Is that a nightjar??
What a rare find, especially in daylight and among those lovely flowers.
Every once in a while you seem to come up with a real surprise from the avian world

Hi Bruce. It is a Common Nighthawk (which I believe is the term for the New World Nightjars). I was very surprised at seeing it sitting right out in the open of a pathway on a couple of 2x4s that are there to cross the mud when the area floods in the spring. A couple of birders were watching it when I got there and pointed it out to me. The thing just slept even when people with dogs walked right by it. Bizarre.
