Just talked about that above - looks like APS-C is 18MP as in previous models. Will that work for you?

That's not ideal, but I can live with it.

Would love to see how an A9 @6400 ISO compares to a A7R3 @6400 downsized to 24mp. I'd most likely be exporting at 6000px on the wide end (wedding work)

Also the touchless shutter app was awesome for long exposures when I didn't want to disturb the camera and introduce camera shake. I wish they'd keep it or at least integrate it into the menu to preserve the functionality!

I love touchless shutter too. I really hate carrying and dealing with external accessories for stuff that can be done in camera.

They've just kind of let it sit there in "beta" for years now. It works great and it's a big help, just make it an option already Sony. I'd even map enabling to a hard button if I could, that's how much I'd use it.

Just so frustrating that so much of this stuff is so close but ignored.

Couple of questions about Pixel Shift if possible.

1) Do you get a raw file once these files are combined?
2) Can the technology be used with flash lighting? (we use Profoto D1's which have <1% variation between frames from our testing).

I run a repro studio and a camera like this could be a far more budget friendly solution for very high resolution capture than the 100mp MFDB solution we were looking at (fantasising over ). Even with the lenses it will require to maximise the potential. No it won't be as good, possibly not even close but yes it might

I would imagine since the files are not combined in camera and need to use the Sony supplied software, RAW files should be left in tact.

So while I'm not a birder....I know some Sony shooters are, and I wonder for them whether this camera will do continuous autofocus at f/11 with something like the 100-400 with a 2xTC attached? I know the A9 does, however the A7R2 does not. And that's a whole lot more pixels at 800mm with the A7R3....

Has Sony ever had new cameras back ordered like the d850 is? I didn't order the a7rii on release so I don't remember. I know they didn't with the a9, but that obviously won't sell as much as this.

Just wondering since it took me a good 5 minutes instead of 1 like some of you =)

Even with the a7rII I got mine at launch. I didn't get my order in until 12 today, so I'm far down the list. Going to be an expensive two days, with the a7rIII today and the iPhone X tomorrow.

^^Well I got my order in sometime between 10 & 10:05, but if it takes a few shipments, that's fine. My A7R2 still works just as good today as it did a few days ago when I assumed I'd be using it well into 2018 (didn't expect an A7R3 already), so I figure I'll survive.

Why does it drop to 12-bits during BULB, or with Long Exposure NR turned on? Whyyyyyyyy Sony?

Has anyone found some low light samples shots?

Good I am not discerning enough to notice a bad picture simply because it was shot in 12 bit

Ya I think Sony will be more than prepared to fill the orders on release date. Good to know, thanks!

No, I haven’t. It doesn’t offer enough resolution compared to what I have for general work and the lack of Sony 500mm or 600mm lenses prevent it from being an alternative to my 1DX for BIF.

Plus the comments about some people having trouble fitting their fingers between the grip and the 100-400mm lens tells me Sony still is making computers first and cameras second.

Well, as someone who actually uses an A9 for photography, I don't think your comment about Sony "still making computers first and cameras second" is a fair or accurate characterization of Sony's camera division... not at all. Figuring this stuff out takes time, and it's hard to please everyone. With the embarrassment of riches we have nowadays in the equipment to choose from, someone will inevitably whine about some thing or another - my pinky hurts, my fingers are crammed, the camera is too heavy, too light, too many buttons, too few buttons... on and on. But Sony has, in a very short time, been able to create some fabulous equipment, and that doesn't really reflect a company that misunderstands what camera users want... quite the contrary I think. Comparing the original A7 to the A9 is a great way to see how much progress Sony has made in very little time. What has Canon done in the same time in the way of cameras? Or even Nikon?

Some independent photo bloggers wrote a very interesting article about their visit to Sony's camera division that is real eye-opener, and revealed a great deal to me about how Sony, a company that is pretty much an undisputed leader in sensor technology today, thinks about the photography market as a whole. You can find it here. It certainly shattered any notion I had of Sony not putting the needs of photographers first.

Look at the right side where it talks about 16-bit processing and 14 bit raw files. Asterisks at the bottom.

Why is this a thing? What is the technical rationale as to why data must be thrown away when processing the least time-sensitive (i.e. not 10fps fast) shooting operations. I don't understand why it is even designed this way, at all. If I'm shooting super long exposures, why can I not have the most data that is possible?

Also, I'm assuming that Sony continues to offer true uncompressed raw files that don't even have any lossless compression thus ensuring lots of wasted storage space because they took the customer demand of uncompressed raw to it's most literal sense.

The anti-distortion shutter is, I think, a very important differentiating feature of the A9. Initially, I was a little miffed that I didn't hold out for 2 more weeks before buying the A9 (didn't see the A7RIII coming) but I'm actually coming to terms with it because the no blackout viewfinder, larger AF area, and anti-distortion shutter are all important to me.
Looks like I may be holding on to the A7RII and the A9 and wait to see if there's an A9R.

The A9 is really the king in Sony except for mpx. I’m going to sell mine at some point here but not exactly happy about it either

If PlayMemories apps are no longer supported, what about 1) Interval timer shooting (Time-Lapse app) and 2) Shooting with your smartphone over wifi (Remote Control app)? Couldn't find any info about those two modes reading quickly over the spec sheet. Hard to imagine these shooting modes are left out. Probably no worries.

I don't know yet. I presume the software will export a normalised/curved/colour balanced (i.e. not RAW) file, but it might also output a full colour DNG. If not it should be possible to write some code to generate a DNG from the data (which as far as I can tell comes off the camera pretty much RAW).

Yes.

Sony have said that flash sync speed drops to 1/13s when you use the pixel shift mode. This indicates that you can use flash, that pixel shift uses the electronic shutter (which makes a lot of sense, you don't want to jog the sensor even the tiniest amount) and that the electronic shutter has the same scan time as the A7RII.

What it might not do, is wait for your strobes to recycle between shots so you'd better have a big power pack!

Because the extra two bits would just oversample noise and thus waste image space, despite how clean the Sony FF sensors are.

This is the first time I have seen anyone openly admit they are cooking the raw data. Now using 16 bit processing. That is probably what they did to claim 15 stops of DR from the same sensor.

I've sort of always assumed all manufactures do at least some processing to the RAW data, such as black point subtraction or normalisation, and that you never get exactly the bits that come out of the ADC in your RAW file.

This could just be the marketing department exaggerating as usual, they're always going on about "natural graduations" etc.

If its anything like the A9 implementation you use the Playmemories Mobile app with the camera for remote control, image transfer and GPS.
