Thanks for the examples and crops. Stopped-down infinity looking great, especially the corners at f4. Pretty curious to see some a7rii raw examples.

We should keep in mind that these crops are from the A9 (24MP). The A7RII sensor could be a little less forgiving. We could get even better center with the corners not following it that close.

I added some lunch break snapshots to the same album. Including many wide open shots and a few at F4. They are again OOC JPEGs with my A9 and EXIF is available. The new ones appear after the street overpass shots.

Would be great if you could post some shots with defocused point light sources later (focus distance 1-2m).

Something like this:
https://phillipreeve.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/ef_200mm_1.8_l_bokeh_1.8.jpg

I am really interested to see what shape, outlining and onion rings look like.
Tempted to reevaluate the Zhong Yi 50mm 0.95 because of this lens...

OK, I'll try to find some suitable targets like that after work today.

Just put in my order, hopefully getting it on Monday/Tuesday next week. From Juha's test shots, the lens does look good (except for a bit of CA).

Will do Fred! The big question for me at some level is something we won't know: assuming it is decently centrally sharp by f2 (but maybe only just usable at 1.4 and below) could they have made as good a lens at f2 if they just made an f2 lens? In which case it might have been even smaller, with not much or any loss is serious usability.

you people are the reason i can't find a modern lens i like. for a given size/number of elements/price point you can always get better performance going slower.

it looks just fine to me at f/1.2 sharpness wise (a little less would be ok). i still need to see more pics to decide how much i like it, but it looks promising.

Guys, I don't have access to a PC right now. How do you rate the midzone performance in Juha's aperture series? Is there a midzone dip? The ZM 1.4/35 and the FE 1.4/35 suffer from that.

I added some shots from this evening to the album (they can be seen at the end), tried to get some of those defocused point light sources that BastianK wanted to see as well as other low light / city light shots.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/WysUezLe4EC3KwG52

There are some onion rings on those defocused point light source shots though they are not offensive to me, less than what my old Nokton 35/1.2 v1 used to have. I think flare resistance is good for low light city shooting and sunstars are typical Voigtländer style which I like. F2.8 will work nicely for low light city scenes where good sharpness across the frame is wanted without going too high with iso.

1st pair of defocused point light sources is from a much further distance than 1-2m (shooting across the street). Last 2 pairs are from close distance with small light sources that were at adequate distance from each other. Those lights were not very colorful.

As for Jannik's question I can't really comment much as I'm not really noticing the midzone dip with my FE 35/1.4 and can't see any with the Nokton 40/1.2...

BastianK,
What's your opinion on the example images so far?
I think they're better than what I expected.

My new relatively compact & complete kit goal (no zooms ever):

10mm Voigtländer Heliar-Hyper Wide f/5.6
21mm Loxia f/2.8
40mm Voigtländer Nokton f/1.2
65mm Voigtländer Macro Apo-Lanthar f/2
85mm Sony fe f/1.8
135mm Zeiss Batis f/2.8

+ a modest pile of legacy Minolta and FD glass and the 90mm Sony fe Macro G OSS.

2 bodies with the 40mm Voigtländer welded to one of them.

Think a 28mm should be added? 😎

I love the "sun stars" at f2.8 in the lowlight street shot (Image 1765).
Exactly what I was looking for in this lens 👍

I'm so happy with my current selection of lenses:
Voigtlander FE 15mm f4.5
Voigtlander FE 40mm f1.2
Sony FE 100mm f2.8 STF

For panoramic tour photography:
Sigma 8mm

and for Video/Travel use:
Sony FE 24-240mm f3.5-6.3

All I need 😊

That 100mm STF is awesome. Was thinking about that also.

I'm actually reluctantly going to list my very good copy of the 15mm/4.5 today to fund this lens. Just had a baby so focusing on portraits.

This is still a tough one to answer.

So far I can't judge if there is a midzone dip, that I have unfortunately also seen in many (not only 35mm) lens designs lately.

Onion rings look better than expected so far. Much less pronounced compared to the likes of FE 35mm 1.4 ZA or FE 55mm 1.8 ZA.
But also worse compared to VM 35mm 1.7 or Loxia 21mm 2.8 (both only have an aspehrical rear lens, not front lens).

Background bokeh looks very smooth in general, but the transition zone in the shot with the bottles does not look as good to me. More like in the old days and definetly not what I was hoping for.

Mechanical vignetting is strong, as was to be expected. Cat's eyes are very much pronounced, but compared to the Zhong Yi 50mm 0.95 at least not lemon-shaped :-)

So far this looks like a really versatile, interesting and tempting lens.
If I was still using one of the 4 native 35mm options I would have already preordered one for sure.

What I am not sure about is how it stacks up against my VM35mm 1.7 + 5m PCX filter.
The latter is a really competent small package, maybe better in some areas than the 1.2/40 (coma? corner sharpness? loCA correction?), worse in some others (speed, electronic contacts).
This is also the reason I haven't preordered one (yet?).

But I am a bit nitpicking here, for anyone who does not want to mess around with those filters and/or wants a small, native and versatile lens in this focal length segment it looks like a winner so far.

Some field curvature wide-open? Check out image "DSC01615.JPG".
It was focused on the foreground and although the center background looks blurred, the top right edge in the back sharpens up quite a bit.

Onion-ring is there but not too apparent. I'd say a little worse compared to CV 65/2 APO.

For me it has to be a clear winner over my VC 35 1.7 and the PCX filter

I ordered a VC 28 F2 Ultron this morning and I’ll mount the correct PCX for it when we find out what that is but I would like the 40 for gapping reasons and I would like the Exif data. Having the 28 and 35 without Exif is going confuse the heck out of me. Lol

Plus my Laowa 15 no Exif.

I think also a big concern is at F2 will it be as sharp on center as my Cv 35 is at 1.7

Honestly having a 1.2 lens does not buy me much in the scheme of things but this 40 I would like too see kick some butt.
