Just read Art's comments about the 1DXII. It looks like it took some time for Canon to replace his camera...

As for his use of 5DIV's, he said long time ago that the older he gets, he prefers smaller cameras and smaller/lighter lenses. Also, he is well known on favoring the newest bodies from Canon. Not to long ago, he was praising 5DsR, 7DII etc. Why? He has large following and a lot of people view him as a "grandfather" of bird photography. In their mind, whatever he says, is true. Therefore he sees large market and easy way of making

You really are the king of dismissal, aren't you? You dismissed the oil splatter, and you dismissed the sensor lines as possibly being a result of DPAF. Now you're dismissing Arthur for his guides and the way he makes money (ad hominem, much?)

I have exchanged dozens of e-mails with Arthur; I was cc'd into practically all his correspondence with Canon over these 1DX Mark II issues, and I spoke on the phone to the exact Canon representative he was dealing with at CanonUSA, and I forwarded all the RAWs I've collected to her. I saw through e-mails and heard on the phone Canon's dismissal of his issues. Now Canon has caved somewhat, which in large part, I believe, is because of the growing dissatisfaction that is being publicly disseminated about this camera and the fear of future blog posts from him.

I like how in order to disparage Arthur's credibility you turn to how he makes his money. So what if there is more information on AF tuning on this forum? Dozens and dozens of photographers sell guides on either fine tuning their equipment or proper photographic technique. There is free information everywhere in today's world. People pay for information to get it in a well laid out fashion and from a trusted source. There's absolutely nothing wrong wth that. It's why Jared Polin, Chelsea & Tony Northrup, and Michael the Maven, to name just a few, have large followers too. People pay for Arthur's expertise in his field. You can get your information elsewhere for free if you so choose. I'd also like to point out he posts valuable information for free in his educational blog posts, which he has been doing now for several hundred days in a row.

Selling guides and making recommendations on equipment does not delegitimize any of the problems Arthur experienced with his 1DX Mark II camera whatsoever. His 5% fee for helping members sell their gear is also fair, in my opinion. Try taking your gear to any camera store and see what they take off the top. If you want to sell your gear quickly and have maximum visibility, you pay. It's as simple and as fair as that.

As far as his camera recommendations go, well guess what? Usually the newest equipment is the best and most refined. The 5DIV is the only full frame camera Canon offers with any sort of buffer, other than the 1DX Mark II. It also has the best dynamic range of any Canon camera to date, and shares the new 1DX Mark II autofocusing system. It is easy to see why he switched from the 5DsR to the 5DIV for bird photography. Again, your arguments are to disparage and not based in reality:

Arthur Morris:
I went to using my two 5D Mark IV bodies almost exclusively, at least for a while. But tempted by that blazing frame rate, I used my 1D X II a bit in January. Fairly soon I noticed more sensor dust than expected and worse yet, some additional oil spatter. So I sent the camera back to Canon for another cleaning–not sure if that was cleaning #2 or #3 but I think that it was #3. When I got the camera back I clicked off a few frames and then did an f/22 sensor dust test and saved the results
...Show more

I have no doubt Artie would still be using his 1DX Mark II if it were not for its glaring issues. The fact Arthur had to wait from April to December to get anywhere at all with Canon is illustrative of Canon's unscrupulous behaviour.

How people can defend this kind of behaviour from Canon, especially regarding tools you paid for out of your own pockets and use for work, is beyond me. Anyone looking at RAWs taken from the 1DX Mark II model will see they all have excessive oil splatter, especially in the top-left of the frame. At this point people saying this is a none-issue are defending the indefensible.

You are taking it too personally, my friend. I'm not trying to "disparage Arthur's credibility" at all. My comments on how he makes money were made only on his camera choice not the oil splatter issue. I've read this multiple times about him, and over the years its been proven true. With every new Canon camera release, there is Art pushing it. First, to help Canon to sell it and to keep good relations with them, second to write another guide and make money. Don't you think he could easily write a guide for 1DXII, 5DIV, 7DII combined and sell it as one? Their AF setup is almost the same. Others did it, why can't he? Because he is trying to take as much $$ from his "blind" followers as he can! Have you ever purchased a guide from him? If so, which one?

Don't take my word for it. Just see what is going to happen next time Canon releases a new camera. Either 7DIII or 5DsR II. Just watch and take notes...

Does he provide help and knowledge to others? Absolutely. But I hate to see when people are being taken advantage off! Especially, novice photographers. When I find more time, I will look for his post where he specifically wrote that he is being tired of larger/heavier cameras (1DX) and prefers 5D like bodies. His reasoning of shooting 5D series and not the oil splatter issue.

But please, do not try to convince me that it is OK for him to charge 5% fee. For me it is clear rip off and taking advantage of people that do not know better. I would rather pay this commission here on FM, as this forum gives people more information than he does. If you are so OK with giving your money anyway, why aren't you supporting Fred Miranda? You are here more often than on Art's website as of late. I don't see you requesting RAW files from Art's followers. You are gaining more from this forum than from him. Come on, support Fred! https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/upload-sell.php

I didn't dismiss the oil splatter as a non-existent. I simply wasn't aware of it and even though I know about it now, it still doesn't bother me. It takes me quicker to clean the sensor than to write a reply to your comments And if you read through this thread once again, you will find that most of the people don't have an issue with it either. Not to mention the "line issue". I only suggested that it may be caused by DPAF. Simple suggestion where to look for it, not to dismiss anything. Geez... To me, it is starting to look like you either don't read responses thoroughly with your emotions taking over or you are trying to fit everyones mind to your way of thinking. Ain't gonna work...

I'm not defending Canon at all. If there is an issue or not, it is not the biggest issue in my life. If I see a dust/oil spec in my shots, I simply clean the sensor. I believe same is true for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, other users of 1DX and 1DXII cameras.
If you are so dissatisfied with Canon, why don't you sell your 1DXII and shoot with 5DIV or simply switch to Nikon?

Kosin:
I am not trying to “disparage Arthur’s credibility at all”

No? Then why even bother bringing up his guides and the information he sells. I simply said he would be selling his 1DX Mark II and using his 5DIVs exclusively. That spawned your little rant on his “greed”. Why bring up his “greed” at all if you’re not trying to discredit his motives?

Furthermore, why did you make this comment:

Kosin:
As for his use of 5DIV’s, I bet if he was shooting more action, aka birds in flight, his camera choice would be different. For shots of gulls on the parking lot, 5DIV does well indeed

You are literally trying to mock the man here. Nice…

Kosin:
I will look for his post where he specifically wrote that he is being tired of larger/heavier cameras (1DX) and prefers 5D like bodies. His reasoning of shooting 5D series and not the oil splatter issue.

As my quote from him in my previous post shows, he was still willing to use his 1DX Mark II along side his other cameras. And, according to my e-mail correspondence he stopped using it because of oil, had Canon change the sensor under warranty, and still had the camera exhibit oil splatter. Artie was then fighting with Canon over a replacement camera ever since, while all Canon would offer is more free cleanings.

Kosin:
With every new Canon camera release, there is Art pushing it.

You are stating the obvious. In fact, your comment is trite and beyond ignorant.

Why does this offend you? Like practically every professional photographer, or gear enthusiast, out there that likes to upgrade/compare to last generation tech, it offends you that Arthur pushes the latest technology to his readership? My God, man. I guess Randy Rouse is a hack then too in your eyes, am I right? Same goes for Michael the Maven, Tony Northrup, Jared Polin, Toby, Matt Granger, Scott Kelby, etc. All greedy, I guess. Right? They all sell something and they all push and review new gear, so obviously their motivated by greed and taking advantage of people!!!

Arthur makes no bones about what he does. As you pointed out, he acquires new gear as it’s released and tries it out. He’s in a great position to do that and many people appreciate his input. Now that Canon, for example, hasn’t put anything new out for awhile, Arthur repeatedly states (practically under every photo he posts) that the 5DIV is his favourite bird camera. If you read his responses to the comments his readers leave, he gives very detailed breakdowns on each camera model and what may suit them the best.

Kosin:
Don’t take my word for it. Just see what is going to happen next time Canon releases a new camera. Either 7DIII or 5DsR II. Just watch and take notes…

Yeah, I’ll watch and take notes as he reviews those cameras, just like practically every other professional photographer who wants the newest and best equipment for the job, or the YouTuber or online reviewer that has a stake in the photography community. Again, duh!!

Kosin:
…I hate to see when people are being taken advantage off!

Funny, me too! That’s why I am trying to hold Canon to account for releasing a shoddy product, knowing about its issues, and refusing to do anything about it.

You don’t seem to care about that though, because the issues don’t personally bother you. For some reason, however, Arthur Morris making guides and selling them upsets you more.

Let me ask you something — which venture is more innocent and honest: Arthur selling guides, OR a big company like Canon knowing they have a problem with one of their products, screwing their customers around when they bring the problem to their attention, all while continuing to sell the faulty product without blinking an eye?

At the end of the day, what’s your purpose pal? You’re telling me that I am taking things too personally, yet you mock and disparage someone’s credibility when they clearly have way more skill and notoriety than you, and you dismiss peoples’ troubles by stating that, even though you now know about the issues, “they still don’t bother” you because you can clean your own sensor. You’re obviously better at owning professional equipment than us, since you can do the maintenance yourself regularly and better than the Canon technicians without worry. So, why keep coming back? This seems more like a personal thing for you.

Kosin:
Ain’t gonna work

Frankly, I’ve already wasted too much time on you to respond to every one of your off-topic points or passive aggressive japes, especially the ones made to bait me into a juvenile argument over the purchase of guides and selling fees. You’ve contributed nothing of substance, and I doubt anything would “work” on you, to be honest. Glad you’re happy with the 1DX Mark II. Despite your claim regarding this thread, many people are not happy and genuinely want a fix.

The fact that they usually are is why I bought a 1DX.

Hey now, come on...

If you are ok with spending €15 on pec pads every 3000 shots, fine.
And if you are ok with cleaning yourself that is also fine. Tbh, if my sensor never got scratched costing over €1800 i might have been a lot milder on the subject.

But, that isn't the case. Then finding out you are not alone with this and hear of similar experiences from others, you know you are not the unfortunate. Now having tested so many copies of this camera i just know that this is not just an isolated problem. It is widespread.

And sure, me and i bet others have looked to switch to Nikon as well. I have spoken with my local retailer about it, but it'll cost me way to much money.
So here we are, a couple of dissatisfied owners of what should be an excellent camera, which it still is in many ways. Just a few things i find unacceptable, which are the escessive oil, sensor lines on 90% of the bodies i had, and last but not least, how Canon responds to this (until now).

If you can respect that feeling, we're fine.
Merry christmas!

Oh picky. Every single 1DX Mark II I have seen files so far - now 30 - have the issue. Is 30 “all”? No, but it sure gives a strong indication of what to expect.

Please post a file from your camera. Let’s see

Until now? So what has Canon done? Neither of those are FW fixes so this will be a major recall of all 1DX2's for a sensor and shutter/mirror assembly redesign and replacement. Essentially a complete new camera. I'm not holding my breath.

The fact that Art Morris, a photographer with a fair amount of notoriety, is simply getting another 1DX2 means that Canon has blown it off.

I understand having a Canon investment and not wanting to lose it but at some point if the camera is not doing what you want then what good is it doing sitting on the shelf. Perhaps look to either a Sony A7RIII or A9 with adapter so you can at least keep you're Canon lenses.

Funny that you are picking only the parts that are comfortable for you to answer. I see that I struck a chord in the Art’s biggest believer Sorry about that. I just wanted to warn others to not to take his recommendations in 100% as his motives are simply driven by making money.

Contrary to you, I have personal experience with Art's guides/ebooks. I also happened to shoot (multiple times at multiple locations) at the same time when he run his workshops. I spoke with some of his workshop participants and know how some of them feel about him. I don’t care if you believe me or not. I just wanted you, and others, to be aware of it. Simple as that!

Coming back to the dust issue. Did you know that every camera comes with some dust already on the sensor? Did you know that each Canon lens has imperfections in the glass itself. Here is an exercise you can do quickly at your leisure. Point the lens to the light and look through it (both lens caps off with no camera attached). You will see many black dots in there. And it doesn’t matter if the lens cost $100 or $12,999. All have it. In some extensive postprocessing these imperfection may also show up on the image. Are you going to complain to Canon about it too? Good luck!

I think, I was the only one here who asked that before complaining to Canon "we" should find out first if these black dots are dust or oil particles. I'm able to clean most of them with a GelStick. If it was oil, I don't think that GelStick would pick it up. Like I said it before at some point, there would be no more oil/lubricant left so the oil spots would stop showing up. Let's say after 500,000 shutter actuations. This wasn't reported yet. If it is dust, is it a typical dust or is it a dust from parts wearing off? - but of course this was to much of a hassle for you to explain as it was easier to attack everyone else that happened to disagree with you...

In summary, thanks for bring this issue up. Many, myself included, weren't aware of the extend of it. Mostly because of the small aperture and heavy processing it requires - something that isn't a norm for most of the people. I'm keeping an eye on my camera and will report back if I see any changes.

Also, if sensors were so easy to damage during cleaning, like you are implying, I would think that camera manufactures would prohibit it and never have this function in the menu. I understand that accidental damage of a sensor happens. Car accidents happen as well. Should we all stop driving?

As for the "line issue", please show me a picture where and how exactly it will affect your final output? Will those lines show up in the print? I know that dust/oil spots can clearly ruin the print/final image but those lines? From all the examples you guys have shown so far, I have a hard time believing that anyone will notice these lines, if there are any at all...

And as I explained to you, if you even cared to read, that it's oil, not dust.

As I also pointed out, again, if you cared to actually read, even if it were just dust (which it's not) do you not think it's strange that dust is accumulating in that quantity primarily in one location of the sensor? It would, by pure and simple logic, take a part wearing in camera to create particles to that extent, which also isn't good!

Either way, the particles to this degree should not happen!

I am so happy that the sensor crud doesn't bother you. I think it's laughable at this point that you are making a bigger deal about Arthur's guides than a shoddy product, while still claiming you want to protect people from nefarious motives!

!!!!!!
I brought up Arthur Morris for being one of the original Canon Explorers of Light and having the same problems as us with his 1DX Mark II. YOU brought up everything else under the sun to disparage his reputation and to take away from the topic at hand. If you have a problem with what Arthur Morris does, go start a thread about it and discuss it there. You have no idea how pathetic and petty you look, and the fact that you are trying to be condescending adds even further to it.

Just leave, dude. We have nothing more to say to each other.

Yes, you have good experiences with cleaning your sensor, like i said in numerous posts prior to this, i understand and respect anyones opinion on that. But once you had a bad experience with it, you'll be hesitant to clean another.
And if you had read my posts thoroughly you should have noticed that i don't even have a dehaze filter in LR, and i can easily discover the issues with minimal pp in certain circumstances.

Exactly, CPS does strongly advise me NOT to clean the sensor myself. (the CPS rep i spoke with scratched a sensor himself as well while cleaning) Also if you read the manual of the 1dx mark II there is a phrase mentioning to have your sensor cleaned by Canon.

If those lines show up on a screen, they will show up in a print as well, no doubt about that.
If you believe the earth is flat, fine... i couldn't care less. I know i have more knowledge on this matter than you, and if this happened to you you'd be singing another song.

I also wonder how many of the naysayers run to Canon first for a repair request when Canon finally decides to do something about it. Just like Nikon with the D600. Speaking of the D600. Would you have said the same to the owners of that camera as well when they complained about the oil issue? Hmm?

Oh and by the way, if you are no fan of Art and think he is biased. Maybe we can throw another award winning photographer into the mix. Please read here: https://m.facebook.com/david.pattyn.50/posts/1963109727262418?pnref=story
Also feel free to read the responses. Behind the scenes there are more pro's investigated that don't want to go public on it.

Given your desires with the two "issues" the only solution would be a total redesign of the sensor and mirror/shutter assembly and a massive recall. It's not going to happen. Those kind of resources have already gone into the 1DX3 and there is no guarantee that Canon even views your "issues" as a defect so the mk3 may have the same design.

As I said multiple times in this thread, 1D's have been gathering crap on their sensors for a long time (2004 in my experience) so Canon clearly doesn't see it as a priority to fix.

For the line issue there is a solution already, assemble it exactly like they did with the copies that don't have it. And yes i have read your responses that it happened with the 1dx as well. But that camera had a different sensor coating and was way easier to clean like me and chimping said multiple times.

If i am instructed on how to safely clean my sensor without damaging it and Canon provides free cleaning tools to compensate for their design flaw i might say i am sort of satisfied.

And ain't gonna happen doesn't play in my book. If we all had that additude we would live in a different world. I might get the same answer in the end, at least i tried to stand up for my rights as a customer to get a 'proper working' device.

David Pattyn's images are shocking.

I wonder how much this will eventually cost Canon?
