Yeap, no pre-order date yet!

On the B&H Photo page, it has incomplete specifications but it mentions weight will be 550 grams. That's pretty light for a normal f/2.8 zoom lens!

I wonder wha't the filter thread. Anyone knows?

My old Canon 28-70mmL is around 870gms. So, what gets sacrificed when making a lens this light.

I did some quick measurements/calculations from the available photos of the lens. Based on the diameter of the barrel closest to the camera, compared to the size of the front ring, it looks like the filter size will be 67mm. But it's hard to be precise and it could be 72mm.

My old Canon version 28-75 had a very light plastic body...did not feel like it could withstand a tumble, but then mine never tumbled so I don't know?

The current 24-70/2.8L II is listed as 805g at B&H, and is known to have been a lighter build while presenting a new standard in performance.

So, with a few more years of research, a tighter focal length range, and omitted VC, Tamron might well have been able to provide excellent performance with a lighter weight. My only further consideration is that they keep it G2-grade rugged and weather resistant!

That's actually great news as this lens could be used with Lee's Seven5 filter system.
Something that's not possible with the 24-105G or 24-70GM.

It is 72mm according to recent Tamron confirmation (SAR) "Our reader Micah got this from a Tamron manager: The lens will have a 72mm filter size."

Really have great hopes for this lens, I do hope it lives up to them ;o) ie a C/Y 35-70 replacement!

Is this lens really specifically developed for Sony, as Tamron claims, or similar trick that Sigma applied just recently, I'm wondering.

If you look the length of that lens compared to old Canon version of 28-75mm F2.8, the Sony version is just about 1" longer...Canon version is 3.62", and Sony 4.6" (as advertised so far).

Hummm, It could still work with the Seven5 but at 72mm, it will probably vignette at 28mm.

I’m looking at this lens primarily for events and street where I never use filters so really don’t care about filter size. I’m more interested how it will AF on my A7R2, especially eye AF.

Based on interviews posted on SARs the lens was built from the ground up to work with Sony and is optimized to the placement of Sony sensors versus Sigma where it appears that it was just extended to work with Sony and not completely redesigned or designed from scratch.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this Tamron performs and actually decided to hold off on purchasing a 24-70 GM as a result.

That’s a great idea for sure as it’s a pretty much a dead on competitor to the GM. I’m very interested myself as it could replace my 24-105 and I’m fine starting at 28mm. I’ll have a Loxia 25 at some point here, just waiting for in stock status

If it's not too expensive, and performs well this might be my next FE lens. :-)
