Just got the rugged bag. $99 on B&H fits lens with hood and camera body attached. Holds camera extra secure and lots of padding. Zero complaints

Thinktank and Kinesis holsters aren't tall enough. Lenscoat 3Xpandable bag is but isn't really padded.

Nice shots Mukesh!! What made you decide to shoot the 400 over the 600? Do you ever feel when looking through your 560mm shots with the 400GM that you are giving away some IQ compared to if you had used the bare 600GM instead?

Also do you find the 400GM easier to handhold for the day than the 600? Weights are very similar but I was wondering if the shorter, more compact size of the 400 makes it an easier handholding lens?

Geoff,

- I haven't see any IQ degradation with 1.4X on 400mm, It normally stays on it, except early morning and late evening.
- 400MM +1.4TC versure 600mm, I haven't noticed any difference, again I am not critical like you but end of the day when I browsing through all shots in LR, I haven't noticed any difference.
- Hand holding the 400mm versus 600mm, not much noticeable difference, except having 600mm being long, you have to be more careful moving around with it.
- More I use the 400mm, more I like it, it is my travel lens and much used for wildlife refuge visits. 600mm is used mostly for the conowingo dam because given distance to the subject.
- Why do I use 400MM = 1.4 TC, Normally at Conowingo, I have 600MM + 1.4 TC on the tripod/gimbal for distance shots. I keep 400mm or 400MM + 1.4 TC, depends on the day and bird behavior, for close approaching shots . Also having it in hand, it allows me to go as low as possible.
- Some time, if the activit is moving around too much, I carry both lenses on my should so I can be mobile. I have carried it that way for whole day , 8 + hours. end of the day I do get tired but it's perfectly doable.

Here is the pic taken by somebody at Conowingo and sent to me. Just for fun...

Hoping some owners can weigh in on this, I keep going back and forth on this lens replacing my current setup with my Canon 600 f/4 IS II. Is there really that much quality lost with the 2x converter on this lens that I’d notice a significant difference between it and my 600 with a 1.4x? I keep thinking how nice it’d be to have a more compact setup with closer minimum focusing and with the a7r IV’s crop mode I really wouldn’t need to have a 600 to get to 1200mm. Just wondering if that’s more realistic in theory than in real world use.

Thanks. Impressed!

Owning the FE 400/2.8 + 1.4x TC I am glad you rank it similar to the FE 600/4.

400mm GM is great lens, I was on trip to Florida last week and it rained much of the time, the 400mm f/2.8 really saved my trip and allowed me to shoot in overcast rainy days without much problem. I have 600 and 400 and if I have to keep only one lens, I would go for 400 2.8, it's very versatile lens and it's performance with 1.4TC and 2X TC is great. It will stay with me for a long time.

Also, all my Sony gears were exposed to rain much of the time ( forgot rain cover) and it's still functioning, will find out in couple of months!

Happy holidays!

Mukesh
