing for the web.

Sorry to hear that Mike, but I would rather be stuck in Costa Rica than most other places. His unintended extended visit to CR could result in a treasure trove of wonderful bird images!

BTW the bird in that shot could do with a little more exposure to make it pop.

I can't take credit for this one. My parents are currently "stuck" down in Costa Rica. My Dad sent me this shot to run through Topaz.

Thanks. Added more exposure. My parents did make it back. I put "stuck" in quotes because the family condo in San Jose is bigger and more comfortable than any of our homes here in the US. The worry was getting back to health care here in the US. Otherwise they would have been happy to stay there while this pandemic rages here in the US.

I think yours is a female bird (lighter plumage), and we have sunlight, blue skies, and cleaner water over here.

Seriously cool photograph, Wilbus! Great idea, beautifully rendered (a great stock image, I wonder?) - What is that glass contraption anyway?

Thanks for posting

damn this thread, seriously, damn. this. thread.

I've spent who knows how much on sony gear and never considered mft. The shots everyone has posted here are ridiculous. I stumbled over here looking for shots out of the 300f4 (becasue a fe600/f4 gm is $12k) and now I'm questioning my entire life. Full regret mode.

I hate all of you.

Joking of course. Great shots.

Glad we can help you hate us, at least that gives my life purpose

I had a quick stumble in with Sony back with the Sony A7, the sensor was great. I hated the camera and the system, it was terrible. I have since tried all their A7 models and the first one that felt "Ok-ish" in my hand was the R IV. They've done an amazing thing with their camera business in just a few years and now have the most developed lens system a part from m43 (when it comes to mirrorless) but their cameras and lenses and system just lacks soul to me.

I shot with Olympus from 2012 to 2019 when I switched to the G9 and kept all my Olympus lenses and for the first time since my Nikon D700 I felt completely, 100% in love and satisfied with the camera. Pretty much everything with it is "right" for me and there are lots of superb functions that I had never thought of in a camera (or any other brand had thought of either it seems like).

If you've spent a ton of money on Sony I am sure selling it and spending it on MFT will get you almost all you want (just making your life harder, I know).

This is a straight out of camera (resized for FM) from the G9 with the superb Panasonic Leica 25mm F1.4 at F1.4. I'm using the L-Monochrome D JPG setting. This is also my all time favorite camera for JPG, in fact, I've never liked any JPG profiles before but with the G9 and the changes they made to color science in it compared to their GH series has shown me a few really nice JPG alternatives.

For the first time in very long I shoot JPG and RAW and actually sometimes use the JPG's.

And one processed from RAW with some added grain.

It's taken me over three years since I met my girlfriend but she is finally accepting me more and more when I use her as a model and in most cases both smile and laugh, in this shot I wanted none of that but was after a more thoughtful mood.

These are great. I previously used a fuji xt2 for years and that profile definitely has that acros feel to it. I agree about the jpegs, but those tones are hard to beat and even harder to replicate in post at times.

I’m convinced, going to pick up a G9 and that 25mm prime.

Any thoughts on the leica 200mm or the oly 300f4? I’m torn.

The PL 200mm f2.8 is much more affordable than the Olympus 300mm f4 right now (and the PL lens works much better at 200mm and at f2.8 than the Oly lens... )

Right now I'm struggling with shooting three different camera systems, and it's proving to be a challenge going back and forth between the different bodies. I like the Olympus OM-D E-M1X more than I thought I would, but the Panasonic G9 just seems so much easier to use. However, if the price on the Oly 300mm f4 was a little more reasonable, I might be swayed more in that direction...

Thanks for the feedback!

Where are these much more affordable pl200/2.8’s you speak of? Do you mean they're popping up on the buy/sell at good prices?

B&H certainly isn’t having a deals...

There were a couple for sale on the Buy and Sell forum a few weeks ago at reasonably good prices. Prices in Canada are lower right now, too... if you're serious about getting one, I could be tempted to sell mine...

Purple finch... not quite as sharp as I would like, but hopefully it looks acceptable at this size. Exported using the "optimized for Instagram" preset in Capture One 20, which seems to kick it up a notch...

Edit: corrected the bird ID

Molson, this is really cool. I think what you have photographed is a Purple Finch. A House Finch has reddish-orange color and a Purple Finch has reddish-purple. Other than that they are quite similar. See the House Finch below. I have been looking for a Purple Finch.... but all I see are House Finches in my area.
