p.32 #1 · New FE 24-105 f/4. How good?

So is anyone planning on using the new FE 24-105mm f/4 G along side the FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM?

About a month back I found a trade and gave up my FE 24-70 f/4 for a lightly used FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM. I had purchased that lens when it first came out but decided it was too heavy for the A7RII I was using at the time and I also wasn't using my Sony bodies for any event work.

These days, with the A9 and A7RIII I own, and use both with grips, I found the f/2.8 GM better balanced and certainly the better event lens so I made the trade up.

That said I am wondering if its worth also getting the 24-105mm f/4 G for walking around type use. Had this same dilemma back when I shot Canon and I did own both their 24-105 and their 24-70 at the same time for quite awhile. To me the two lenses have really different intended usages so I while they directly compete on focal length the two do not compete much on usage.

Now I do have smaller Batis 25/2, Sony Zeiss 55/1.8 and Batis 85/1.8 that work in this focal range I often would like to have one lens to take for walking around and this 24-105 appears it may be this G lens. Am a crazy for considering this?

I have Nikon using 24-105 A and 24-70f2.8G, and Sony A mount using 24-70f2.8ZA and older 24-105. It is very tempting to have this 24-105F4 for FE mount...however, given similar price as the 24-70f2.8GM...I prefer the later.

Isn’t there a $900 difference? Here in the US there is.

You'll always have to consider the extra stop you get with the 24-70 but I think we may discover that the 24-105 overall IQ isn't too far off from the GM which is probably the other main reason many people choose 24-70 lenses over 24-105 and 24-120 lenses.

Steve -- That sounds like a good plan. As a bonus, from the results being posted, you may find the 24-105 a good event lens since it has outstanding IQ wide open to 5.6, with little improvement at smaller apertures. I always used a Canon 24-70/2.8L or 24-105/4L between f/4-5.6 for posed people and small groups. So it might be a pleasant surprise for you when you don't need f/2.8.

It’s why I bought the lens very good wide open for event work. F4 is tough if it’s not good to F8 but I can get enough DOF at 5.6 which this lens will excellence at with portable flash. The real big problem is these small group type shot with 3 to 5 people in them milling around talking. I do a ton of these grip and grin crap so I need 5.6 and good at it. This lens will kill it tgere

I've received another copy of 24-105 F4. It is much better than the first one, but there is something wrong with it. I've tested all focal lenghts on F4 and F8. On every single shot on all focal lenghts there is always the same situation:

Center is much sharper on F4 than on F8, corners are sharper on F8.

My procedure test looks like this:
a) tripod
b) 2s self timer
c) achieve best focus on f4, then switch aperture to f8 without using focus

Now there is one other thing: When I'm on F8 I can achieve better center sharpnes when I slightly pull focus ring but then my corners looks much softer than on F4 :/

Should I try 3rd copy of this lens or is this normal ?

Just got mine yesterday and I have the same problem...

Manual focus at f/4, then stop down to f/5.6 and f/8

Worse in center (where I focused) at f/5.6 and even worse at f/8

True at close, mid and long distance subjects. And at all the focal lengths (approx 24, 35, 50, and 105mm) I tested.

Did a quick test once at 3m or so with AF-s (spot, focused on center) and get a similar result using AF at 105mm... less sharp at f/8 than f/4...

@darrellc

So there are two of us with the same problem. I've tweaked one of the photos (70 mm) in Lr and it doesn't look so bad anymore:

But I know it could be a lot better and I wonder should I try another copy or this is normal behaviour for this lens.

I’m going to try some more testing later today based on comments earlier in this thread and over at dpreview...

Will try in AF-C to see if it focuses stopped down and if that takes care of the issue...

Will try toggling preview feature on/off to see if that makes a difference

If I could focus manually at my selected aperture, or if I could set AF-S to focus at working aperture, I wouldn’t worry much about this - just a hassle in the lens design that can be worked around. But a quick glance at my aperture with this lens suggests it meters stopped down at working aperture, but then goes back to wide open to acquire focus (in AF-S, haven’t check to see what AF-C behavior is) before stopping back down for the exposure. I’m not aware of a setting to change this AF behavior in the menus.

I am testing on an A7RIII with latest firmware, I don’t have another sony body at the moment to test. Not sure if these results are specific to camera body/firmware combo, so perhaps everyone can share what they are testing on to try to isolate.

This does look like the copy-variation focus shift issue that I and two others here at FM have on our copies. If confirmed this would add two more FM samples to the pile, bringing the total to 5.

The easiest way to see if it's focus shift is by focusing with AF-S @ f/4 (or manually focusing), then in MF mode switch to f/8 and take the same photo.

As You can see my second copy of this lens is almost the same at 24 and 105 @F4 and F8. The biggest difference is on 35, 50 and 70 - 80. My first copy was tragic on all of the focal lengts, so this is better :P

So it seems I will return it and wait for the 3rd copy. Maybe this time it will be better.

@darrellc

I've tested mine lens on A7r2.

My procedure test looks like this:
a) tripod
b) 2s self timer
c) achieve best focus on f4, then switch aperture to f8 without using focus

Now there is one other thing:

Mine does not behave like your copy. What is true is that at the shorter FL and f5.6 max. performance will be reached, whereas at 105 mm it is at f8. But still, the corners are never sharper than the center, Stephan

This is a good description of my copy as well.

Thanks for reply. Mine on F4 - F 5.6 looks good. Beyond that is crap in the center. Can You show some example on 50 mm F4 and F8 ?

Tested AF-S (spot focused on center) vs AF-C at 10m at 50 and 105mm at f4,5.6,8.

AF-S: sharp at f4, degrades progressively stopped down

AF-C: sharp at all apertures, image quality jumps from f4 to f5.6 at 105mm

Didn’t bother to check edges, corners

Sure, I uploaded full-size images for you here:

Hope this helps, though only 24 MP..sharpening in LR only 25 (standard) from RAW to JPEG without further sharpening.

Possibly the effects of focus shift. AF-S is more likely to focus wide open.
AF-C is more likely to focus stopped down, thus eliminating focus shift.

But it's not as simple as saying "just used AF-C" because, as @JimKasson has shown, AF-C is rather more variable.

I guess the policy might be, where possible use AF-S wide open, and on lenses prone to focus shift, use AF-C stopped down.
