You've gotta admire the rat cunning wizards at Sony. They've spent very little in developing this new money spinner which essentially packages the A7Rii electronics (with some firmware tweaks) in an A9 body (minus the left dial)

At least for me this is a big drawback - maybe Sony "fixes" it in a future firmware update for the MkIII, but it goes clearly backwards! I am often using the Smooth Reflection, the Lens Correction, and the Multi (Dual) Exposure apps on my A7R....

Have you tried the A9? I'm having a hard time understanding what there isn't to like about that camera. The ergonomics and customizability are superb. There are a few quirks that I would love to take out of the buried menus, and some commonly used things (like formatting cards) are little more deeply buried than I'd prefer. I'd also like to a lock on the rear function wheel (I use if for ISO, and more than once it gets bumped to the wrong ISO). But between the custom buttons and the 3 memory modes, I'm hard pressed to find things

No, I haven’t. It doesn’t offer enough resolution compared to what I have for general work and the lack of Sony 500mm or 600mm lenses prevent it from being an alternative to my 1DX for BIF.

Plus the comments about some people having trouble fitting their fingers between the grip and the 100-400mm lens tells me Sony still is making computers first and cameras second.

I already have an a9 and love it, was a little bummed at first seeing all the features of the a7r3 listed at $1300 less than I paid for my a9...But the new model doesn't take anything away the fact that the a9 is the best body I've ever used. So, my lust has been tempered.
My hope now it that a7r2 prices drop and I get a cheap a7r2 for landscape and hiking. If I didn't have the a9 I'd certainly pre-order the a7r3 tomorrow morning.
Sony is an exciting brand to own right now...

I've seen several people say "same AF as A9" but it's not.
From Sony's A9 page: "The phase-detection points on the surface of an image sensor — 693 AF points — covers approximately 93% of the image area."
From Sony's A7RIII page: "Fast Hybrid AF with 399-point focal-plane phase-detection AF and 425-point contrast-detection AF"

Also, there's mention on the A9 page about the calculations per second for tracking but the A7RIII page doesn't have anything like that (not saying it doesn't do it, just that it's not mentioned).

So, it doesn't appear to be exactly the same and it's possible that the A9

The only metric Sony have released is that AF raw (not RAW) AF is 2x as fast as A7RII as well as tracking performance is 2x as fast. That’s a good improvement but it needed to be. Also Eye tracking AF is supposed to be same as A9 performance. Overall A9 will be better, but will A7RIII be good enough for fast action now.

It's a bit outrageous that the rumors sites got this all wrong though. Really nobody was expecting a A7RIII with the same 42.2MP sensor! How about the new 24-105/4 G??
It just shows that Sony learned to keep these specs very tight until the release date. (At least until the last day before it. )

Sony did not need to make the A9 so small, it did not have to be the same size as A7RII. Pro cameras aren’t large just for the fun of it. A9 II needs to be larger and have larger buttons. It would only take a 3-4mm in height and width to make it much nicer, and the weight would barely change.

You should watch ultra-long-range marksmanship someday, especially offhand, to see how capable people are at "getting the shot" at the exact moment of stillness.

On the topic of physical control, reflexes and stamina -- it is true that here is incredible diversity in our species, and marketing and teachers need to "dumb down" maxims to the average level of skill. I'd say conservatively that the majority of participants on this forum are highly skilled and considerably above the average when it come to motion control.

That said, I still look to the reciprocal shutter and lens speeds for yardsticks, just like Sunny 16 Rule.

For the record, I'm looking for ultra-sharp pictures hand held, and frequently shoot at higher speeds than needed in good light as insurance and "best practices".

Maybe the 850 had some influence on the release timing of the A7R3.

Totally agree It is great that we have competition and really Sony just had to use existing hardware, tweak the A7rII sensor combined with the A9 features. Having 42MP is more than enough and later when the sensor development cycle permits Sony can release a higher MP version at an appropriate pricing level. The pricing and features are a direct response to the D850 and everyone wins. I think Sony realized that you cannot just demand pricing level and expect the market to follow, so the A7III hopefully will come in an appropriate lower pricing level.

I have the D850 which I love for all the features with DSLR and the specialty lenses, but I will also acquire the A7rIII if the specs stack up. I know many dismiss the DR, but having the D750 and D850, the DR is superb and I find it hard to go backwards. If the spec'd DR of 15 is real this is great. I suspect it is like how the D850 was marketed with marginal improvement all round. For me the A7rIII package now will be minimal with careful selection of small/light lenses and I see it as a replacement for my Fuji XT2 system. I was also seriously considering the M10, but the A7rIII will fill this niche also.

Yep! I stay with Sony as my main imaging gear because of the wonderful images and a few features like IBIS; certainly not for the menu, controls, ergonomics, size, or owner's manual -- which all suck, IMO.

In looking at the video posted above by dolina (from 1:05) the AF tracking performance seems comparable to the A7Rii, not the A9. It barely maintains focus on the dancers as they move around.

How do you guys think this will stack up as a wedding camera? I have the a7ii now and was going to get the a9 but this has me intrigued...

My only thing would be the massive files coming out of the a7r3

Actually wondered if Sony was giving the rumor sites false info regarding the a7III so folks who initially wanted an a7r2 with upgraded AF decided not to wait for an a7r3 and grab the a9 for $4500.

I am surprised they did not update the A7II, as it is the oldest mkII, but I guess it may be the biggest seller, and someone remarked that A7III might take sales off the A9 if too close.

So I guess Sony wants sales of the A9 and A7II to co exist.
