My first 24-105 tested bad when I tried it out. I took several shot art 24mm and several at 105mm. The ones at 105 were noticeable less sharp to the point of being useless. That lens had a S/N 181xxxx. I found this review subsequently and used your test procedure for the second lens. The new lens tested ok using the approach you cite in your comment. The new lens is also a S/N 1814221 and tests OK. Unfortunately, not having read this Forum, I did not record the full S/N for the first lens. But when I returned it I note that the second lens had the same 3 first numbers as the returned lens (181) and I was concerned the defect would be found throughout the production run with S/Ns of 181xxx..
Thanks for your very helpful comments concerning this Sony lens.

I'd like to remind everyone that this is a truly excellent lens. Hopefully this production glitch will fade into distant memory while we are all making images with it.
Here's a super bowl image, stitched from three horizontal shots.

It was a balmy 6° F (-14° C) when I shot that. (USB battery pack inside my jacket, with cord running to camera, to keep things going.)
It will almost be summer like on Wednesday when we hit the 40s . . . Then plunge back to cold!!!

I agree the lens exceeded my expectations. It is an ideal landscape and travel lens. Here is a couple I took with the 24-105 G on my recent quick trip to Scottsdale and Sedona Arizona (cross post from FE Image thread).

Thank you Mike for your work on this - it was fabulous service for everyone in the community - and a wake up for Sony to get their QC act together - knowing that the community will work together to advertise and document their problems if they don't.
Fortunately my 24-105 was one of the good ones but Ive always felt that buying Sony gear was too much of a crap shoot at times. Given that otherwise I love their equipment I am hoping Sony becomes a much more reliable manufacturer - and an easier company to deal with when you have issues.

I think there is credit to give to a bunch of people on this probably, but Mike (for organizing this thread) and snapsy (for being the first to identify it) certainly deserve a lot!
The problem is bad enough that it wasn't going to not be noticed, but the conversation that began in the other thread about what the problem might be was excellent.
Unfortunately, unless Roger is able to get an inside peek, I suspect we'll never know what the problem stems from.

I tried plugging in my known bad serial number into Sony's database for checking affected lenses and it comes back as not affected. It's interesting because this is such a specific issue that I would assume the database is derived from known bad parts or production step. Hopefully people don't experience the dreaded "within spec" reponse if they send in an affected lens that is not in the database.
"Your SEL24105G lens, Serial Number: 1814215 is not on the list of affected lenses."

I sure hope we'll get at least some clue about what causes this odd behavior in only some of them.
All I did was collate a list; nothing to it. The thanks should go to the 80+ members who shared their serial numbers so we could see hard data about the scope of the problem. As usual, the FM gang comes through!
