Has anyone sold or traded their Batis 25 for the Sony Gm? Sales guy at my local store called today and told me mine came in. I’m still within my return period with my batis. Any thoughts from those who’ve had both? I’ve watched all of the YouTube videos but no one has really nailed a good comparison yet.
I sold the Batis 25. To me it was well worth it. Like the Sony much better. If it was me I’d return the Batis 25 . Resale on it also dropped pretty heavy
Hi thedwp,
I used the Batis 25 intensively for 2 years, it's a great lens, it was my favorite one......but in November I bought the GM24 and I made some comparison along 2 months, the GM is clearly better almost about everything, at night time it's a dream to shoot with it.
So at the end I sold the Batis and I've a new favorite one glued to my camera.
While I can't compare the two (Batis 25 2 and Sony 24 1.4) directly, this thread and the resultant GAS of which I am a sad victim stimulated me to go back and review my perception of IQ on my Batis 25. Last night I spent an hour in Lightroom reviewing shots taken with my Batis. I came away remembering just how good the Batis 25 really is, and thinking that while the 24 1.4 may be sharper, faster and less prone to CA, it is really hard to justify spending $900 on top of the measly $495 B&H offered for the Batis to get a copy of the 24 1.4....
I only very recently purchased a RRS tripod, tripod head, and a Batis 135, so my wife is viewing my GAS a whole lot more cynically these days....and only one year until retirement with a goal of paying off our mortgage in the next 12 months. TMI, I know. Sorry. Talking to myself and you all simultaneously here...
So for now, unless I get some unexpected $$$ windfall, I'm going to hold.

I loved my Batis 25, but the Sony GM is just a bit better in every way. I haven't missed the Batis at all.
The Batis is excellent. It produces beautiful photos. Don't fret. Everybody loves the newest lenses, until there's another to swap it for. Wait til the Sony 135 comes out, people will chuck the Batis 135 like a Christmas tree in January.

Forgot about this thread...moving my comparison here.
Sony 24GM f/1.4 vs Canon 24 f/2.8 IS
Just because..
Seriously, I'm a landscape shooter and was curious how these two lenses compare at infinity.
All processed with Adobe lens profile corrections disabled, except for the built-in CA correction on the Sony GM.
Conclusions
f/2.8: Sony slightly sharper at center, Sony sharper at midfield, Canon sharper at edge. Sony much sharper in the corners
f/4: Similar at center, Sony sharper at midfield, Canon sharper at edge. Sony much sharper in the corners
f/5.6: Similar at center, Sony much sharper at midfield. Canon sharper at edge. Sony sharper in the corners
f/8: Similar at center. Sony sharper at midfield. Similar at edge. Canon slightly sharper in the corners
Composite image comparison of center, extreme edge, and extreme corner
The Sony exhibits much less CA than the Canon but this partly a function of the built-in CA corrections on the GM, which is embedded in the Sony raw and applied unconditionally by Adobe. The only way to disable this correction is to strip the built-in profile from the raw file, which I did below to demonstrate the before-and-after of the CA correction:
I had the Canon 24 IS and found it inferior to the 16-35 IS and sold it. Kind of a disappointment. I liked the size and weight and figured it'd be optically superior to the zoom, but it wasn't. The 35 IS was much better than the zoom and was a stop faster to boot. Kinda miss that lens, but I'm pretty much all native now. The 16-35 GM is a dream, better than the 16-35 IS, but the 35 2.8 is definitely not better than the 35 IS in any way but size.
How do you use circular screw filters with the 24mm GM?
Normally, I screw the filter on the lens and then put on the lens hood. This does not work with my filters (Hoya HD and Breakthrough) on the 24mm GM. Is it perhaps because the filters are too thick, or do you have to screw the filters in the lens hood (would be annoying)?
Damn Fred, some exceptional images here. You are making me second guess myself about passing on the 24 GM. Starting to talk myself into buying one for travel over the 24-105 zoom even. Hell, you're making me reconsider my travel kit completely and have me seriously thinking of just grabbing a few primes...and I'm a zoom guy!
