Gotcha. Never used a Nikon DSLR, but several of my film cameras have that feature (open aperture metering, DOF preview and/or auto-stopdown) and I can see that it's a handy feature.

Having become adjusted (ok, ADDICTED) to a WYSIWYG EVF though, it's a non-issue for me. Just as easy to use shooting aperture 24/7 and temporarily bump the ISO to see the *true* area in focus.

This feature would be impossible to implement without two-way mechanical communication between the camera and lens, potentially adding weight and cost to the design of both, though. So, I'm thinking I could go without and be ok.

For example, I tried the Voigtlander 40mm 1.2. I want to focus the lens at 1.2 and pressing the shutter stop the lens down to 2.8/5.6. I liked this ability on my Nikon camera, it allowed me to use these lenses during important moments, because even if my focus was off slightly the lens stopping down would get what I need in focus. Drives me crazy that none of the manual focus lenses for Sony's system have this ability to my knowledge.

For this lens I would love to use it for portraits at ~f4 instead of wide open,

First Post! I thought I was gonna dip my toes into photography when I bought an A6300 and 10-18mm in November 2017, but I have found this forum and Phillip Reeves' blog since then and next thing you know I have an A7RII, Loxia 21, and a bad case of G.A.S. Thanks everyone.

So my question is: would this Voigtlander 110mm macro work in a 2-3 lens kit for landscapes while backpacking? One other lens would definitely be my Loxia 21, but I was also tossing around the idea of picking up a Zony 55mm and/or Sony 70-300 to round

Welcome!

Just an FYI - you're screwed now that you have GAS experience.

I think the 110 would be a worthy tele prime option in a 3 prime setup, and I think the 55 would complement the 21 and 110. However, you may find, like me, that you want something between the 21 and 55. (I have the Loxia 21 and CV 65, and just got the Samyang 35) There aren't many times for me where I need longer than 65 since I'm often in forests in the mountains, but in more open spaces, or above tree line, a longer lens is often desirable. I think the 110 or a 135 would be ideal if I wanted to carry the additional weight.

So yes, the 110 (or 85) would be a nice landscape lens - particularly for shooting abstracts at longer distances.

I use my CV 65 macro lens more often in a non-macro, landscape image, but it's fabulous for macro as well.

I don't carry my 24-105 typically. Sometimes I'll carry my 100-400 if I know wildlife worth photographing is likely in my hike, but typically it's too heavy for me and not worth the additional weight for a landscape shot or two.

One final point - you mention backpacking, which I'm assuming you mean backpacking where you're carrying everything for a few days in your pack? (plus camera gear) If so, you may want to explore a good, all purpose zoom to save weight. You're going to have enough weight in your pack with tent, sleeping bag, clothes, food, etc.

But seriously, I'm a huge fan of the discussions here - sample pictures and detailed descriptions make it a lot easier to identify which lens to get next and what to look out for. Also huge thanks to Fred on getting the site up and running.

Glad you find the blog site dangerous as well...

But what exactly do you mean by backpacking?

If you mean over a day, choose as you will.

But if you mean carrying days worth of food, shelter and warmth, then the 110 would be too heavy for my taste.
I’d pick very few lenses. I count every gram on long trips.
The L21 is a good choice, even if not super light.
For a tele I’d do ZM 85 or even a modded Zeiss G90 which is lighter still.

If I wanted macro and a focal length in between, the Sony 2.8/50 macro is super lightweight, and very sharp from macro to infinity. Also inexpensive.

For general use there are better optics than these; but surprisingly not massively better, and the weight to results ratio is hard to beat...

The Sony FE 85/1.8 weighs 371 grams. Another combination is the Sony A-mount 85/2.8 + LA-EA3 which weighs 340 grams in total. Of these two the Sony 85/1.8 is heavier by only 31 grams, but it's native and no adapter is required.

Samyang has introduced a 24/2.8 which weighs 93 grams. In addition Cosina has a 21/3.5 on their roadmap, and it will be smaller than the Loxia 21.

A possible combination of native FE lenses is Samyang 24/2.8 + Sony 50/2.8 + Sony 85/1.8
Weight 93 grams + 236 grams + 371 grams = 700 grams

I preordered it because of past experience with Voigtlander and how good the CV 65 is even though I returned it. The FL or MF did not fit in my lens collection.

My 90 macro is my most liked lens on 500px buy far, even though the CV 110 is pretty close I want to see how good it is. The main reason is using the APS-C crop mode on my A7RIII or hopefully a 30MP A6700 the reach is 165mm and I will find that quite useful. The spread between my 90 macro at 135 to 165 is big enough jump and should provide some specactular bokeh being 2.5 also.

Not as though the bokeh on the 90 macro is not wonderful close up already.

This site is really helpful to me when I think about gapping strategies and which lenses to carry. The 55/1.8 is an awesome, small, sharp lens but it's relatively close in FOV to the CV 110. In a 3 lens kit, that would leave a really large gap from the 21 to the 55. I would strongly recommend that you consider a 40mm prime, the CV 40/1.2. It is an incredibly good lens, beautiful rendering, small, built like a tank, and reasonably priced. It's a very popular lens on the Sony forum for a lot of reasons. It would gap

Thanks for the URL! I put in 21, 55, 110 and I see what you mean. I have swung by the CV 40/1.2 thread and I am in awe of the quality pictures that lens and it's users produce. I am thinking I should grab some tele lenses (short/macro, zoom) and an AF lens before adding to to my one and only native manual wide lens (the Loxia 21). I have a manual adapter for my parents' Nikon DX kit lenses (18-55, 70-200) and a nifty fifty (which luckily happens to be FX), but 0 AF lenses for my A7RII right now and that feels weird. I'd like to shoot some dinner parties and take a break from manual focusing once in a while (feel like a criminal saying that around here).

I like the idea of hiking with a tele lens because some weight resistance is always good, but I guess because I am building out my lens kit, I am overemphasizing the importance of picking up a short / macro tele or a zoom tele first. I actually ran into Viramati's images recently from a DPReview search about the 70-300 and that or an 85mm is what I would get over the macros 90/100/110mm f.2.8./2/2.5s if anything. I have enjoyed using my adapted tele zoom, but I am definitely a wide shot whore so I want to improve here. Although, I was never a macro guy, but there are some absolutely emotion evoking macros out there I have seem from the CV 65, Makro-Planar 100/2, Sony 90/2.8. I guess the decision is about macro vs. traditional/"proper" landscape photography.

By the way, how to you like having both the Laowa 15mm and the Loxia 21mm? As someone coming from the APSC 10-18mm and FE 16-35, I am definitely missing my ultra wide already, but I also think I leaned on it as a crutch to make an interesting shot. Also, I have been trying out astrophotography a couple of times, and the faster the better!

Between reasonable renting prices, buying and selling used, and such a wide variety of lens options and characteristics available, I think this is a great way to traverse the hobby materialistically as well as creatively. Or at least I hope...

You can tell me again about saving weight on camera gear! I recently went on my first trip the weight of the pack was a bit rough not gonna lie. But I found it to be such a wonderful wonderful time to be taking pictures that I might want to try to continue lugging some photo gear along with other stuff.

I like the idea of an all-purpose zoom for travel, but given that I might be liking astrophotography and my bread and butter are wide angle shots, it also makes sense to carry a dedicated, fast, UWA lens. But given that the weight of the 24-105 is less than the CV 110 and Sony 70-300, it is a great option if price wasn't a factor. It would really complement my Loxia 21, especially for when I travel or want to take pictures at events, where a manual macro or tele zoom wouldn't be as useful. I don't like the idea of paying full price for it though - not too many options in the used market yet. I feel like I would be ready for the CV 110 though, given how they are on a roll right now. Very interesting. but expensive option though.

Have you ever backpacked with your 100-400?

Yes, multiple days. That's the main reason I swapped from a Sony 16-35 f4 to Loxia 21. I want to carry one extra lens to change it up though. The 85mm length is a very interesting one, with the Sony f1.8 and Loxia 2.4 as great options. At ~600 grams though, I might be okay with another 170g for 1:1 macro capabilities if how I am seeing it. What do you think of that trade off?

The Sony 50/2.8 is a very interesting option! It seems to compromise both a fast AF ~50 and as a macro (50 seems short, but what do I know) though.

That's insane. That's LESS than a single CV 110...I just saw a Sony 50/2.8 and Sony 85/1.8 be bought off eBay for a combined price of $850 too...No sunstars in that combo though

Lugging photo gear is good - it's just a matter of prioritizing and minimizing the weight you're required to take.

I've never backpacked with the 100-400, although I have taken it on longer, six mile or so hikes. As I mentioned, I didn't take it out often, and never saw the wildlife I expected, but it is certainly nice for the occasional abstract. At this point, I'd likely not bother taking it on hikes or backpacking trips, which would mean I would be overcome with wildlife photo opportunities and abstracts requiring longer length lenses I didn't happen to bring.

You'd also asked someone else about the Laowa 15 and Loxia 21 - a combination I also have. The Loxia comes with me on every trip, the Laowa is specifically for astro trips or trips where I know I'll want the "distortion" of foreground items. It's a significant difference focal length wise. If UWA is your forte, then a good 15 would be worth adding to your Loxia 21, and the Laowa is a good UWA. You just have to step it down to about 2.8 for coma issues with astro.

I have high expectations for the new CV 110/2.5 APO just based on the CV 65/2 APO which is easily my best native lens. I know it will be well corrected and very high resolution but I hope they share the same color signature, micro-contrast and overall rendering.

Same here, I keep visiting this thread in the hope to see the first tests by Fred (As far as I remember, he may receive an early sample). Have you been told by your reseller that it will be in mi-August or you've simply used basic maths and made an average of 1 to 31 ? (I recall "in August")... Just curious.

I too keep looking for an update from Fred.

I may take the plunge now that I have my trip to Europe paid off and I've corralled a bunch of gear that's going on the B&S forum soon to offset the cost.

It better be 65/2 image quality at both far and portrait distances . . .

I'd be travelling the other way round to Moab, Canyonlands etc... later this year, and obviously I should get it by that time. I have absolutely no doubt that it will be at least on par to the 65mm or close (considering the reputation of the 125mm which is a relatively close focal lens + there has been some tremendous progress in the quality of the glass over these decades).

Actually I was hoping to get this lens before my upcoming trip in Aug end to pair it with my VE 40 1.2.
I informed the same to the seller and seems he is expecting it to ship out around Aug 13th, if everything goes by the timeline. So, would say we should most likely start getting our pre-orders round that time.

You got the 40 1.2 at a depreciated rate? The lens is still pretty much in demand.. how much did you pay for it? VE or VM?

This works 'most' of the time but it really depends on supply and demand. When a lens is superb, it takes a long, long time to depreciate. Unless you buy it used which is a different story.
