p.122 #1 · Voigtlander 40mm f/1.2 Nokton Review

Hi there

I have been in touch with Photo Village today as I had not received a tracking number or anything.

They did indeed send the lens on Monday via USPS

The best way to reach them is the call the number on the site. Rosie will answer. She is so sweet and helpful. She immediately emailed a tracking number.

I think they are a small operation and not very sophisticated. However, I will support them again.

Ah well... any chance you’ll ever un-glue it to see if it’s worth getting a 5000mm pcx for the M version On a stock sensor? I forget if you have a stock anymore...

I’d be grateful but no worries if you don’t get to it.

Here's my report after a few weeks.

I understand why this lens is stapled to many of your cameras.
Compact, lightweight, Smooth MF, versatile f1.2, excellent IQ, and handles very very well.
I find myself pairing it with the A9 + a small bag. So now I'll more often leave my house with that combo as apposed to just leaving the camera at home. The shots I'm getting of my family are so rewarding. Many will be printed!
The more I use it, the more I want to schlep it with next time. Such an addictive lens.

Hype levels of this thread are warranted IMO, even though It may not make total sense @ first. The Nocton seems to have the Costanza effect. At least in my case.

pleaseshoot - that's exactly my take on the lens as well. I am finding that I carry it in a Peak Designs 5l Sling when I go out whereas before I may have left the camera at home

That's interesting.

What CameraQuest magazine?

I have not heard about a planned .95 in FE mount.

One thing I’m looking forward too is the M 40 on a naked A7R, with a front end hot mirror or a clip in hot mirror which should be roughly equal to a Kolari v2, maybe a bit better. Might be relevant to decisions on how to cover your monochrome sensor...

Oh, been meaning to ask after I saw you like to tinker with these things - have you ever hacked an LCD on an a7[x]? I'm considering trying out a mod for low-angle portrait orientation shots, with some sort of hinge to enable the monitor to flip that direction. Any pointers or words of caution?

Also good enough as a hiking lens. Small enough to carry around, sharp enough for landscapes, f1.2 when you need it.

Getting that deep into the cameras is pretty easy, you're mostly just taking off the rear frame. As to your hack, unless you have access to custom flex cables or the ability to do fine soldering I don't think it will work, the cable that runs from the board to the LCD is pretty much the exact length, and don't think it would swing the other way well. Also, it looks to be clamped to the existing frame, so you'd have to completely remove the current frame, which the LCD is attached too (in a strange manner, hard to remove). Unless you're an excellent fabricator you're likely just going to completely trash the rear of the camera. And if you do get it working, the risk of pinching the flex will be high.

I'd honestly just recommend something like a Flipbac.

Ahh, that was what I was afraid of. Thanks for talking sense into me - need to look into external monitors for video anyway.

Side note: the Nokton is equally magical on video. Holy moly, I love this thing.

It's almost 2 months since I placed my order with Adorama for this lens. I have a trip next week, and I assume I won't have the lens. It's rather frustrating to see Voigtlander severely under produce and under estimate demand.

Hard to fault CV, I've been paying attention to this lens for a while and seems demand has accelerated significantly. They weren't hard to find at all a few months ago, but as more and more people got a hold of it and talked about it, they got more and more scarce. Seems Adorama is at least a bit at fault too, since batches of availability have popped up a couple times in the past 2 months. Might be worth seeing what your place is in their line, make sure you haven't been forgotten...

Thanks for the tip. I have some credits with Adorama I need to use, so I kind of need to wait. The one on buy-sell is basically used but selling at MSRP after shipping and fees. I can use the 16-35 GM on the trip which should be fine. It would be nice to have the Nokton when walking around at night etc. Oh well. Hopefully it’s worth the wait.

That is disappointing. The Nokton is a great walkaround lens. Don't let it ruin the trip though take your smallest prime and enjoy.

Ive been lurking this thread for over a month now. Couldn't wait any longer for 40 1.2 emounts to become available again and went with the VM version with the VM-E Close focus adapter. I'm hoping I don't regret my purchase =(

Yayy first post!

I opted for the M over the E because of the cheaper price, smaller size, and ability to use it on non-Sony cameras and modded sensors. I love mine. I think you'll be ok
