It's easy to calculate:

2 * arctan (43.3 / 2xFL) where 43.3mm is the full frame diagonal size.

You can use this arctan calculator:
https://www.rapidtables.com/calc/math/Arctan_Calculator.html

So, in the case of your Loxia 21mm, let's plug the numbers:

2 * arctan (43.3 / 2x21) = 2 * arctan (1.03) = 2 * 45.84 = 91.68 degrees diagonal (AOV)

This website calculates the angles if you dont want to run the numbers yourself - https://www.pointsinfocus.com/tools/depth-of-field-and-equivalent-lens-calculator/#{%22c%22:[{%22f%22:13,%22av%22:%228%22,%22fl%22:50,%22d%22:3048,%22cm%22:%220%22}],%22m%22:0}

Fred - (This may be a daft question!) - When comparing AOV I note that most people quote the diagonal angle. Would the horizontal angle not give a better representation of what is being captured as it will relate to the edges of the image? (or does it not really matter what one you compare as long as you are consistent?)

EDIT - Heres a table of AOV on some popular focal lengths

I use the Android app "Hyperfocal Pro" for angle of view and DoF calculations, and it works well. "Hyperfocal" for iOS looks to be an entirely different product, however, and not very well received.

Usually, my kit is 28/50. 28/40 works, but yes - not too distinguishable in some situations. With the Ultron 28mm, sometimes I have to check the exif or I think it's the 40. Other times its obvious. I may pick up a 24mm at some point, but I'm going to be patiently awaiting the release of the CV 21/3.5 E mount. 28/40 works, or just one or the other works, if I want to go minimal.

Very interesting guys. My only gripe with the lens is the FL. I like best the 32mm of the Rx1 and pentax 31 Ltd.

The photos feel close to a 50mm to me. Fred measured it and it’s really about 43.5mm.

Are you guys coupling it with a 28mm or 24mm?

Usual manufacturers release the diagonal measurement at infinity, so as long as we compare apples to apples, it should be fine.
Their numbers may vary from their listed focal length though as lenses have an approximate FL and that changes depending on distance due to breathing.

+1 regarding 28 going along with the 50 for me. If I am consider anything between 28-40, I would definitely just be sticking with one lens and working it out.

If I have had to pack a wide to go with the 40, I've been throwing in the Sigma 20 Art or just grabbing the Fuji with 24mm equivalent for a two body setup. Those two actually provide and feel like a much bigger departure from 40 than the 28.

I can see myself carrying the 28 and 40 at times so that when I need AF I can switch to the 28.

Great point for those with the FE mount 40. I'm just one of those weird dudes using the M mount version with AF

There other sites, apps or even your lens' specifications to use as reference.

I do the same, but Batis 25 and CV 40. A great 2 lens walkaround setup. The Batis (or cheaper Sony) 85 makes it a supreme 3 lens kit that is small and fairly light.

I am pretty curious to see the CV 50 1.2...if it's magical like the 40 1.2, I'll sell swap my 40 1.2 and be happier for it. I can go back to my 21-28/35-50 set up.

Thanks for the calculation answer Fred.

Am I the only one using the m-mount 40 on e-mount without AF?

I haven’t received my cv40 yet (arrives tomorrow) but I’m wondering if 28/40/55 would work but concerned the 55 is too close. That would be a really small 3 lens setup. Might have to switch my batis 85 for the 55 if it is too close

Yes, along with EXIF data, for the E-mount version of the lens (not the M-mount).

Actually talked to Steve Gandy at Camera Quest today. He said anyone that ordered the CV40 as of yesterday would be getting the lens shipped this week. Looks like I might have lucked out ordering it on April 3rd. He said as of yesterday he was sold out again.
