Delivered very nicely in some areas, failed miserably in some areas. Sad to see the usual Canon crippling. Really thought coming into a new segment where you are NOT the leader you would step up your game in certain key areas, but alas leopard finds it hard to change its spots. Even if this is a 6DII class camera more than 5D4, a few decisions are horrible and it’s just too dear. If they are going to offer 3 tiers of mirrorless, say, then this is more palatable, but they seriously need new sensor tech, much much faster AF, improved feature set, radical overhaul of lame video features and quality.
However, I do like the size of the camera, looks perfect, they have used high quality EVF and LCD, camera is well built and has the sealing expected at this level. The lenses look great but two of them are very expensive.
If I was rating this out of 10 then I’d say 6, I’d give it 7 if it were say $1800 which it should be based on features or there absence. I’d give the Z6/Z7 7.5.
What I hope to see announced by Photokina in May for say a 5D4 class camera to take on A7RIII/Z7:
All new BSI sensor, 36MP, no AA filter, 14EV+ DR, much faster sensor read-out, dual digic 8, IBIS, overhaul of video, uncropped and super 35 options for 4K, new codecs, get rid of mjpeg, zebras, peaking, 1080p @ 120fps, 720p @ 240fps, 7fps with tracking in servo, eye-AF in servo, more AF mode options, dual card, CFexpress, UHS-II, at least 10s RAW buffer, illuminated buttons, e-shutter in servo, improved weather sealing.
There is a lot to do to make this a class leader, and don’t forget it’ll probably face off against a Sony A7RIV, so these specs may be insufficient. Still if this was mid-tier and then they intended to replace 5DsII with mirrorless they could go further with that model. Alas we maybe looking at cameras far dearer than competition based on what we’ve just seen.
