Great images arbitrage, as always, you bring the best out of any lens or camera...there is a big surprise this morning, this lens is $300 off in US and Canada!
Bumping this thread because the lens that good.
I went to catch the last of the crane migration through the upper midwest. This spot is about 70 minutes NE of my home and has a beautiful mix of wetland and southern Boreal Forest. Called the Pine Barrens, this region of WI has bear, an active wolf pack, and even fisher. Between 8000 and 10,000 cranes migrate through the Fish Lake and Crex Meadows area each October and hang on until a hard frost. While we've had 20 degree weather and snow already, last week's 70 degree days and warm nights have held some birds in place. Saturday evening I saw fewer than 1000 cranes, but the ones I did see gave us a nice "show."... last shot is not w/ the PF, but gives you a look at the landscape.
regards,
bruce
They’re a rarity here in Maine too. I recall seeing them just twice in my life (both times in winter and in small group...was yours in a group?). Mine were at a distance.
The bright, flashy rear ends (when they take off) told me I had never seen this bird... a field guide identified them for me.

Good shots here. Close
They are rare but regular every winter on the north part of the coast of Oregon but this was only the 3rd record for the inland county where I live.
It was a single bird feeding in the crevices of the parking area of the local ski area. Pretty tame really probably do to the fact it was working on building up its fat reserves. So, yea, pretty close. Never flushed the bird.
