p.21 #1 · Pre-order: Voigtlander 110/2.5 Macro APO for $1,099

I am 81 years old and a retired mechanical engineer and amateur photographer. I need not rationalize nor justify my photographic purchases, as my occasional print sales actually buy my equipment, and do not depend on my photo work for family income . I am very fortunate, indeed. I sold all my Nikon and Sony A900 equipment so now use only a Pentax 645D and A7RII. For all my systems I have ultra wide to long telephoto lenses, plus a close up or Macro lens. I recently purchased the inexpensive Sony 50mm Macro. You do get what you pay for, I used it twice and will sell it as soon as I get the Voigtlander 110. I pre ortdered it yesterday (June 23), for August delivery.
I enjoy and learn from this forum. Thanks all.

That is some delicious cream. Wish they had given a portrait sample though.

The news here is the specs on the size. Definitely not light at 771g (so almost 150g heavier than the 65 f/2 macro), but they did keep it just under 100mm in length (so only 9mm or so longer than the 65), and it has the same diameter as the 65 f/2. It is also just smaller than the original 125 f/2.5 APO macro on an adapter. The new lens would have similar weight but probably a few grams lighter depending on the adapter, but the old lens would be about 15mm longer depending on the mount. Interestingly, the 110 macro has a smaller filter size (58mm the same as the older lens) than the 65 macro (67mm), so the 110 matches the filter size of the 40 f/1.2.

So, the specs make this not a small lens, but not a huge lens either. About what you would expect from an f/2.5 Macro. The picture look lovely too and especially the bokeh. I am pretty sure this is one lens I am going to add to my Sony FE kit. It makes a quite competent, if heavy kit with the Loxia 25, Voigt 40 f/1.2, and Voigt 65 f/2.

I'd be particularly interested if you're able to compare to a Zeiss 100/2 makro-planar!

I almost hit the pre-order button on Robert White, but then I remembered that I just got back from vacation and I have the bill to pay . . . .

First Post! I thought I was gonna dip my toes into photography when I bought an A6300 and 10-18mm in November 2017, but I have found this forum and Phillip Reeves' blog since then and next thing you know I have an A7RII, Loxia 21, and a bad case of G.A.S. Thanks everyone.

But seriously, I'm a huge fan of the discussions here - sample pictures and detailed descriptions make it a lot easier to identify which lens to get next and what to look out for. Also huge thanks to Fred on getting the site up and running.

So my question is: would this Voigtlander 110mm macro work in a 2-3 lens kit for landscapes while backpacking? One other lens would definitely be my Loxia 21, but I was also tossing around the idea of picking up a Zony 55mm and/or Sony 70-300 to round out my kit.

I know its not an apples to apples comparison, but I was hoping that your experiences could help me out with the following specific, indirect questions:

- Is 110mm good enough for tele landscape pictures? What about 85?
- How does a macro lens fare in non macro situations?
- How do you compare a macro lens / 1:1 magnification vs. macro attempts with non-macro lenses (i.e. up close subject isolation with a 55mm)
- Does anyone carry a tele zoom for backpacking?

Thanks for helping out! I know a lot of this is subjective, but as someone who is just starting to build out his lens kit and a strong idea of my priorities, I was hoping to draw from like minded folk and their experiences with different lenses in my scenario.

I expect this lens will be awesome landscape lens as the V65 f2 is! I’d love to add it to my kit, but I’m on the fence due to the weight. I’m not sure I’ll carry a V65/2 and a V110/2.4.

I carry a Zeiss CY 100mm f3.5 with a flocked Kipon Adapter while backpacking. It’s a lot lighter than this lens.

Very nice.
Was hoping I'd be able to resist this one. Won't be going in the bag immediately, but it looks like it will be sooner than later.

From that review. We'll see if it this maintains this in other tests!

Really wish they offered stop down focusing on Sony bodies

Welcome to the forum!

This site is really helpful to me when I think about gapping strategies and which lenses to carry. The 55/1.8 is an awesome, small, sharp lens but it's relatively close in FOV to the CV 110. In a 3 lens kit, that would leave a really large gap from the 21 to the 55. I would strongly recommend that you consider a 40mm prime, the CV 40/1.2. It is an incredibly good lens, beautiful rendering, small, built like a tank, and reasonably priced. It's a very popular lens on the Sony forum for a lot of reasons. It would gap nicely with your Loxia and the CV 110. My current landscape/hiking kit is Laowa 15/2, Loxia 21/2.8, CV 40/1.2, and the CV 65/2. The 65 is too close to the 40, but I do a lot of macro when hiking and the 65 is a wonderful 1:2 macro. I'll probably replace the 65/2 with the CV 110 (I pre-ordered), which would gap perfectly and would give me full 1:1 macro to boot.

Many macro telephoto lenses such as the Sony 90 and the CV 65 make great landscape and portrait lenses to boot. Many people, myself included, hike/backpack with a light compact telephoto. Some (see Viramati's images) carry the 70-300 and get great results.

Every time someone replies to this post, I get an email alert and I *pray* it's an announcement re: the 20mm.

Jeeez, c'mon guys! I got some $ set aside specifically for this lens, gets harder every day not to divert it....

Not 100% sure this is what you mean, but if you want to adjust the aperture while in focus magnify without it reverting back to normal view, you can achieve this by taping over the contacts on the lens. I did this on my CV 40/1.2 and I love it. Primitive, sure - and you lose exif info, but you also lose the silly digital distance scale that does little besides clutter up the EVF.

For example, I tried the Voigtlander 40mm 1.2. I want to focus the lens at 1.2 and pressing the shutter stop the lens down to 2.8/5.6. I liked this ability on my Nikon camera, it allowed me to use these lenses during important moments, because even if my focus was off slightly the lens stopping down would get what I need in focus. Drives me crazy that none of the manual focus lenses for Sony's system have this ability to my knowledge.

For this lens I would love to use it for portraits at ~f4 instead of wide open, but knowing I HAVE to focus at f4 kills my enthusiasm.

Perhaps the CV 40/1.2 was a bad example here as it has noticeable focus shift. With this lens, you must focus at shooting aperture from f/1.2 until about f/4.
