I'm not sure how one defines "killer sharp", but if the new Tamron 28-75 f2.8 is anything like the old one, it may just turn out to be just a slightly faster substitute for the Sony FE 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens...

Not a great comparison:

1. You can't compare DxoMark scores on bodies with different resolution because higher resolution bodies give higher score for the same lens.

2. The Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 is a 2003 lens. Doesn't make sense to compare it with lenses like Canon 24-70 mm f2.8L II which is a recent design. You should put it up against the original Canon 24-70mm f2.8L which is a 2002 lens so from the same time as Tamron.

I have included below a much more fair comparison against original 24-70mm f2.8L with both lenses on the same body (5Dsr):

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/793/40925778081_8f2126d0d1_b.jpg

And remember that the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 for DSLRs was (is) a $400 lens. It was certainly known to be weaker at f2.8 compared to the f2.8 zooms from Canon / Nikon but provided a great option to those who could not justify the extra size, weight and cost of the heavy duty f2.8 zooms and who were willing to get a slightly weaker but usable f2.8 option. Given how ridiculously large the f2.8 zooms are on small mirrorless bodies, I am sure many would still like the option of slightly weaker performance at lower size / cost.

My old Tamron 28-75 was actually pretty sharp wide open and was much better than a 24-70L I tried wide open, At f/4 they were close. Neither holds a candle to the 24-70L II.

Yes. I have one I'm using on a 5DIII and it is quite sharp. It replace a Sigma 24-105/4 as a smaller, lighter alternative and I've not seen a huge difference on images.

663g or 550g?

The 550g sounds almost too good to be true.

It's listed 550g on Tamron's official China website too, but no info for the filter size.

Teasers from Tamron suggesting $850. That'd be pretty tempting...

No official word other than Tamron Hong Kong saying 67mm on Facebook. All info points to 67mm as well. I'd put good money on it.

Agreed, it'll be interesting to see the effective focal length at close focus as well.

That info was already at B&H since 2 weeks ago. There is no new specs on this lens, except the guesstimated price at around ~$850. (Based on this Ad)

The she-boss has given me the approval for two lenses this year.
This is one I'm very interested in, it and the Voigtlander 21mm in e-mount.
Only thing that would mess up the 'plan' is if Sony issues the FE 200-600mm.

If the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 with stabilization for Canon/Nikon is listed for $1199, I wouldn't be surprised if the 28-75 for Sony will be listed below $1000...

______
My initial guess was $899, so that's pretty close to SAR's $850. Sub-$1000 because it has no VC, and as Fred mentions, not a big issue because of full frame cameras IBIS (for newer models)
