not sure HOW he can get the image sharp at f/1.1

I tried 2 different copies and they both look very soft wide open which is normal for this lens.

yeah this lens is not sharp at 1.1. but its good enough for most things. even the cheap 1.8 is sharper than this thing wide open. but its 1.8 and doesn't have the character this lens has.

another pic from this lens.

I've posted this before, but might as well post it again. This was shot at 1.1 on a Leica M240. Full image then tight crop:

I would guess that there are probably significant sample variations. The ones I own is very reasonably sharp even at 1.1. I also just bought recently, I wonder if 7artisans has made improvements in manufacturing practices.

I have two - silver and black - both bought used at different times from different people. And both are sharp like that.
Perhaps a focus issue is to blame? Or I got lucky.

You just got lucky. I use focus peaking on the m10 and even with tap adapter on Sony A9, both are soft.

p.s I don't use focus peaking, just the magnification. Focus peaking does not seem accurate with Leicas (at least to me)

same man. Magnification AND focus peaking. Think about it, reading through 17 pages, you will see majority member buy this lens for "character", which is the soft creamy look. I don't know if your lens got some "cph" boots but most of us just get the normal version. lol

I guess mine are defective. I need to send them back. More character needed.

It is always somewhat dangerous to judge the worth of a lens by looking at someone else's result. Other than sample variations, the ability and willingness to post process, agreement on what "tack sharp" is are always somewhat different.

Some are willing to setup individual profiles for each lens and shoot in raw to get the best of a lens while others takes out of camera jpg and hold it as gospel. From my experience, 7Artistian is a reasonable natural lens with some flaws that require working with wide open but needs a lot work to bring out its best. It general has a lot of halation and purple fringing wide open and benefit from strong post processing in contrast, black, clarity departments. Fortunately, the underlying resolution in the file in the center of the lens is reasonably high which means a heavy hand approach to post processing doesn't mean you loss too much. Like other experts suggested, if you are less willing to do all the corrections in post, shooting between 1.1 and 1.4 gives the most reasonable result out of the camera. I also find Post processing using a film profile brings out the best of the lens due to its low contract.

Below are some 50 pictures I shot with the lens. Maybe I have a good copy, maybe I am willing to do more post processing than others, or maybe I just don't have that high requirements to my lens others do. Is this sharp like my 55 1.8? No, it is good enough to work with? Certainly.

I just picked this up and can’t believe how much fun it is. Won’t compete with the 55/1.8, but it has such a different look! Thanks for this great thread.

Been away from this thread for a bit since I've been knee deep in other glass I've picked up since. lol.

Anyhow, played with it again a little bit this week and still enjoy the hell out of it.

What distance do I put the lens to do the calibration?

Bought the silver. Is the black one painted and will wear better?

Hi JohnDizzo15, Thanks for starting this thread, i read it all and that made me decided on a 7 artisans for my TAP. I started off with the mitakon 50mm 0.95 and love that lens and have developed a love for manual focus lenses that will give me a medium format look. I've recently modded my techart pro to take in a canon mount adaptor and have a lomography Petzval 58mm f1.9 Bokeh control for autofocus! Anyone who is looking for another awesome" character" lens in their arsenal should really look into this lens! it was really exciting and yielded some really amazing images. Love that lens so much that i even bought a nikon mount version for my nikon cameras. but it's not being used now as i sold my nikon cameras. will sell it for a bargain to anyone interested here.

Will come back here and update with some images i took with all the different lenses once I have my 7 artisans! Just too good of a bargain to pass off as I'm getting one for $190 used.

Tested the 7artisans 50mm 1.1 with my Tech art pro! Can't believe how much i paid for this lens. it's really got a bit of a dreamy feel in this lens. My copy tends to have a soft warm red flare/light leak that makes it very special for portraits. Eye AF on the sony a7 iii is pretty phenomenal! I can somehow forsee myself selling off my mitakon 50mm 0.95 if it wasn't for the wierd lens flare which i occasionally love in my concert photography photos. now to see if there is really much of a difference between those two lenses.
