Becoming more intriguing, but short of fast long teles still not interesting enough compared to Nikon or Canon for BIF. And still that body and that menu system.

Also wondering what their naming convention now means: does A9whatever stand for speed, body type, low resolution?

Still not seeing the sony movement, don't you. Overall will be different ball game in couple years for soncanikon.

I’ve tried. I have had the A7R, A7II, A7S and the A7RII (plus the RX1 and RII) and a host of lenses. I’ve experienced what I judge to be the limitations in person and, despite my love for their FF sensors and Zeiss lenses, I’m still waiting for a camera I like that they’ll put those sensors in and I can put those lenses on.

I’m not the only one saying that and I believe that if they improved their menu system and made their bodies more intuitive and easier to handle, they truly could kill Canon and Nikon before those brands catch up, as they will.

Have you tried the A9? I'm having a hard time understanding what there isn't to like about that camera. The ergonomics and customizability are superb. There are a few quirks that I would love to take out of the buried menus, and some commonly used things (like formatting cards) are little more deeply buried than I'd prefer. I'd also like to a lock on the rear function wheel (I use if for ISO, and more than once it gets bumped to the wrong ISO). But between the custom buttons and the 3 memory modes, I'm hard pressed to find things that really put me off. And this is from someone who just came over from Nikon and Leica cameras, both of which have outstanding ergonomics.

No, I haven’t. It doesn’t offer enough resolution compared to what I have for general work and the lack of Sony 500mm or 600mm lenses prevent it from being an alternative to my 1DX for BIF.

Plus the comments about some people having trouble fitting their fingers between the grip and the 100-400mm lens tells me Sony still is making computers first and cameras second.

Well, as someone who actually uses an A9 for real photography, I don't think your comment about Sony "still making computers first and cameras second" is a fair or accurate characterization of Sony's camera division... not at all. Figuring this stuff out takes time, and it's hard to please everyone. With the embarrassment of riches we have nowadays in the equipment to choose from, someone will inevitably whine about some thing or another - my pinky hurts, my fingers are crammed, the camera is too heavy, too light, too many buttons, too few buttons... on and on. But Sony has, in a very short time, been able to create some fabulous equipment, and that doesn't really reflect a company that misunderstands what camera users want... quite the contrary I think. Comparing the original A7 to the A9 is a great way to see how much progress Sony has made in very little time. What has Canon done in the same time in the way of cameras? Or even Nikon?

Some independent photo bloggers wrote a very interesting article about their visit to Sony's camera division that is real eye-opener, and revealed a great deal to me about how Sony, a company that is pretty much an undisputed leader in sensor technology today, thinks about the photography market as a whole. You can find it here. It certainly shattered any notion I had of Sony not putting the needs of photographers first.
