I opted for the M over the E because of the cheaper price, smaller size, and ability to use it on non-Sony cameras and modded sensors. I love mine. I think you'll be ok
Not sure how much of the thread you've gone through, but there are a bunch of sample images with the M Mount earlier in the thread from @Nampramos, @nehemiahphoto and myself. Found some just now by going to page 100.

Sorry to read that you feel that the shortage of this item is the fault of Adorama - if you have a spare minute to email me: [email protected] to share how we could be making more of these units available for our customers, I would be grateful.

I'd like to know my place in line. Ordered my 4/10/18 Order A2018022616471877087
I gotta give props to Photo Village - although I didn't receive any tracking info, I ordered it 5/2 and it was here 5/3, (though I didn't get it til today because sig was required), and those people know how to pack a box for shipping!
Thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely order from them in the future.

It is easy. Magic! :^)
I would like to know why the distributors are getting them, selling out, but not supplying the retailers. This is a bad business practice. The dist. gets a deeper cut of course on the price so that they can sell to retailers but by selling directly, they make a much better profit, Still, this doesn't make it right by any stretch.

My M just came in. The VE is nice and compact, but the VM is another level. LOVE it on the camera. Looking forward to testing.
Can you elaborate more? Another level means better or smaller? On which sony camera? Do you use tap or front lens? Thanks.
Apologies for causing a misunderstanding, wasn’t my intent to place all blame on Adorama, and I was just referencing the previous poster that mentioned he ordered from Adorama two months ago. But in that time, at least one and possibly two batches have shipped, and several people have gotten “walk-in” orders fulfilled, yet he still doesn’t have a lens. Obviously Adorama can’t control the whole supply chain, and I don’t think any business would do different than Adorama has done here. But something isn’t working right, and all parts of the supply chain share some blame. Still like Adorama, and appreciate what you do for the forums.

Strictly speaking size, haven’t had a chance to really look at images from it. Using it on an A7RII and A7R, checking with a few thin filter mods, but need to find a good, repeatable test of the curvature the stock stack causes.
Related, can anyone explain the value proposition of the CV 35/1.2 now? If you strictly need 35mm, okay, but this 40 is a good bit smaller and better, yet the 35 is still $100 more new...

OooOOooo
Sweet, can't wait. I'm so so so tempted by this - as you're probably aware that I can live with a lens' faults and love small things. I've already been through swapping my E Mount out a million times in my head for an M mount.
I gotta be honest though - I hate the chrome nose. Both for aesthetics and for practicality. Gah. Not sure why they did that.
I'm mostly interested in close-focusing on the M version, so let me know how that goes. Still debating a Kolari mod for the a7S- love to ditch the AA filter as well, but it seems extravagant right now.
Excited for you, and for everyone else who recently picked one up. Keeping fingers crossed for those still waiting.
I have 4 Zeiss ZF lenses with the chrome ring and it's never been an issue for me.
Got a note today from CameraQuest today saying the FE 40/1.2 is on track for arrival 5/14. I'm going with the FE for electronic integration and better IQ.
I can see why Derek likes this lens. If you do get an M mount, a thin filter is a good idea. Unfortunately, if I removed the filter completely and tried a front end filter, I couldn't reach infinity anymore. I'm skeptical that a PCX fix would allow infinity either, and I'm not quite willing to tear it open looking for shims etc. Planning to convert my A7RII to use a clip in filter anyway, so probably just do that sooner.
Edit just tried a 5000mm PCX and seems to be close, certainly better than bare stock, but focus is limited to about 7' as expected.
To my eye this thin filter is about a stop better. The website says it's a 1.1mm filter, so should be similar to a Kolari V2. If I recall the UT is 0.7mm, probably performs better, but the AWB on this is much better than Kolari's UT (and I think V2, but my memory is murky.)
None of these are centers, wanted to look more at borders and edges.
