I just returned from Africa including a trip through the Masai Mara. I left my 400/2.8 at home and took the 300/4 PF and this 500/5.6. Wow. That duo is fabulous.
Great shot. Had the young one just swallowed a fish? I’m asking because I saw something similar with loons last week. The parent put its beak just under the chick’s just after it took a fish, as if to help him swallow it.

Not in this image. The adult grebe was actually squawking at another grebe off camera who she was apparently annoyed with. Maybe it got too close to her chicks.
3 years ago I walked my D5 + 400g onto the sand and spent 2 months in back pain. Last weekend I walked my D5 + 500pf onto the sand, 6 outings in a row, no problems except too many in focus shots.
This lens is a game changer for shooting BIF in good light
