Wow, I had forgotten how bad that can be. Definitely, some thing to think about and avoid. What aperture does it typically go away at?
One stop later at f/1.7 it's just as good as the 35/1.7 Ultron.

I shot jpg's to the second card as backup and went through some of them today. This is straight out of camera jpeg shot as extra fine with no adjustments made in post. I'm blown away at how nice a job the A7R3 did.

I joined the club...picked up an m mont copy--I haven't been this pleasantly surprised by a lens in sometime. Why can't more manufactures understand that small lenses like this that cover FF are superb?
Just in case, I can confirm from my experience that there are a some copy variations.
My second copy of 40/1.2 for E-mount is miles ahead of first one in terms of sharpness. Clearly, it is not tack sharp at f/1.2 and this is not a surprise. But difference is dramatic. Second copy is very sharp already at 1.6. First one was reaching the same level of sharpness at f/2.2-f/2.5.
Though, It says nothing about how present this issue is. It could be just single bad copy from whole production batch, which I was lucky to get! )))
