I tried to use Greentoe to buy my A9, but $4,000 was the best offer they gave me. I bought a new one here on the BS board for $3,500. I think Greentoe is great, but buying from people here who have a solid track record can be at least as good of a deal and sometimes even better.

What about Warranty? Does Sony warranty carry over beyond the initial buyer?

I actually bought it brand new with a receipt from an authorized retailer, so warranty was not an issue.

What is Greentree? I never heard of it, and a Google search turned up nothing.
Thanks

Last time I checked, I was left wondering if I could avoid a NY state company, as the taxes would probably cost more than the discount, and companies that charge restocking fees. At that time, it seemed Unique Photo in NJ was the main local participant and while they’re out of state, they then did have crazy restocking fees. Haven’t checked Greentoe since.

I'm in NY and my two offers came out of Illinois and Pennsylvania.

The A7R III I purchased came from Pennsylvania. Typically, you'll get offers from outside your home state from smaller dealers. However, since you live in NY (I live in NJ so I also have problems), you probably won't get too many offers from NY based companies since they have to charge NY state tax.

Yesterday (Saturday Feb 24) I made an offer for a Sony lens on Greentoe. They state your offer is a commitment to buy if they meet your price offer. I have heard nothing back yet (Sunday 2/25/18). Does anyone know how long one must wait before buying somewhere else? I realize I made an offer on a weekend, so things may be delayed.
Thanks

What happens if you don’t buy: don’t honor the commitment? Are you giving a credit card up front? Locked out?

@dgurtch, if you don't want to buy through Greentoe anymore, go back into your account, and change your offer to a really low amount. Nobody's going to accept it, and you can freely let the timer just run out. That lets you buy from somewhere else anytime you want.

@sbeme, the very first time you make an offer, I do not think you are obligated to give CC information. If your offer gets accepted though, you are given something like 12-24 hours to provide payment information. On any following purchases, your card gets charged as soon as someone accepts your offer.

You set the expiration date/time when you place the offer. All is made clear to you prior to you deciding to use them.

Thanks bwcolor, I thought I registered with GT on Saturday, and made an offer, but today ( Sunday) I could not log in there. So I set up my account again, made an offer, and on Sunday night within one hour, the bid was accepted. So far a good experience; will keep all informed as to how this all works out.

Yes, you know who the seller is but only after you complete the purchase. You get a complete receipt just as if you ordered it directly from that dealer. You do not know who the seller is when you receive a counter offer. Only after agreeing to the counter offer do you learn the seller identity. This has recently become a problem for me.

I have completed three purchases with greentoe:

First was an Irix 15mm lens that was mechanically defective. That one was arguably not the seller's or greentoe's fault. The lens was visibly new and the dealer took back the lens without issue. I continue to do business directly with that dealer.

Second was a Fuji camera that arrived with a broken anit-tamper seal on the internal packaging. The seller claimed "we did not even have it in stock and ordered it direct from Fuji for you". Fuji USA assured me that they would honor any warranty on the camera and it might have been opened for "extra QC" in Japan. I accepted that explanation and kept the camera which works fine. Only later on did I note in the fine print of the greentoe return policy that "Cameras with shutter counters over 200" cannot be returned. The camera I received showed "800" when I turned it on for the first time.

Third I ordered a Fuji lens which arrived with significant physical marks like scuffs on the barrel, scratches on the hood and debris on the glass internally and externally. I would have rated it 8+ on the used scale. If it was new then shame on Fuji. But I don't think Fuji sent it out that way. It came from the same seller as the previously mentioned camera. Now I see a pattern. My belief based on the last two experiences is that this one specific authorized Fuji dealer is actually selling their store returns and demo gear through greentoe. I noted my displeasure to both greentoe and the dealer and returned the lens.

I will never do business with that dealer directly in the future. But since I cannot know if I am agreeing to a purchase through that specific dealer I will not make another purchase through greentoe either.

The idea behind their service is great. But the anonymity of the sellers makes it impossible for me to avoid that one dealer. So one bad apple is spoiling the entire batch for me. If greentoe could provide a way to exclude specific sellers from my offers I would reconsider buying again. I doubt that will happen. The only way for me to avoid that one seller is to avoid greentoe entirely.

and what is that "bad" dealer name? You can share it out here. Also, send your complain/sample to Andrew so he can deal with that bad vendor. Don't keep it to yourself.

There is a good chance I agreed to some type of non-disclosure of the sellers' names in greentoe's terms of service. Until I can scrutinize the legalese to be sure I cannot publicly name them.

When you submit an offer, there is a text box that you can enter information that they would review. I would think that is a viable solution if you had an interest in using their services again. You could probably contact them directly to make sure that is the case.
