Anyone still using this set-up? I sold my 12-24/4 last year but remember this was a great way to use this lens with regular 77mm filters.

if you still have your modded 77mm filters for this lens, i'd happily buy them

edit: decided to make one out of a 5 stop, and I can get it to work but it requires going to 16mm which isn't too bad I guess

Hello all, we, (MediaBite Group) represent STC Optical & Chemical for PR and trade comms across Europe and were made aware of this forum thread by a mutual connection.

We feel it's important for us to post here in the hope to clear a few things up regarding the brand's new and innovative clip-in filters. We have brought the comments in this thread to STC’s attention and it is clear that the clip-filters that have been discussed are older prototypes/pre-production samples and are not finished/production models.

One of the main advantages of STC's Clip-Filters is to benefit from significant savings from not having to purchase multiple circular filters. Instead, using a single Clip Filter for EVERY Lens.

Other benefits include the ability to use filtration on certain lenses that don't easily allow for filter mounting, i.e. fish-eye lenses.

We’re currently in the process of creating some short videos outlining the use of the clip filters as well as how to install and remove the filters for the EU market, but there are some from Taiwan that we can share. Take a look at this link to see just how easy, (and safe) they are to use:

&feature=youtu.be

We will keep an eye on the forum thread if any other concerns with STC products, (they also make some great camera accessories) are raised, we will be sure to address them.

Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] for any individual conversations and please be sure to follow STC's social channels to be the first to see new videos, reviews (the STC ND Clip In Filter recently saw a 4.5/5 from Andy Westlake in Amateur Photographer magazine) and more.

I tried an alternative of Fred's method this morning, where instead of placing self-adhesive felt on the filter, I put it along the inside rim of the hood of the lens itself. This has the advantage that you can use any 77mm filter you like without modifying it (and share the same filters with other lenses).

I tried it with my Nisi ND64 CPL filter (dark polarizer), which is pretty much the only filter I carry now and is not a thin filter, and get perfect results between 16 and 24 mm. At 15mm there is ever the slightest amount vignetting in the extreme corner, and the filter touches the lens at about 14 mm. Very happy with this solution when I don't need wider than 15 or 16mm, beyond which I'll use my large filter setup instead. I'm, guessing with thin filters, 15mm will also be completely vignette free.

** edit ** After a bit more adjustment, I can now get 15mm vignette-free, although the filter now touches the lens at about 14.5mm. Anecdotally, I think I may even like the color from the 12-24 better when this filter is added.

Let's say that if there is a 100mm magnetic filter holder in the works for the FE 12-24, abit very likely to only work from the 14-24mm range, how many of you will be interested in getting it?

That is a great idea for those sharing filters with other lenses. The only downside of the "77mm method" is that it does not work at 12mm.

I've tried several times to buy an extra FE 12-24mm hood but can never find one.
I'd like a 'sacrifical' hood to experiment with.

Not super cheap, but hey, at least it isn't $1500.

It would be cool if you could unscrew the fixed petal hood and screw on filters.

The 77mm filter trick works great though.

love this!!! does anyone use a similar setup for 12-24?

Fred Miranda wrote:
There is a workaround to using huge 150mm filters with the new FE 12-24/4 G.
So far I've only tried it with my Breakthrough 77mm 6-stop ND filter, but it's possible it will also work with polarizers. There is no vignetting and no light leak from 14mm until 24mm making this new ultra wide much more versatile now.

At 12mm, the front element is at its longest extension and won't work with this set-up. Actually it should be avoided since the front element will actually touch the filter. So be warned not to pass 14mm.
(13mm is actually fine but

I imagine with the latest clip in filters from Kase and the like, there is less need for these solutions.

The original 77mm filter mod thread is about 5 years old. Given the 3D printing has become more common since that, has anyone tried to create an adapter for a bigger standard circular filter?
