I really like the ThinkTank Mirrorless Mover series for something small and lightweight. I have the 10, 20, and 25i.
Body: a7R2
MM10: a7R2 with FE 28 2.0 (no longer have the lens)
MM20: a7R2 with either the 16-35GM, 50 1.4, or 90 2.8 macro.
MM25i: a7R2 with any of the three above, plus RX100V. If I had a smaller lens, like the 28mm or 35mm 2.8, it could fit where the RX100 sits.
For carrying around more of the large lenses at the same time I have a Peak Design 13L messenger. That'll fit the body with one lens attached and two more lenses.
What is the longest lens, mounted on an A7xxx body, that you can get in the MM10? Is it the 28mm? Will the 16-35 or the 50 1.4 squeeze in? Or do have to go to the MM20 for those lenses?

But suppose you're not working and you just want to take your camera with just a medium lens on it?
i too have a closet full of bags / backpacks - but every time i've tried to find that "small" one, it looks like I am wearing a purse!
my one and only bag now is the Ona Prince Street (dark truffle leather), smallest bag i've had and fits an a7r2, batis 18+25+135 and Zony 50/1.4 -- but is also small enough to that i don't mind carrying a camera + lens or two -- and it definitely doesn't look like a camera bag, so carrying it around all day / to the office, doesn't seem like i'm a tourist.

I misspoke on the MM20 and 16-35GM with hood in shooting position. It does fit, and it's only snug. No dividers can be used, but you'd not be dividing it from anything, anyway.
In the MM25i, the same combo fits and with one of the thin dividers you'd have a second compartment for something like the 28mm f/2 or 55mm f/1.8.
Thanks for the update! Sounds like it would be perfect for just carrying that combo.

Thank you. I completely get what you are saying here--it is not just the size of the bag but what it feels like to have it with you, whether it feels like it gets in the way or is nice to have. I had looked at the Prince Street once before when I was looking for a larger bag and decided it was too small. But it may be an interesting choice here for my present purpose. I am going to take a look at it. I might even be able to get some papers in when I don't need to carry too much to work.
Someone else here recommended the Ona Bowery in leather--had used it widely for traveling with two small cameras (he said Leicas--can you refer to Leicas as just a "small camera"?). I am looking at that too. That color is beautiful--I ordered the Bowery in that color and material to look at.

When I had the 28, it mounted on an a7R2 fit very nicely in the MM10. That'd be the perfect little stealth kit.
16-35 (any variant) or 50 1.4 on a7R2; no way they're going in the MM10. Nope. Not even close.

I have an Ona Bowery as a small camera bag to carry 2-3 lenses with my A7rII. Nice size, quality construction. I have the canvas fabric. I really doubt you'd have any problems with the single latch. It seems more secure than something like Billingham's latches, and only 2nd to a full zipper. I've never worried.
Another option is to use a padded camera bag that goes inside of another bag. I have a Crumpler Haven for this purpose and it fits about the same amount of gear as the Ona Bowery. For just a single camera/lens combo, maybe an Osprey UltraLight Camera Case, Lowepro Dashpoint, or Mirrorless Mover would suffice.

the Bowry was one of the bags that looked like a purse on me.
ymmv.

there are some older Billingham bags with a plastic zipper for the main storage.
its does not look like a fotobag, its full padded and water proof.
this my favourite "go anywhere bag".

My biggest issue with Ona bags is the dang dividers . Just to thick and really eats up space. Why I like the Peak Design bags. I’m not a fan of Pelican type protect in a shoulder bag or sling.

The largest combo I’ve been able to fit in the MM10 is the A7r2 + Zony 55/1.8. It’s a very tight squeeze.

Well, the Peak Design Sling 5L arrived, but it is inside of an elaborate black paper sealed bag with a tear strip, so I can't take a look at it without destroying the packaging. and that would make it difficult to return to Amazon. So, back it goes, unseen and out of the competition.

Check with the Seller. It's unreasonable for them to expect you not to be able to open it if they simultaneously offer returns.

I've been backpacking since 1976 so it feel very natural for me to wear a pack. Plus living in Boulder county with a large college population, daypacks are really common.
I am a big fan of the MIndshift Rotation series and have the 22L and 30L that I use for hiking and will be trying the 16L for an everyday carry. I have tried and returned lots of sling and shoulder bags .. just not my preference.
