For some reason, I seem to consistently get more of these issues at a shutter speed of 1/60 than any other shutter speed combination. The focal length doesn't matter too much, but it's easier to see the longer the lens is zoomed in of course. Wondering if I should file a warranty claim/issue with my retailer, as the lens seems unreliable, and I'm tired of having to fire off 2-3 shots for each image I want to make, and study them and select the

I have a feeling that Sony has to address this and hopefully a FW update will be the fix. Unlike some companies, Sony doesn't seem to acknowledge problems when asked about them, which is frustrating, but they, though slowly, will do the FW updates. I hope it is sooner than later as they do have an obligation to get this fixed.

p.31 #2 · New FE 24-105 f/4. How good?

Hi All,

I just signed up for this question, but have been following this forum for a very long time.
Thanks a lot to all you for helping me in my buying decisions and providing such great content

I received my copy of the 24-105 f4 today. Although I did not have time to test it out in the field, I noticed that the lens makes a weird sound when zooming from 105mm to 50mm. When I turn the zoom ring (very) fast from 105mm to 50mm, around the 70mm mark, the lens makes a sound as if some parts were pushing against each other - so as if two (plastic) parts "scraped" against each other. Curiously that does not happen when zooming in the other direction, so from 50mm to 105mm, or when I turn the zoom ring slowly.

I have to admit, up until now, I have only been using two primes (Batis 25mm and Sony 55mm), so I have no idea whether that is considered normal behavior for a zoom lens or whether that signals some misalignment of parts in the interior of the lens.

I would be glad if some of you could help me out and try it on their lens and report back.

Many thanks!

Hi. I just tested on my copy, and it doesn't make any sound while zooming completely in or out.
There is no difference if I zoom between 50-105 or 24-50, or 35-70. The feel, sound and resistance is identical.

It should not make any noise beyond slight friction from seals rubbing together. I would caution against zooming too quickly though. The excursion on this lens is over 2" and the throw (turn of the ring) is less than 90 degrees, so this steep a helical has a lot of leverage working against it.

Many thanks for your help!

It seems to be the camera body and not the lens. When not attached to the camera, the lens does not make any sound when zooming in or out. I guess that a lot of air is moved inside the lens and if I zoom from 105mm to 70mm all this air is sucked out of the zoom. I guess that this then moves the sensor in the camera, which makes the noise (I have the A7RII and A7II, so the sensor is "floating" due to IBIS). As soon as I turn the camera on and IBIS is engaged and thus "fixes" the position of the sensor, there is no sound when zooming.

Sorry for bothering you and taking up your time - I could have thought of that myself...

Here's another shot with 24-105 at 24mm. Pretty impressive. Full jpeg.

I checked for any unusual noise with my copy. I believe what I may be hearing is the normal operation from the element groups moving inside the lens combined with the mechanics of the body. Seems pretty normal to me.

Without seeing them it’s hard to know if this is just the inconsistency that AF always has to various degrees. Look at Jim Kasson article about focus on the D850 and the riii. The longer the lens the more obvious. Of course if you use small flexible spot and position it carefully using afs there will be less, but still some, inconsistency. There’s a reason people use MF in situations where they can...

B&H was showing today as the day they would get more stock of this lens. However, they now just say backordered without an expected date. Bummer!

Unless you need the lens to ship immediately I wouldn't worry about it. It seems like Sony is getting enough inventory out to keep the backorder wait to a minimum. When I ordered mine it was backordered and it shipped the next day.

I was just going to post this. B&H Photo just alerted me they finally got a shipment of the new FE 24-105/4G. This lens is very popular right now and I'm sure it will sell very fast. Here is the link:

This is a weird lens. I am getting more consistent shots now that are quite sharp. We aren't talking about AI unless mine. lol But, with nothing really changed, I am getting better results, obviously a good thing when dynamic conditions are occurring or you only take one shot, not thinking you need 2 or 3 to make sure you have one in correct focus. Maybe the lens needs to break-in but never had this before.

Yay! My lens shipped today from B&H via UPS 3-day. Should get it around the first of next week. Looking forward to it.

Hope remains, Bob!

I put in my order but haven’t received any word yet. I may not have made this shipment.

Fingers crossed for you, Bob. I called earlier this week and the B&H person didn't seem to be s concern that they wouldn't be able to fulfill all backorders, plus new orders. That was the impression I got anyway.

I'm scheduled for next Tuesday delivery (possibly Monday). Already in UPS hands.

I've been comparing my 24-105mm f4 v Zeiss CY 35-70mm f3.4

The Zeiss is sharper @35mm f8 in the corners and @50mm f8 in the corners.
The 24-105 is slightly sharper in the middle of the frame.

The Zeiss CY 100mm f3.5 v 24-105mm f4 @f8

The zeiss is sharper in the extreme corners, but it's splitting hairs everywhere else.
