p.3 #1 · Will you buy an EOS R?

I'm waiting on a screamer 5DmkV...40MP, 8fps, 1DXII AF...am I dreaming? I don't think so based on the what the D850 currently offers...

Then in a few years I plan to jump into the mirrorless system after it's dialed in.

No, nowhere near being a functional alternative to my 5DSR or 1DX2 bodies. But I guess this was never the intention, either.

Delivered very nicely in some areas, failed miserably in some areas. Sad to see the usual Canon crippling. Really thought coming into a new segment where you are NOT the leader you would step up your game in certain key areas, but alas leopard finds it hard to change its spots. Even if this is a 6DII class camera more than 5D4, a few decisions are horrible and it’s just too dear. If they are going to offer 3 tiers of mirrorless, say, then this is more palatable, but they seriously need new sensor tech, much much faster AF,

Very well said. Is the A7RIV coming next year before Photokina?

What I hope to see announced by Photokina in May for say a 5D4 class camera to take on A7RIII/Z7:
All new BSI sensor, 36MP, no AA filter, 14EV+ DR, much faster sensor read-out, dual digic 8, IBIS, overhaul of video, uncropped and super 35 options for 4K, new codecs, get rid of mjpeg, zebras, peaking, 1080p @ 120fps, 720p @ 240fps, 7fps with tracking in servo, eye-AF in servo, more AF mode options, dual card, CFexpress, UHS-II, at least 10s RAW buffer, illuminated buttons, e-shutter in servo, improved weather sealing.

Given the R's sensor and its price point at launch, I don't think that we can expect that any time soon from Canon (certainly not by next Photokina). And if it somehow happens, its price will be so high that it won't really be competing with the A7RIII or Z7.

I think that the current R body is where it's at, for quite a while. Despite some of the launch lenses suggesting otherwise.

However, I think that a RF video camera may come quite rapidly. This is an area where Canon's current sensors production capabilities seem less of a hindrance, and I'm wondering if the new mount could open the possibilities for some rigs that weren't feasible with the EF mount - all the while maintaining full compatibility with EF video lenses.

Canon have gone out of their way to stress the potential (and compatibility) of the new mount and potential of future mirrorless cameras but have intentionally crippled the first one. The lens line-up seems to be a statement of intent aimed at keeping current users in the Canon stable ready for potential future releases. As for swapping my 1DXII or 5DIV-not even close.
My real issue is that I have no real desire for more pixels, Canon's latest lenses already perform superbly in pretty much every respect and I still prefer an OVF. Video is of little interest to me. For most people, a leap in sensor technology, high end video features, much faster burst rate, IBIS and better facial tracking (not sure how much RF will help this) would seem the main features which are lacking.
Maybe Canon sees that staying on top will need them to bite the bullet and license some innovative tech from other, more high end electronics oriented manufacturers while working on the finest lens lineup.
Digic generations seem little more than an attempt to mislead consumers into thinking performance etc will improve, whereas in reality the 1DX (II) boasted many times the processing power of other pro-sumer/consumer models but there's been no passage of this power into future releases. This leaves video throughput, intelligent tracking etc at a major disadvantage. That's before considering the 1D series dedicated AF processors.
It's still a case of maximum profit for minimal features, though at least the weather sealing, ergonomics and EVF seem sound.

I ordered

Reason: Did you see those lenses!?

Also... the Eye AF which will be awesome for a lot of portrait shooting scenarios I end up with.

Too pricey I know. Waiting a year would be much wiser. But not as fun...

That's true if you are forging new ground like Sony has been doing these past few years...but Canon just needed to get onto the coat tails of Sony's work and release a generation 3 level camera. Surely they could have put IBIS into the camera...everyone else cracked that egg long ago. Surely they could have released better video support...they already have that technology. Surely they could have released a faster model than 3 fps when tracking in focus...they've done that before.

This crippled release has nothing to do with being new to the technology and everything to do with Canon's culture

Only 3 fps? I thought it was 8 fps?

I voted other. I'd buy it if I were not looking for another 1 DX Mark II or a 200-400 f4.

I will buy it in a couple years, used when I will hopefully be able to get it for about half the price of release. I shoot mostly landscapes and I would pair this with the EF 16-35mm f4 IS lens.

Until then I'll keep enjoying my M6 and 11-22mm.

The EOS-R has potential and I wouldn't mind owning one. I just cannot justify the price when I have a perfectly capable 5D MKIII and 80D already in my camera bag. I'd have to sell both to come close to the price of the EOS-R and while I wouldn't mind selling the 80D, I'm not ready to part with the 5D MKIII.

I don't shoot video and the performance of my existing cameras handles the still images I capture (wildlife, sports, landscapes, family pics). I also have a decent stable of lenses that meet my needs and I'm not too keen on having to use an adapter. I get why Canon went to a new mount, I just wish they didn't. I have to say I like the thinner profile of the camera and can imagine it feels really good in the hand.

If the EOS-R was $300-500 cheaper, I might give it a go. I don't think it's a bad camera or that those looking to pick up an EOS-R are making a bad choice. If I had $4K lying around collecting dust, I'd probably pick one up. But for now, I feel Canon over priced the EOS-R for what you are getting.

For my use I would not buy a new camera without a joystick, it is sad that they did not think the product features out before release. Even the $499.00 Fuji XF10 has a joystick.

I have been waiting on this announcement before making a decision on camera bodies and lenses. I like a lot of things on the R but the 3fps/5fps/8fps AF is a deal killer for me.

I'm thoroughly confused on the direction I want to go with my kit now. I was hoping the R would "check all my boxes" but sadly it missed one.

8 in AF-S mode
5 in AF-C mode in speed priority mode
3 in AF-C mode in focus priority mode

I voted "other" because I'm happy with my 1Dx, 1Ds3 and L's. I specialize in food images so I shoot on a tripod 95% of the time. The EOS R bodies are fairly priced but the lenses are ridiculously priced. According to the roadmap I saw, the better lenses are a year or so away. I am clearly not their target customer.

With the FPS crippled in continuous AF and no eye AF in continuous it's a pass for me. Still looking for the specs of Sony and the ergos/build of Canikon. At some point somebody will put it together.

So far everyone seems stubborn to do it. Canikon is still in protectionist mode and Sony still thinks everyone wants toy bodies.

Wow, 166 votes in, nearly 2/3 are in the No camp. That tells you something (and this is a Canon forum!)

I voted No (forgot which choice, but that hardly matters). I neither have the patience nor wallet to wait for the less-crippled version.

I heard they will update the software soon to allow eye AF on continuous AF. Specs can be better, and not it is not ultimate body to get. But I am leaning towards getting the system. The lens are awesome and I don't mind carrying large glass. The ergo looks neat, with so much customization.

I am surprised that as much as 20% are in the yes camp. That is high even for a normal camera release.

I shoot weddings and never use both slots lol
I fear it invites tragedy to use both

gheller wrote:
Any first generation of a new product / technology is one to avoid IMO.

Look at Sony. Their 2nd gen is leaps and bounds above 1st gen.

That being said, if it had a dual slot, I may take the risk.

As a wedding photographer, *any* camera with only one slot is a "no-go"
