I don't know how well these are going to come out or if they're useful, but I didn't have much time to put the news lens through more than a couple of quick shots of Leo my stuffed long-eared owl.
I'm going from the 600 v1 to the 600 v3, so maybe the difference between version 2 and 3 isn't as big, but for me the purchase is worth it just from a weight perspective alone. I'm pretty sure I can hand-hold this lens indefinitely whereas with the old lens I was good for about 30 seconds maximum. Even my wife is having no problems hand-holding this lens and she is tiny.
The other really nice change is the minimum focus distance improvement.
I'm heading out tomorrow to hopefully find some live owls and if I'm successful I'll post some results here. Any requests for what people would like to see in terms of comparisons etc?

Side by side 600 III vs 600 II, 600 III is on the left...
Need a new lens coat...
Screws on the foot seem flimsy to me.
The 600 II looks to be a hair longer, I just eyeballed it.
Oh, give myself a plug here.. the version II needs a new home....

Would love to hear your assessment on the lens and how it takes TC. 1.4x and 2.0x.

I'm mostly curious as to where one obtains a stuffed owl?
Taxidermist or children's store...depending on how real you want it to look
I was offered a N. Hawk Owl (obtained from roadkill) from a taxidermist but declined as I was moving and it wasn't easy to transport on its fancy perch.

In my experience, 600 II is the sharpest lens of all "big whites" ever, and the only ones that match it are 300 II and 400 DO II. If 600 III can replicate the 600 II resolving power and contrast, that would indeed be some accomplishment for Canon.
Therefore, if you post shots with your new 600 III, can you please indicate the % cropping which should help to judge the lens IQ better.

Good to see the tripod collar/foot(where I handhold) is moved toward the body. I guess since the heavier glass are moved toward the body, it just make sense that the foot is also moved the same direction.
