I guess the Mark III can focus in the dark... or else ƒ 5.6 to 7 has great depth of field...

A lot of people love those basses - but the vast majority of bass players didn't. You have to understand about bass players... while all drummers are crazy... all bass players aren't the brightest bulbs on the lot. The Recording Les Paul Bass only lasted about 4 or 5 years in a very limited run and really never took off in popularity due to the number of switches and settings. It was decided it was just too complicated for most bass players and they discontinued production. There is also a six string Les Paul with tha same features - I always wanted one just to make the set - but couldn't afford it when they were affordable. Now you can't find them anywhere.

I bought this one from our guitar players brother in 1974. Cheap! Its a 1971. It has high and low impedance pickups that can be set in phase or out for different sounds. It also has a three position switch that just adds balls to the bottom in three steps. As most Les Pauls - it has the usual three position switch for front rear or both pickups. Its a short scale bass and I've got it strung with Rotosounds that haven't been changed since... oh about 1981. It is a wonderful bass and while the Fender P and the Curbo fretless are nice... I'll not let this one go easily... but then i have that bulb thing going.

oh yeah - it weighs a ton! Try standing up with that hanging around your neck for a 4 hour gig and you know you've done something! Multiply that by the number of nights and you understand quickly why i walk funny... its not just cause I don't have any talcum powder.

Why real men shoot Canon.....

The Smiths were unable to conceive children and decided to use a surrogate father to start their family. On the day the proxy father was to arrive, Mr. Smith kissed his wife goodbye and said, 'Well, I'm off now. The man should be here soon.'

Half an hour later, just by chance, a door-to-door baby photographer happened to ring the doorbell, hoping to make a sale. 'Good morning, Ma'am', he said, 'I've come to...'

'Oh, no need to explain,' Mrs. Smith cut in, embarrassed, 'I've been expecting you.'

'Have you really?' said the photographer. 'Well, that's good. Did you know babies are my specialty?'

'Well that's what my husband and I had hoped. Please come in and have a seat'.

After a moment she asked, blushing, 'Well, where do we start?'

'Leave everything to me. I usually try two in the bathtub, one on the couch, and perhaps a couple on the bed. And sometimes the living room floor is fun. You can really spread out there.'

'Bathtub, living room floor? No wonder it didn't work out for Harry and me!'

'Well, Ma'am, none of us can guarantee a good one every time. But if we try several different positions and I shoot from six or seven angles, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results.'

'My, that's a lot!', gasped Mrs. Smith.

'Ma'am, in my line of work a man has to take his time. I'd love to be In and out in five minutes, but I'm sure you'd be disappointed with that.'

'Don't I know it,' said Mrs. Smith quietly.

The photographer opened his briefcase and pulled out a portfolio of his baby pictures. 'This was done on the top of a bus,' he said.

'Oh, my God!' Mrs. Smith exclaimed, grasping at her throat.

'And these twins turned out exceptionally well - when you consider their mother was so difficult to work with.'

'She was difficult?' asked Mrs. Smith.

'Yes, I'm afraid so. I finally had to take her to the park to get the job done right. People were crowding around four and five deep to get a good look'

'Four and five deep?' said Mrs. Smith, her eyes wide with amazement.

'Yes', the photographer replied. 'And for more than three hours, too. The mother was constantly squealing and yelling - I could hardly concentrate, and when darkness approached I had to rush my shots. Finally, when the squirrels began nibbling on my equipment, I just had to pack it all in.'

Mrs. Smith leaned forward. 'Do you mean they actually chewed on your, uh... equipment?'

'It's true, Ma'am, yes.. Well, if you're ready, I'll set-up my tripod and we can get to work right away.'

'Tripod?' 'Oh yes, Ma'am. I need to use a tripod to rest my Canon on. It's much too big to be held in the hand very long.'

Mrs. Smith fainted

Anyone know whats up with the buy/sell forum? Used to be able to look at what is for sale at no charge - now I'm getting a screen that blocks access and requires joining - as if i'm expected to sell something.

Anyone up this time of night? I'm looking at an auction that's ending soon with some AlienBees - and I'm trying to figure out the best way to fire them. PocketWizards? Yeah that'd work, but I am a cheap man. I have a set of the "eBay" triggers - Cactus V2s. They have the little 1/8th inch holes in them - would that work until I could afford PWs?

If you're up and have insight, I'd love to hear it. This auction ends at 7:30 AM.

JonU - hilarious dude.

Sorry Colin - went to bed early last night around 2:30 and missed your msg. sync cord, PW's or ebay triggers should all fire them though - if it was a good deal, i wouldn't let the firing mechanism hold me back.

Sorta thinking of lightning pictures down near or at the GT parking deck - or maybe Galleria parking deck. Anyone game?
You need a tripod, poncho or rain gear and a wide angle lens and it would help to have a remote/wired shutter release. I had my best luck shooting out the back window of the truck last time. Could probably put two or three cameras on tripods in there and have room for three people.

JonB - it's all good. Thanks for the input - I passed on the auction as the stands weren't what I wanted, and it wasn't that much of a discount when all was said and done.

I'm passing on the lightning pictures. Heading over to a bar in Decatur to try out some belgian beer. Take care, don't get struck

JonU - you've owned Alienbees + softbox + grid - what are your thoughts on the setup? Did you like the stands or not? I'm thinking of getting a boom so I can do straight overhead stuff.

I loved the 24 f/1.4 so much yesterday I'm considering selling the 24-70 to get a 24 f/1.4 and an 85 f/1.8. I already have 50 f/1.8, so I'd actually gain some range and have some stops in between, but f/1.4 is amazing. The backgrounds are like butter - so smooth. And when I say "considering" - I mean I'm starting to look for someone who wants a good 24-70 - but I don't think I have the box (mom got to it back when I was living at home).

Lightning never re-materialized so i didn't get back out.

Yikes - looks like another one lost to primal fever!

I don't know - but i think you'ld do well to have both the 24 AND the 24-70... and then pick up an 85 later. Take your time - you can acquire what you need as you go - there really isn't any hurry. Do a few paying gigs and let the customers pay for your gear. Learn how to market every opportunity and before you know it, you'll be swimming in money. Trading stuff off at a loss or even breaking even isn't a good way to make money.

thats my 2 cents worth - which is all its worth - my opinions are mine alone... i do not even try to share anyone else's...

I'm not wanting to do dumb stuff to get down to Primes, but the backgrounds are just so creamy.

I won't make any rash moves - and I love letting the people pay for my gear. It's just that - f/2.8 was NOT fast enough in the theatre Tracey and I shot in Saturday. No way you get a decent shot at f/2.8 - and all flashes looked like direct flash because of the dark, massive open backgrounds.

If everyone gives me $0.02, I'll make maybe $0.25 - that's assuming someone gives me just one cent worth.

Cool, i don't blame you - ƒ2 and bellow is dreamland for sure. My 300 delivers butter wide open and if it weren't so darn big... i'd take it everywhere.

Shot with the 300 yesterday on my deck... in the rain. These would probably be sharper had i used the tripod. These are mostly shot with settings like 1/250th at between ƒ 2.8 and 4. The 300 is like a 390mm on the Mark III 1.3 crop.

Just sayin' don't be anxious about getting rid of the 24-70, it has too many uses to let it go once you have it. Youth never waits - but try - wait until you can have both. That's my suggestion. I know I'm not beating anyone to the door to rush out and buy up a bunch of primes - and i appreciate their capabilities as much as anyone. That is all I have in my Nikon F3 kit. I love what they can do and I miss the tack sharp full frame ultrawides i have... in a bag... somewhere in a closet... that i never use.

Colin - Ever since I got the 35L the 50L and the 135L the 24-70 never made another apperance on the camera. You think your zooms are sharp until you do some extensive work with primes. Then you see how really bad they are. They rock when you are in a position to use them stopped down a bit....no issues. But if you want to play with low light or DOF then you are hosed. I find with the primes I take more time setting up my shots. I tend to walk around more looking for that great angle. With the zoom it was aim...zoom ...shoot. Now that could have been just me....

I have sold my 24-70 and don't miss it at all....I had to trade the 35L to get the body that I wanted...and I can tell you right now..it was a good trade. The MKIII is sharp...sharp...sharp. I was getting tired of soft shots with the 40D. They say the AA filter is too stronge on it or something...I don't know. But I can tell the MKIII is better from the get go.

I will soon own another wide prime. Might try the 24 first this time...and I will own the king of all primes...the 85 1.2....I dream about that lens at night....

As far as the Alien Bees...I loved them...when I would drag them out and use them. For me I prefer a couple flashes. It is much easier and you get very good results.

If I had a place to set the Bees up for good..then I would have liked them better.
