We saw two great grays in pre-sunrise light, but that was it. Tamy and I spent most of our time shooting gray jays at the feeders and ruffed grouse... the grouse numbers are way up. I think I saw nearly 20 ruffed grouse. Those pics were taken with the 200-500, so I will likely post them on that thread.

wonder if our paths crossed?
i had the exact same scenario on new years eve, i grabbed a couple shots of an great gray just before sun up, soon as the sun was fully up the owl flew off into the bush, as i was getting that a guy further up the road was doing the same and that owl also disappeared soon as the sun was fully above the horizon.

i then went to the welcome center for song birds and there was nothing there except or a few chickadees, i talked to another guy later that said the song bird count was way down this year, he also said he saw grouse all over the place. never made it to Mary Lou's

This Boreal Owl attracted quite a bit of birders and photographers near Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, during the Holidays. I was lucky to have somewhat of a clear shot, as the forest was pretty dense there. There was also a Saw-Whet Owl in the very same area.

I was there from 12-27 to 12-29, I think we might have just missed each other. Compared to prior years, the owl activity was very thin while the people searching for owls was very thick. The bog route has become so popular that I will probably spend less time there and more time looking for a few lesser traveled locations in the future. There once was a time where you could find an owl and have it to yourself for an hour or more. In contrast, if anyone sees you pull out a camera now, there will be five or more cars on your spot in a blink of an eye. This type of mobbing impacts the owl's behavior and hunting success. I find that these once tolerant species now retreat into the woods faster than they once did.

Owners...what is the average wait time for the lens to arrive? Is Nikon speeding things up... or are people still waiting months on end for theirs to arrive?

I own the 300PF and love it... thinking of placing an order for the 500PF.

Great shots in the thread

If you're lucky and find the right store, you may get one right off the shelf. Otherwise it seems to be a 1-3 month wait at this point.

I ordered my 500PF from B&H on 4/2/19 and just received it on 12/24. Haven't been able to do much comparison with my 300PF + 1.4 yet, but impressed with what I see and feel so far.

it's in stock in the netherlands. not much but you should have one within a week. but it's a lot cheaper in dollars even when the euro is more expensive. maybe that's a factor,

yea, i got there for first light on the 28th, after a few hours of nothing i headed to my room in Duluth, just as Gage was starting up, i sat out sundays rain storm (least in Duluth, rained all day long) as i figured the owls would be hunkered down.

even the drive home was uneventful, not an eagle anywhere, with all the mountain ash berries was hoping to see grosbeaks or waxwings feeding but nothing at all

i got back in town, few blocks from my place, i look up and there is a northern hawk owl,,,sitting on a damn street light pole

Here's 1st light with my new 500mm PF taken with a D850.

Since Santa did not deliver, the day after Christmas I made a list of US dealers and after 30 calls found one in stock!

I was getting soft results until I realized I was making a rookie mistake of using VR with a high shutter speed.
Any suggestions as to when to turn on VR Sport mode are appreciated!

Nice images! Congratulations on getting the 500mm PF lens! For whatever it is worth, I always shoot with my 500mm PF lens in VR Sport mode, regardless of the shutter speed. However, I never put this lens on a tripod - I am always hand holding it. If I am doing this for an extended period (which is typical), then the image in the viewfinder can get a bit jittery. The VR helps to stabilize the image in the viewfinder. I have never noticed that the VR is causing any image degradation. If I were to lock this lens down by putting it on a tripod, then I would turn off the VR if my shutter speed was around 1/1000th of a second or faster. This is just my usage and my experience. Other people may do things differently.

Thanks for alerting me. Just went out to test mine on a D500 at 19m (20 yards) hand held at 1/1250s of a standard chart using single point AF. All ten with VR on were good. With VR off, all had some discernible shake or were out of focus, possibly because of jittery focus moving off target. Couple of obvious points, any shake gets magnified with increasing distance, and would be less evident closer up or with a subject without fine detail, and the light weight of the 500PF dampens movement less than does a heavy lens. For my type of usage, VR is especially important.

FWIW, I also have mine in Sport VR mode 100% of the time whether I'm shooting 1/100 or 1/4000. But I also have never shot this lens from a tripod.

Many thanks for all of the replies. I'm still not sure if I want to go the F/5.6 direction... or the variable aperture direction with the 150-500/600 zooms. I tried the Nikon 200-500 but end the end I sent it back thinking it was the lens and it turned out to be the camera. I need to give it another try. Then...you have the 500mm F/4's but they are big and heavy. 1st world problems I'll figure this out at some point. The 500PF looks very attractive when you consider the size/weight/performance of the lens.

Thanks again,
Hatch

A second round of photos from my 1st week with this lens.

I have been using a D850 with a Bushhawk stock and exposing f/5.6 at 1/1000 to 1/2000, auto ISO on.

Thank you for the information regarding VR and high shutter speeds, I retested and indeed I can not see any problem with it at higher shutter speeds.

You've gotta be happy with that! Effectively wide open with a 2x TC attached an a crop sensor! Impressive, considering.
