I like it and it is pretty much attached to my M5 film camera, as that body's bigger size matches up well to the lens. The price is almost triple that of the 7Artisans, and if I was going to get one now I wouldn't. I much prefer the 7Artisans as its images are less sterile. Irrespective

Thanks for the info. I suppose that just about settles it. From what you describe, I definitely am not interested in the VM. I have plenty of more effective and modern ways to get a more sterile look as it is. Personally, character is key when looking at lenses in this particular niche.

I have found the images this lens produces are beautiful and unique. It's a bokeh monster!

However, the TAP really needs an update. It's basically unusable on the A7RIII in AF-C mode and even in AF-S, I can't get it to stop pumping in vertical (portrait) orientation for some reason. It only seems to work in horizontal (landscape) orientation for me.

Nice!! Glad you are enjoying the images out of it.

It's interesting that you are having trouble with it on the R3. On the A9, it has behaved similarly in both orientations from my usage albeit only achieving focus in the central region of the frame with eye-AF seeming to work a bit further out.

The times where I experience the pumping/pulsating/hunting have generally been rectified with slight focal distance adjustment on the lens itself. However, when too far away from center, the pumping just doesn't stop and it is never able to achieve focus. BTW, are you experiencing the pumping consistently in vertical orientation at all distances or has it been in a specific scenario?

I think my issue in vertical orientation was due to the fact I was trying to obtain focus more off Center than in horizontal. I was shooting full body portraits of my GF which put her face/head near the limits of the top Phase Detect area. That explains it. The nearly square Phase Detect area means there’s probably limited situations where it makes sense trying to shoot vertically with this lens as your usable area of focus is the same either way.

Ahh. Makes sense. Have you tried actuating the eye-AF with it yet to see if you can get any further away from center?

I bought this lens awhile back and ended up selling it. I decided to rebuy it again after looking at the shots I took with it and realized it's pretty darn special! This time I bought it black, because even though I think silver looks neat, black never goes out of fashion!

Here are a couple shots I took with my original copy on an A7 II + TAP:

@Jonathan F, really nice use of this rendering in a portrait. Makes me want to try it.

Because everyone needs a photo of pink lettuce , here at the grocery.

I have a question: I own the Mitakon Speedmaster II 35mm f/0.95 that I use on my A6500. I absolutely love it. Obviously not a landscape lens but certainly has its uses indoors and for low light close-ups. I'm wondering if any of you have tried the 7Artisans 50mm f/1.1 on the A6500? I'm sure it won't be as good as on the A7, but still... It would be almost strictly for portraits, low light stuff.

Thanks in advance,

Jean

@Johnathan F - Awesome shots! Happy to hear you got another copy and looking forward to seeing more work! Rig looks great in black btw.

@Elizabeth77 - Awesome rendering and you are indeed correct about needing that shot.

@johnnydrz - I haven't tried it on a crop body yet as I do not own one. But I would imagine it would be pretty stellar since the lens performs pretty amazingly until you get to the extreme edges. I'd imagine that as a 75mm f/1.1, it would be very nice. Also, from my testing and shooting, going to 1.1 actually gives you more light gathering with this lens.

Few more samples from this weekend.

I wouldn't buy the 7Artisans 50mm if ultimate sharpness is your goal. This lens is more about achieving that unique OOF look. I'd look at getting an MF Voigtlander, Zeiss or any of the native 50mm lenses if you want sharpness.

I took a couple shots stopped down. When used around f/1.4-2.0 the lens starts behaving like a standard 50mm. I think this lens has better uniform sharpness than my Voigtlander 40mm 1.4 Nokton, which is very sharp in the center, but gets softer towards the corners. When used in this regards it feels more like a modern lens.

@Bubble - Depends on how you plan on shooting it. Wide open, it is as you would expect. At about 1.3-1.4ish, it sharpens up plenty and looks pretty similar to most 50s that open up to that. The other half of the equation is post processing and your sharpening methods.

@Johnathan F - Good stuff, dude. Keep it coming.

I’m having real trouble with getting this lens to focus in AF-C mode on my A7RIII in low light on the TAP... it hunts a lot and never locks focus and may sporadically detect an eye but only for a moment then lost and face detection is no good at f/1.1

AF-S seems more reliable as it’s less likely to hunt. But it could be my shooting conditions... low light lounge shots of my better half. I’ll have to try it in better light and see how it does. But if anyone has some rips I’d appreciate it.

Unfortunately that's how TAP behaves with all my lenses on the A7RIII. I'm hoping for a firmware update.

I'm surprised by the LoCA correction level. Did you fix axial aberration in post?
This is an intriguing lens!
