p.12 #1 · Will you buy an EOS R?

I pre-ordered the R and plain EF adapter, and according to my tracking number, they're on the way to me now. Should have it by Friday.

None of the poll options matches my answer, because as is typical on internet discussion forums, the poll has convoluted 'reasoning' attached to each option. By asking one question -- "Will you buy an EOS R?" and then applying specific reasoning to each poll choice, the poll is rendered invalid for anybody who happens to have different reasons/motivations for their response. For example, my answer to the simple question "Will you buy an EOS R?" is "Yes." But the reasoning applied to the two "yes" answers in the poll prevents me from selecting one of them, because I don't agree with either statement.

A neutral poll would just ask:

Will you buy an EOS R?
_ Yes
_ No
_ Unsure

If you wanted to gather more information/give more choices, it could be done something like this:

Will you buy an EOS R?
_ Yes
_ Maybe
_ Maybe a different RF mount model
_ Not likely
_ No

The place for reasoning/explanations of poll answers is in the discussion area, here. If there was an answer that matched mine, it would say, "I don't know if I will like the EOS R or not, but I'm buying one to find out."

That's why these polls are meaningless, and also not enough sample size to be of any use. It is like in hockey forums asking you which team will win tonight. It's fun, but you can't take it seriously.

The EOS R is now in stock at the major online retailers. I wonder if that is any clue as to how low the pre-orders were compared to what Canon expected?

If the price was around $1,600 USD or less and I was looking to buy a FF ML camera for landscape photography, I would be giving the EOS R a good look even compared to the A7III. The fully articulating screens Canon makes are brilliant for low and high angle tripod and free-hand work. I really like the idea of also having the shutter close when changing lenses. My a6300 camera is like a dust vacuum and sucks up all the dust in the room when changing lenses.

So in the next days/weeks we may get some more interesting real world information about the new stuff.

Congrats, Canon.

Canon leads in Ken Rockwell's comparison of mirrorless systems:

https://kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm

Though to me this mostly demonstrates how completely useless such comparisons really are. Even if all entries would actually be correct, minor details get the same weigh as important issues.

Many details are very interesting though. For example the Canon support line can at least answer some of the questions for Nikon. Thats very funny.

Wow, that guy really needs to find something else to do, I still remember vividly how he slammed every other camera that didn't use a fully electronic shutter so that he got a flash sync speed in excess of 1/500th (everything else was completely unusable to him)...

The dual slot issue will probably make the R a deal breaker for me at least for now. When the reviews come out and the price gets down around 1500 I may trade out the A7III for one.

I agree that the Ken Rockwell review is weighted strangely. Well everything he does seems to have a happy, great spin to it.
It did get two tidbits on the Canon that I did not pick up earlier:

The sensor has a cover (shutter) for power off. This is a big plus for me and my previous Sony dust issues.

He claims that the 100-400ii af's great and with multiple 1.4x + 2x extenders.

I basically agree with Ken's tally. Each brand has its strengths and weaknesses, but the Canon is poised for a very competitive battle for the top mirrorless FF spot. (Very telling to see all the menu system graphically compared!)

For me, Canon has two current downsides: no IBIS and needing higher rez sensor -- both pretty easy fixes, and word the MP will be remedied soon on more Pro model.

I am "natural" biased toward Canon, having a large collection of EF lenses (including its unique offerings), plus nearly 40 years of use. That says a lot in favor of Sony's imaging and previous lock on quality FF mirrorless -- despite what I consider strong downsides to Sony's ergonomics and menus, I love the images from the Sony.

That said, even this low level Canon has be captivated with the promise of using my L lenses and maybe picking up a couple RF lenses -- I can hit the ground running with a full system, including flashes. I'm sure other advanced enthusiasts and pros will be calculating the same options.

Canon does this every time. They come out with new tech, in a slightly less than top-of-line model. They get all those 'must have' buyers to bite. Then they roll out the bigger and better model, and get the same buyers again.

This next round of EF L lenses is going to be the last. They are going to roll out new lighter versions of all the biggest selling L lenses and that will be it. They will announce they've reached the pinnacle of technology (tech/optic barrier) for that particular lineup and then market the hell out of the 'R' stating that it has capabilities that are far beyond what was possible before. They've already started working this angle. Prepare accordingly. Death of the EF lineup is coming within 5yrs. I'm already saving for all R stuff.

...Show moreExactly. I was planning on waiting for the price to come down on the R, but the more I think about it, the more I think it would smarter to skip the R and get the "super" R, or whatever it will be called, when it comes out sometime in 2019. Maybe Canon will finally catch up with the Exmor sensor and implement a quality IBIS. I wonder if it will be available in a kit version with the RF 28-70 or 50 lens.

Why would anyone have to prepare for the death of the EF lineup if the R camera operates the EF lens flawlessly ? Not so worried here, it's a win-win scenario. New improved lens available plus the massive EF flotilla still works. JP

Then you are falling for your own misconceptions - good for Canon because they will continue their EOS DSLR line far into the future. There are a lot of working pros and amateurs that don't want an energy guzzling mirrorless toy...

I'd sooner switch to Leica than fall for that R hype/fad.

So far the images I've seen from the R look good. I think I'll sit on the fence a while longer, maybe a year or two, and see what the situation is then. Fact is modern DSLRs and their quality lenses are all good so there is no desperate need to for me to upgrade. EF finished? I think it will see me out. For all of Canon's perceived negatives, fragility and unreliability isn't one of them.

RF lenses look nice but the body is lack luster. Come out with a higher end body not gimped and I'll be far more interested in the R line.

No time to go through all 12 pages but I'll buy a Canon ML when I see the NFL and Olympic shooters using them.

I sort of doubt it. I think Canon will discontinue DSLRs if and only if they no longer sell. Not sooner. From what I hear, so far EOS R doesnt sell much at all, so Canon probably wont leave their DSLRs behind too quickly.

Personally I definitely wont get another full frame system. If DSLRs no longer would work, I'd go Fujifilm G. By that point, I expect Fujifilm G to be responsive and fast enough for my needs.

Given how far behind they appear to be in ML tech it's hard to see them making a 1DML in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but if ever there was an event to make a splashy release that would be it however.
