If you don't want big lenses you have choices - 35/2.8, 50/1.8 and 85/1.8 . It sounds like your biggest gripe is the form factor of the A7rIII. I added the smallRig L bracket and its honestly made a big positive difference in terms of ergonomics especially when I use it with front heavy lenses.
I haven't tried a Z7 but expect it to handle a bit better with front heavy glass due to the bigger grip but with the smallRig L its very usable for me with heavier 1.4 zeiss lenses.
On a different topic, I really like the colors in the Z7 image thread. I didn't care for the out of the box colors with the D850. Sure it can be tweaked in post but that means spending more time in post.

My biggest Sony quirk would be small mirrorless body but big lens. For my personal preference, what is the point of trying to make small body when you have big hugh 35/1.4, 50/1.4, 85/1.4 etc. I certainly scraped my knuckles a few time using 50/1.4 and 85/1.4. Mind you, I have been using Sony since A7r and own all 3 itinerations. Initially I think Sony made a right choice going with 35/2.8, 55/1.8 but then looked like Sony lost its way a bit by going for all the big lenses and not considering how balance the set up is. A7r iii addresses this issue a liitle but not really enough for me. Eventually I stopped buying any more GM lenses and use mostly small manual focus lenses with Sony almost exclusively. 12-24/4 and 100-400 is the exception and the main reason I have not sold my A7r iii(12-24 for quality and size, 100-400 for its exceptional quality) After 3 itinerations, I still find it uncomfortable to use it with big lenses and button layout is still not ideal for me. I still need to take my eye off the EVF often to find buttons unlike Z7 which felt more natural and I adapted to it very quicly. Granted fn1 and 2 took a bit of effort initially but I am used to it now. To my hand, I give Z7 body design a 9/10 but after 3 generations, I would give A7r iii 6/10 at best. Eos R would get 10/10 for body design as far as grip comfort is concern but button layout is just very strange to me. May be if I am more familiar with Canon, I would like it more. SL would be a 7.5 mainly because the grip could be a bit more contoured and while a big chunk of aluminium looks impressive, I just hate to carry around that weight with me all day long.
I dont mind Sony Menu and used to hate flexible focus point on Sony until Sony finally fixed it in mk iii. If Sony makes a bigger body with more space between buttons and substantial grip, I would be very happy.
PS I really have no complain about A7r iii image quality and when there was no choice, I gladly used A7r iii but handling experience now is so much better with Z7. Using my Zeiss 135/2, Milvus 35/1.4, Otus 28/1.4 or 85/1.4 is still a bit out of balance but much easier to handle with Z7 for me.
Not to mention that some Leica M lenses paly quite a bit better with Z7 than A7r iii which is a nice bonus. ...Show more →

Yes, certainly there are some small lenses by Sony that are fine but beside 55/1.8, the rest of the small lenses line up are just fine but not exactly spectacular and they can't really compete with the bigger lenses though. Why spend all that money on 42MP camera and settle for their lesser lenses. Weight is not a concern really. A few months ago, I had a chance to play with 400/2.8GM and A7r iii handheld only and it just felt strange. Honestly, I think both Canon and Nikon found a good compromise between size and comfort for their mirrorless. I am sure Sony body is not an issue for some people. L bracket may help in some cases but for my hand, I really need chunkier grip not adding length to the grip to make it comfortable. I only have just a tiny clearance for my fingers around the grip with Sony 85/1.4GM
and as much as I like the lens, it just felt awkward. I like the direction that Sony made from A7r ii to A7r iii but I need just a bit more
I agree with you about Z7 color. In a way, I already really like out of camera output from D850 very much in comparison to D810 especially using AWB 0 but Z7 is even better. Now if Nikon can take care of AF-C in Z7 a bit more, I would be very happy
Thank you sir. Trying to suck a little less every year
I actually just made some large-ish template changes to my site because I thought it was looking a little too similar to every other one, so that’s good to hear

Was testing out the 24-70 f4 S in the studio last week. Damn this thing is sharp. Sorry for the dithering artifacts in the gradient, should have exported it out higher quality.
It is great to the FTZ adapter keeps such big, expensive F-mount glass wonderfully-usable. This kind of compatibility is probably a relief to those who've already invested in the glass, as well as encouragement for those (like me) who haven't yet ... but are saving up to do so. Very nice.

The 400 is much better to be used on the D850 for balance, handling and ease of maneuverability, but the results are better on the Z7 due to accuracy, EFC and IBIS.
