I am super impressed bu the z6!! Af is not bad at all!! I am loving the tack sharp picture without doing any micro af adjusment!! I tried my 35 and 50mm sigma art, both work great, nikon 85mm 1.4g, 200 f2 vr, 300mm pf f4 and 600 f4e all work beautifully with 1.4 and 1.7 tc!! I am a happy camper!
Evf is amazing, I love it!! Much more then I thought. I will post some picture soon!!
Fleetwood Mac... z6 with 200-400. Should have brought a converter, all of these are atleast 50% crops, some like 70%. testing the higher isos now. iso500-6400. NR off. I left them as is, didnt want to oversharpen and didnt want to get the file muddled with Noise reduction. It can resolve pretty darn well for iso6400 and atleast half of the image cropped. i think i could get very usable files up to 10,000. after that the image details get pretty mushy in lower light, if you need to crop, if you dont need to crop, and are viewing on web or printing smaller than 5x7, you can probably stretch it until about 25k or so, but dont think about cropping in more than 20%, and dont bring it up too close to your face.
It seems like they are all made by the same company. Wipes and stuff all look the same. I tried two boxes wit two, each screen protectors. After application, various size bubbles under each one. Finally ripped off the last one and threw them away. $40.00 down the drain.
Played with a rental Z6 for a couple of high school hockey games. It focused well with my 70-200 II. It was quick and tracked very well. Took a ton of frames of skaters coming up the wing straight at me at high speed, and the focus never missed a beat. I shot everything in dynamic and my first impression is that it's the best dynamic mode I've used, which includes the D500 but not the D5. And it's a good thing it tracks around the frame because in longish bursts the viewfinder can't keep up. Many times I lost the action because I was no longer seeing it.
The only thing that really bothered me was how long it took for the EVF to come back to life. Missed some shots because of that. If I get one of these I'll just have to adapt and get into the habit of keeping it on.
Ergonomically, it's a mixed bag. It's little, which is nice. But it's maybe too little. I have to curl my pinkie under the body because there's no place for it to go. That doesn't really bother me because it feels natural, but for some reason my wrist is sore today.
Another game today, so I'll crack open the manual and see if I can do something about the stuttering viewfinder.
So I went for a walk around the city last night mainly with intentions of testing the camera, not necessarily trying to get something I could hang on my wall. Conditions were very overcast, no moonlight, and about 2.5 hours after sunset, so 99% of the light I dealt with was artificial.
All images below are sooc with no editing, shot in RAW but exported directly to high-res JPG. EXIF info should be attached.
First image was at a cemetery with a road running along the right side of the frame. Light available is from streetlamps. This photo is crazy to me because with my eyes, I could barely make out the grave headstones in the foreground. It was very, very dark, so much so that my friend and I spent less than 10 minutes there before we were confident we weren't going to get anything.
Second image is 100% crop of my focal point, using AF-S single point, it was basically the only place in the middle of the frame where I could get any contrast. Third image is just another 100% crop from elsewhere in the image. I'm just impressed that I got anywhere near as much detail as I did. The noise performance is pretty impressive for me.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, this was also handheld with IBIS on.
I’ve been following this thread with the intent to buy soon. I’m a little concerned about some of the IBIS impressions and informal tests done here and whether Nikon has all the bugs worked out on their first implementation of it. I’m curious how many here rely on it all the time vs only as required or even not at all. I’m also curious if anyone has done their own personal evaluation of it (trying both on and off for the same shot sequence) and the results of that. IBIS is a great tool if implemented properly. However if it’s problematic, I’d just as soon have a hard mounted sensor than one with IBIS turned off. My personal usage will include using it with all my non-stabilized lenses up to and including my FD 300/2.8L which will benefit the most from it. I know IBIS with longer lenses is less effective, but I need all the help I can get with that one!
If the IBIS does turn out to have issues, there’s no guarantee a software or firmware update would fix it.
Who loves it? Especially those who have come from Oly land whom I’ve heard has a stellar version.
Some nice images here showing what the Z6 is capable of. I have a D850 and when I want to go light I grab my Fuji X-T2 which I love. Just have to decide whether a Z6 would be a better choice to take along with my other Nikon gear instead of the Fuji.

IBIS is the only thing which makes me concerned with Z6, and I already posted my findings earlier.
I'm little frustrated that nobody else is reporting anything similar to my findings.
Practically, IBIS is useless at shutter speeds like 1/60-1/125 (this may go wider, but I focused on these, potentially used a lot in my case), and mechanical shutter. Electronic first curtain or full electronic shutter is fine, IBIS helps a lot.
Yes, thank you. I was specifically referring to your posts and I was also disappointed that it didn’t elicit more discussion. It would be nice to know if your issues are what we need to expect across the board with the Z cameras.

Just got my camera last night and i've been doing some testing!! Love the face af, seems to work really good. I miss the D850 46mp but love the rendering of the Z6, nice colors.

Ran into my first weirdness with the camera today. In Viewfinder priority i was having trouble getting the lcd monitor to playback, the only thing displaying was the viewfinder, Prioritize viewfinder has always allowed me to use the viewfinder until i hit another menu or play button and then the screen would turn on, tonight that didnt happen. it was weird. only thing ive done differently was i had the LCD protector on, but i doubt that has anything to do with it, ill investigate further tomorrow.
