Hi Bruce. It is a Common Nighthawk. I was very surprised at seeing it sitting right out in the open of a pathway on a couple of 2x4s that are there to cross the mud when the area floods in the spring. A couple of birders were watching it when I got there and pointed it out to me. The thing just slept even when people with dogs walked right by it. Bizarre.
That's just plain crazy Geoff... Any viewing of a Nightjar or Nighthawk would be one for my list! I've seen a potoo in Costa Rica, but needed a guide to put a scope on it before I could actually see it.
Good for you, as there are not a lot of really good photos of that species. The fact that it was sitting out in the open is really surprising.
cheers,
bruce

There are a number of these in our area. If you go out at dusk they are on the wing catching insects or likewise. But I've yet to get any flight shots of them. My friend up island found a nest this year and followed the chicks. The nest was right on the ground just beside a walking trail.

They always spend the day sleeping but you never see them, they are masters of camo.
