OSS mode 2, fast shutter for the BIFs.
Practice your aim: the bird needs to stay in about the same spot in the viewfinder while you are panning with it. Slow drift is OK, any faster shakes you should work on. And disable OSS: at these speeds it seems to hurt more than it helps (my experience is with the 200-600, though). And don't forget that some softness comes from the high ISO's needed for the short exposures.
It's a pity to see so few images with this stunning lens, I tested it half an hour in a shop (they let me shoot in the street, with rain too), and I was thinking about beying chased by the clerk with that magic tool
