I've been thinking... Even though I said I'd pass on it, I would actually order an A7RIII if I knew with certainty that there wouldn't be an A9R. I'd sell my A7RII, move to the A7RIII (along with my A9) and be done.
I might end up buying a second A9 instead, though. I'm realizing by using the A9 that 24MP really is plenty. Sure, there's more sharpness to be had by using a sensor with greater pixel density, but 24MP gives TONS of detail when using Eye AF and great lenses.

Thanks Jonathan. I definitely will get an A9r though it may be awhile before it shows up. As I shoot a lot in available light, the A9 is my preferred tool as it also has superb high ISO performance.
Nevertheless, I am looking forward to the FE 400/2.8 GM OSS prime. Shooting it with A9 @ f/2.8 instead of the FE 100-400/4.5-5.6 GM OSS @ 400mm, f/5.6, or @ 560mm, f/4 as compared to the zoom @ 560mm, f/8, or @ 800mm, f/5.6 as compared to the zoom @ 800mm, f/11 should be enlightening, provided the FE 400/2.8 lives up to high expectations. I sure hope it will!.

Man I’m torn between this and the a9 for my wedding photography.... after watching Jason Lanier’s video with the a7R3.... looks really good in low light.

I’m all in now on the A7rIII. My A9 sold to a wedding shooter which is perfect for him.I just hope this was a good decision for me. Maybe my most risky purchase, not knowing shit how this preforms. I can’t watch JL it makes me ill.

JL certainly raises high expectations about the performance of the A7r3. Let's hope he is right!
Do I understand that correctly that in addition to face detection the A7r3 has also automatic eye detection without that one has to do anything special?
That would be a nice feature for the A9 to get with a FW update.

I'm leaving on a trip to South America for a month on Dec. 2nd so I've got pre-orders in at B&H (I'm like 3000 down the list) and The Camera Store (top 25) but I have no idea which will deliver first and I can't afford to keep all these pre-orders active lest I end up with multiple cameras - on the other hand, it would be a shame to head out on this trip without the new RIII

If I were a wedding photog (and I'm not) I'd take the A9 any day. The benefit for the A7RIII is MP and that's one area where you don't see much demand for abnormally large prints. Sure their might be a slight low-light improvement, but it'll be marginal to the A9. I will be very surprised if one ends up being able to pick the two out of a lineup at normal viewing size. With the A9 you have far more opportunity to get 'the shot' due to the speed, and for a wedding where you only have one shot at it, increasing the probability of getting it would be my focus, not marginal noise improvements.

Just sold my A9 and it’s a little painful as really the bottom line on all of this is for a 24mpx sensor it’s absolutely the best cam you can buy in Sony. There is no question about about it’s overall speed , awesome files and ability to shoot lights out with it. Now having said that the A7rIII will be the best 42mpx sensor cam you can by. If the speed of operation and abilities can come reasonable close to the A9 than it’s going to be a winning camera. We have to be realistic about this. No 42mpx camera from any brand will match the abilities of the A9 period. We have to accept this as 42mpx owners that we are going after top end IQ and resolution. With that there will be some limitations as far as speed. You lose the 93 percent AF coverage and down to 63 percent. You lose FPS, we may also lose AF tracking somewhat and speed to acquire and hold subject but your also gaining here too. Frankly these are the two best cams in the market, I discount Nikon/ canon because they mean nothing to me. I shoot Sony period and all I care about , I’m never going back.
So the bottom line is you need to decide what works best for your usage. 24 mpx can do far more than many will ever need. Don’t ignore that. 42mpx gets you more elbow room. For some we need that and willing to pay a price for that. Bigger files, more heavy computing, more storage and slower operational speed and functions. These are both great cams . I hope theA7rIII works for me because giving up the A9 was very hard. It’s a great great cam.
I have high hopes for the A7rIII and I think it’s worth the upgrade regardless what you shoot of the A7rII. Lots of extras besides the same sensor.

I'm telling myself that I should treat my cameras like my pets, and don't get rid off them whenever I still love them and they're still working very well, regardless of whatever newly released. I'm trying to control my GAS ;-)

From your fingers to Sony's eyes...Just a bit more room, Don't make it a me too Canon or Nikon...please.. This would work with the '9' series and be a plus for ergonomics for those use to "pro" cameras, but it won't happen. The new A9 is this generation's form factor ..
