Stuff happens but it how you handle it that makes the difference. You and your team were all over this once discovered and went out of their way to make it right. So go ahead and brag, you've got a great and dedicated team that only wants to satisfy the customer!
Yes, that FMer was me . . . but I'll get another shot at this lens soon! Thanks Roger!

It’s worth the effort. I’m a prime guy, and I really like this lens. I think I’ll be using it more often then I had planned to when I bought it.

Yeah, I sold my 24-70GM to buy this lens. On the zoom, I rarely need f/2.8 (primes) and it makes a great two lens travel kit with the FE12-24/4.
I'll find one . . . rumor is that Sony might have an update this week.

Just registered to comment in this thread.
I decided today that I would try to find a local copy and buy this lens. I went to 2 stores and tried 3 copies, all had the focus problem.
As others have said, it was very obvious. Took a picture of the wall of lens boxes in AF-S at F4, stopped down to F8, and couldn't read any of the labels anymore. Was really sad as I had my heart set on purchasing.

Did the store staff(s) have anything to say about the situation? Did they seem familiar with it?
I was disappointed that they did not (both locations in San Francisco). For clarity, all were 181 serial numbers, though I did not get a picture of the remaining numbers.
At the first shop, the person helping me was thankful for bringing the situation to their attention so that they could possibly send it back. I got the feeling that the person at the second shop didn't care at all and just wanted to offload it on the next person that wouldn't be so scrutinizing. It almost made me glad that it wasn't good so that I wouldn't have to give him business.

At least in my area, most shops are selling the lens within a day of receiving them. These were the first I was actually able to lay hands on (after 4 calls to other shops spread throughout the last week or two).
Other people are definitely buying this lens with no idea that this issue is present in an alarmingly high number of them. Really wish I could confidently get a hold of a good one.

One could assume they did on the initial 180xxxx batch... ; - )
I’d be more concerned if lens testing weeded out bad ones in the 180xxxx batch. That would mean a few things:
1) They were aware of the defect
2) They didn’t fix it
3) They decided to stop looking for it and just shipped lenses they knew might be defective
This whole experience makes it clear that any testing they do perform in the factory is limited in its efficacy or that its simply not done...
