p.11 #1 · Will you buy an EOS R?

Will I buy an EOS R? I guess at some future time I will. Having gone from 400D, 7D and 6D each of my jumps have offered a tangible upgrade on some capability that I needed. Right now my 6D and 24-105L does pretty well all that I need. So what might entice me to part with $3000+? As good as the 6D sensor is I need more DR. I am having to underexpose my subjects in order to stop my clouds and skies blowing out, often the lift back is a step too far. More pixels would also be nice as I like to play with composition in PP (I shoot one off events that can't always be repeated, so I tend to shoot wide and crop later). Surprisingly the 6D AF is all I need, I lose very few shots because of it's simplicity.
My plan is to just sit back, keep on shooting and watch how the big shooters go with the R and R lenses. Those lenses may be more of an attraction than the cameras.
I think it would be a big mistake if Canon locked out 3rd party lenses. I love my Sigma150-600 C, not being able to use that would turn me completely off the R

Not sure if I'll have the money, but the 28-70/2 sure looks appealing. And the 5D4 sensor should be fine.

After many years with Canon EOS 5D I changed ship to Sony A7II - cause it has a much shorter flange back distance and additional in body image stabilization.
Canon R has a longer mount register distance. But larger diameter, so still a bit worse than Sony. No image stabilization, another negative point.

In contrast the Nikon Z has shoter flange back distance, large mount diameter, in body image stablization. So much better thna Canon, and a bit better than Sony.

So I will stay with Sony for some time. Thinking about Nikon - or mirrorless medium format cameras from Fujifilm.
And wait to see what Panasonic will show on the Photokina fair :-)

In some ways the larger diameter accomplishes much the same as a design with a smaller diameter and shorter flange difference. The rear of the lens can be in the same location relative to the sensor plane in either case.

In any case, it is clear that we're going to be seeing top-notch, though not identical mirrorless full-frame cameras from many companies in short order.

For new lenses yes, I know.
A part of my professional work is to design camera mounts together with mechanics constructions department.

But I use a lot of alternative old lenses as hobby, lenses that are adapted or DIY modifed. And there the larger register distance is limiting. The Nikon Z would allow 4 mm more helicoid length for example.
Or a thick 50 mm lens could focus on Nikon to infinity, on Canon only ~67cm maximum.

Interesting to read people's opinions about the R. I've got currently some L lenses with 5D2. I have been thinking about Sony for last couple of months but things changed with R introduction. My local dealer got me a good deal for switching to R and I went for it.

As I'm coming from 5D2 I see R as very nice upgrade that will improve everything over 5D2 and add loads of features and finally let's me forget about focus+recompose. I was thinking about 6D2 too but I prefer the mirrorless cameras over it. Used EOS M + 24L II for a year and it was quite cool combo. Now R + 35 1.8 IS would give some kind of experience for FOV but with a lot better image quality and affordable speed. If I had 5D4 I might feel differently about upgrade but in my situation R seems to be everything I wanted. So I admit to be one of the few who voted for the first Yes - option 😁.

Enjoy your new camera when it arrives. That is great you got a good deal and a camera that fills your needs. At the end of the photographic day that is what counts getting the gear you are happy with.

Thank you! I think this camera will be very nice upgrade for me to have better family, vacation and macro photos. In the beginning I'll only have EOS R with 40 2.8 + 100L but will need to check out if I'll add 35 1.8 or 24-105 to my kit after getting a bit familiar with the camera. Also interesting to see when Canon will have some 100L and 70-200F4 IS options available for RF.

Really tempted to drop my Fuji X-E2 kit (XF 18 2/27 2.8 /35 1.4) and swap my 5DSR for an R, especially a lightly used one.

Would not hesitate much it if I saw more compact RF primes announced.
Yes, I'd love in-camera stabilization, dual slots and the rest, but it is not breaking it for me. 50MP is great, but overkill for most of the stuff I shoot these days. Getting better critical focus, DR and a great EVF for low(ish) light are enough to "compromise" for 30MP.

I was hoping, evidently in vain, that the first Canon mirrorless full frame would be the 5Ds/R replacement or would at least exceed the 5D4 by using a new sensor. At this point, I've not seen word one way or the other if the 5DsR follow-up will stay with the current DSLR platform or not.

Some "thank the gods" about the R and R system thus far:

  1. RF f/2 and f/1.2 glass is impressive
  2. They didn't base the sensor on the 6DII
  3. The AA filter appears less aggressive than the one on the 5D4, either that or the RF glass + sensor-proximity + focus accuracy is so good, it makes it look that way.
  4. Canon seems willing to adopt a more Fujifilm-way of releasing features and significant improvements via firmware. This last point is pretty huge and gets mentioned, but not near enough gravity is placed on it.

The only really bad thing about the R output I'm seeing is banding when doing extreme shadow lifts. Leica had this with the Q and was able to fix it in firmware, so hopefully Canon can sort that out.

No, don't see anything compelling about the R, but there again, I shoot with a Rebel anyway!

I'll give it a definite "maybe". Not right away, but there are a couple of compelling lenses that might make it worth while a year or two down the road.

The 400L IS III and the 1D X III should last me 20 years, so, when I am 83 I will consider the EOS R.

I ordered the Nikon Z7 mirrorless + Z 24-70MM + FTZ ADAPTER + Z 35MM F/1.8 S when I saw them in stock last night. Should be a nice companion to my Nikon D850 and I have a lot of Nikon mount glass around. I'm happy with the D850 sensor and the Z7 should be very similar. This will be my first attempt at mirrorless so it'll be a learning experience.

I haven't decided on the Canon Z yet. I love the Z system specs so far. But I should probably wait until they release a pro Z body next year. But that doesn't mean impulse won't take over once they are in stock. I may just jump into a Z when they are in stock and sort it out later when a pro Z body comes out. The Z lenses look like a lot of fun and the Z road-map looks to be impressive.

I’ll probably end up getting the R.
I don’t own a FF body and haven’t upgraded cameras since my 1D4.
I’m was really hoping for a 1DX3 or 7D3.

I am weak!

I saw the R with the kit lens in stock and bought it this morning. I couldn't hold out. I also found the EOS to R adapter in stock so I picked that up. So by next week I'll have the Z7 and the R - should be fun

If you are 83, I recommend a cell phone, or M50 if you insist on a interchangeable lens camera.

This seems awfully judgmental and restrictive. Lots of photographic options these days. I'm a child at 71 and still figuring out cell phones, but I've got my 5D4 nailed.

I might have, if they Canon had put this out a couple years ago instead of the mirrorless they had then. Since then I've loaded up on Olympus and I'm happy. I'd like to get my hands on an R, tho, for comparison. I think I'll like the size of my Oly's better. The R with the 24-105/f4 lens is quite a bit larger
than my EM1.2 + 12-40/2.8.
