p.1 #1 · Official Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L Image Thread

Why doesn't Canon forum have an image thread for this lens? I'll start!

p.1 #2 · Official Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L Image Thread

I rented the EF version of this lens once and absolutely loved it. So much so that I ended up buying a used one. Unfortunately, the one I bought wasn't nearly as sharp as the one I rented so I ended up selling the one I bought. I had been debating ever since whether I should try to find a sharp copy of this lens. Then the RF version of this lens was announced. Based on the reviews I've read, the RF version of this lens doesn't have the sharpness inconsistencies that was rather common with the EF version. The RF version of this lens will be one of the first RF lenses that I get once I get a Canon mirrorless body.

I mean, part of the problem here is now this lens specific thread is for two dramatically different lenses.

They're both 50 1.2's, just how dramatic is that
I don't think he was talking comparing IQ's so much as showing creativity with OOF or Bokeh in the images?
At least that's what I read into it!!

Fair enough. I was just thinking it is not very often a thing you see happen with such different lenses. There’s no Canon 70-300 Nano USM and L thread. But you are right.

Quite dramatic. The EF was my most hated lens ever, due to the completely unpredictable focus, even the focal plane not being something to write home about, and the OOF area not being on the same level as many competitors. I eventually traded it for a Sigma Art and life was much better, every shot.

Compare that with the RF: based on my huge amazement with the 28-70/2L, I tried the RF 50L, and holy smokes that's one amazing lens, every single shot. The Art was immediately sold.

I'll contribute some shots to this thread tonight when I am at my photo computer and not at work.

So, here are some EF50/1.2L photos, as a whole and as a 1:1 crop. It was difficult to find any[/] photos at f1.2 simply because it was so frustrating. Trust me I looked for the best ones. These photos show exactly what I hated about the lens - the dreamy look, and not in a good way.

Now here's the new contender. Love. It. Problem is that most of the photos are of my wife and daughter and I'm under strict orders not to post these, so the pickins are limited.

Those lenses have nothing in common. Nothing. The EF had no right to be born.

Here's one I like from the 5D + 50 / 1.2L:

I mean, it's a fair point he brings up. The designs of those lenses are dramatically different. The OP might as well just ask for any photos taken with any 50mm lens from any lens mount on a canon body.

Edited: no more RF images allowed here.
You pixel-peepers kinda annoy the heck out of me but it's very reminiscent since I was the same pixel-peeping-noob way about five years ago

I don't care about sharpness. That's NOT to say I don't care about OOF; that is my biggest pet peeve.
I must say I love the 50L for it's rendering and also... the softness at 1.2. Less photoshopping to do
For this very reason I still love and miss my good ol' 58mm f/1.4G when I shot Nikon.

This super random assortment of images are all from years ago, shot with either a 5DMKII or MKIII. This lens occupies a special place in my mind, so I'm thinking about picking one up again, but using it on a R or RP. Anyone have any experience with the lens on either camera?

I like the look of the 50 1.2.
There's something to be said for sharpness, when sharpness is called for. Sharpness isn't always the main attraction. I'm not much of a pixel peeper but that does not mean I sometime don't demand extreme sharpness, or at least sharp-enough!!
Here are a couple 50 1.2 contributions.....

I just bought the EF over the RF version—which I use with the adapter ring on my R.

The RF has a clear advantage when shooting wide open as the image is sharper from corner to corner then the EF 50mm 1.2L. However when both lenses are stop down to f2.0 they are equally as sharp. The primary difference, and reason why I went with the EF version, is that I liked the way it renders. Also the EF lens on the R is actually quicker and more accurate to focus then on the 5D Mk IV—not sure why that is.

From the tests by Photozone, looks like the RF lens is sharper at 1.2 than the EF one is ever going to be, even at its best apertures (though the comparison isn't very scientific due to the very different sensors used for testing). Pretty amazing really.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I never had any problems with the sharpness of the 50L. It was plenty sharp to me, and like you, I love the way it renders. Looking forward to getting my hands back on one after many years away.

I think it is mostly due to the difference in distance to the film plane. If you've ever lowered the head of an enlarger to get the lens closer to the paper, just sayin' that the angle of projection / collimation / ISL is in play. Cutting the distance to the film plane in half ... well, you can do the math.
