Such a great piece of glass with multiple personality disorder :-) Dreamy and filmy wide open, razor sharp and transparent stopped down.

Has anyone compared the performance of the 40mm to the older Nokton 35mm 1.2 v2? Curious to use one of the two on an APS-C sensor. Saw a few posts from this lens on a Fuji X-T2, and it performs wonderfully - avoiding the common sensor stack issues of M-mount lenses it seems. TIA
Yeah I was the one that had the CV 40mm f/1.2 VM on X-T2 for a brief period before switching to Sony A7III. Just be careful - it might tempt you to upgrade to a bigger sensor as it did in my case...
On a crop sensor it rendered incredibly beautiful images and I really loved it. From what I've read, it's the sharper one compared to the CV 35mm f/1.2. But to be honest, at maximum aperture the 40mm was actually a little bit soft on a 24Mp crop sensor. Images were great and sharp when resized to about 4000px at long edge (2/3rds of the original). Good thing is that colors, rendering etc. were something special and it really didn't bother me at all and the performance was miles ahead any vintage glass I ever used on my Fujis.
After using the lens on Sony for the summer (and loved it as my favourite lens ever), I finally sold it so that I could get the FE version instead. And just today I finally picked it up(!!!) from the courier office terminal. The delivery would have been after the x-mas holidays and I didn't want to wait a week and miss the opportunity to shoot with it during that time.
So finally it is in my hands! Now where's my camera... Dammit. Left it home today. Oh well. At least it feels gorgeous in my hands. My precioussssss... (Expect images later next week.)

So, after all this time...
Is the CV 40/1.2 Nokton still a top lens for you?
I've only had it a week or so & only been out with it once Fred!! But, previously for a few years, my favourite lens has been the CV40/1.4 Classic in M mount so I can see this one taking over in most circumstances. The f/1.4 still has a more unique look though.

This thread continues to chip away at my willpower. I tell myself I don't "need" it, and it's only MF, and AF would give me more options for use in theory...but then I see the results, and the size of the thing, and f/1.2, and think "I only have one MF lens, maybe I need another one for practice".
Really glad I didn't get that B&H email some got, I'm guessing I'd have bought it. And I see it's on backorder now, so my guess is even a call in won't help.
If you see it in stock. Buy it!
I paid £750 over here plus I got a 10% cashback off of that price. I've seen two used ones both sell on eBay for £840!!
This lens was my only lens for the first half of 2018 and the only one I used on my Leica M-P. I only sold it when I sold my M-P. Now that I'm back in Leicaland, guess which lens was the first one I purchased?
Here's a smattering of photos from my first copy, taken over the course of several months in the first half of the year. I chose these photos to provide a sense of how this lens performed for me wide open at near-distances, mid-distances, and backlit. I was always struck with the separation you could achieve with this wide angle lens at mid-distances.

I don't have any comparison shots, but I had the Nokton 35 F1.2 ASPH (v2), and really liked the rendering, though I didn't shoot with it often.
IME, it rendered nicely and was pretty sharp too, at least in the center
Here are some samples of the 35 on an A7RII, FWIW.

Perhaps that's why they released the Voigtlander 35/1.4 E-mount....to please those looking for even more character. I secretively love that lens.
It has a distinctively look wide open but by f/2.5 it's as modern as the 40/1.2 at same aperture. The extreme corners need f/8-10 to be sharp though. Could still be a landscape lens but there are better choices for that...I really like mine for family pictures and flower close-ups for its painterly look.
I bought the 35 1.4 E and I liked it but it bugged me I had to stop down some to get the center good. Tons of character but I’m a little too nit picky for it. I thought my usage would be limited too
I’m waiting on the 50 1.2 in E mount. I loved it in the M mount. So I might have both the 40 and 50. Now that maybe crazy but I did like that 50 a lot

I'm thinking you got a bad copy of the CV 35/1.4 E-mount. A center, it's as sharp as the 40/1.2 wide open. The CV 40/1.2 is a bit better at mid-distance but the 35/1.4 is also sharp. Perhaps the 35 is a tad hazier in comparison.

I can't see me selling the 40/1.4M to be honest. Certainly not in the foreseeable future anyway.
It was the corner smearing that really used to nark me on some shots followed by the wide aperture glow. Yes, sometimes that works, but more often than not (for me) it didn't.
I just need more shooting time that's all (Plus I picked up the CV21/3.5E too.....)
