AF tracking doesn't work so well. Certainly nothing like the A9. Just watch dancers from 1:05.
The camera is clearly in Expand Flex Spot Small mode in that part of the clip. The dancers just leave and enter the small AF area, that part of clip tells nothing about tracking.

With Sony software available for free with PhaseOne, I'm really curious as to how they will handle the pixel shift.
As a 1 FPS or slower landscape shooter on a tripod the A7R3 seems to answer all my current needs. Coupled with Helicon 6 focus stacking, bokeh hopefully should be completely eliminated. FINALLY!

Pre-ordered For me I'm most looking forward to (compared to my A7R II):
Faster AF
Dual card slots, as only one slot makes for incredibly dangerous wedding photography
Slightly higher dynamic range, ideally a little less need for me to use HDR
Slightly higher VF resolution, possibly useful for manual focus
Can't say I'm disappointed about the resolution, although if it had been higher I'd be happy to crop even more and use long lenses less in some cases (yes aware cropping isn't the same as the native focal length)
It's a minor shame the maximum shutter speed isn't increased beyond 1/8000, as I'm sometimes shooting at f/1.4 outdoors in bright sunlight.
I'd be very happy if star eater was fixed, but I doubt it (based on the fact it's still present on the A9).
Overall, it appears it's not a leap forward but likely a solid step forward, and that's ok

How do you guys think this will stack up as a wedding camera? I have the a7ii now and was going to get the a9 but this has me intrigued...
My only thing would be the massive files coming out of the a7r3
well the massive files already come out of the A7rii, and I just use a dng converter for my family photos, I only need 10mp for those, working with 2-3MB raws is a breeze.

I’m curious Charles. Why did you leave Sony and what feature here has you wanting to come back. I know you are enjoying your D850.

Totally agree It is great that we have competition and really Sony just had to use existing hardware, tweak the A7rII sensor combined with the A9 features. Having 42MP is more than enough and later when the sensor development cycle permits Sony can release a higher MP version at an appropriate pricing level. The pricing and features are a direct response to the D850 and everyone wins. I think Sony realized that you cannot just demand pricing level and expect the market to follow, so the A7III hopefully will come in an appropriate lower pricing level.
I have the D850 which I love for all the features with DSLR and the specialty lenses, but I will also acquire the A7rIII if the specs stack up. I know many dismiss the DR, but having the D750 and D850, the DR is superb and I find it hard to go backwards. If the spec'd DR of 15 is real this is great. I suspect it is like how the D850 was marketed with marginal improvement all round. For me the A7rIII package now will be minimal with careful selection of small/light lenses and I see it as a replacement for my Fuji XT2 system. I was also seriously considering the M10, but the A7rIII will fill this niche also. ...Show more →

If the A7RII is selling for $1600 the A9 is probably going to be somewhere that sellers will have a tough time stomaching what others are willing to pay.

B&S board is already loaded with A7rII cams. This maybe a very popular cam in the coming days

Once the RIII starts delivering and reports start coming in. Before that, I suspect people will hold onto the RII in case they feel the new camera is a dog in some way.
I'm thinking I'll get a second RII sometime in the next few months. No hurry for me at all. That will give me the time to see what happens with the RIII in case something really great occurs, like the pixel shift shows a remarkable improvement in output sharpness (and if I decide I need that for some copy work I'm doing these days).

One question is what base ISO measures out as. Currently the rII is 13.9 on Dxomark. A full stop increase would take it up to the D810 level, which is pretty good. But as a person that doesn't use AF that much, the rII at 1600 used is pretty darn hard to argue with!

I wonder when the best time to buy a used a7rII would be? Now? next week? After the a7rIII ships?
I think mid January will be a great time to buy a A7RII (or a Nikon D810 for that matter). Both these great cameras should be heavily discounted by then.

It would be great if a third party software could build the pixel shifted image for better color output and at the same time, average the four images using a median stack for better signal to noise ratio. Two birds, one stone.
