1/4" is about 6mm. I bought a roll of 1,5mm thick felt tape with 8mm instead of 6mm width now because i thought this is necessary because of my thicker ND Filter.
But i'm afraid that i can't get a good result from 14-24 with this. Maybe more like 17-24 because the filter has 2mm more space to the lens than with your solution!?

just trim it down. I use gaffers tape and I simply stacked more and more until it was snug, and it works fine. it's not an exact science, you just wing it a little and adjust.

Hi, I found this wonderful topic, I'm trying with my Hoya 77mm nd1000 and I can't reach 14mm like all of you guys, only 16mm. Do you know maybe why? Is it not so large like yours? Is there something I could do to modify the filter? It's really hard to get a BREAKTHROUGH in Europe.

Anyone still using this set-up? I sold my 12-24/4 last year but remember this was a great way to use this lens with regular 77mm filters.
Hi Fred, I still use this method. I did buy an additional, thin and cheap 77mm filter. I broke this lens to use the 77mm ring. It gave me 2 things;
1. More surface area to apply the flocking tape on the outer edge.
2. Placed the actual glass of the ND/CPL a little bit farther away from the lens’ glass, allowing for me to get to around 13mm without any contact between lens and filter.

Sounds great. Can you show some pictures of your mod?

Sounds like a nice trick

I wouldn’t call it much of a mod (I’m not that mechanically inclined ), but here you go. The extra ring really helps with the thin CPL because it makes it more accessible and easier to rotate.
unless you chop the hood, I'm certain it wont work with 100mm filters, at least not with the full focal range. 100mm filters wont cover enough from what I recall.

Just put this together and it worked great. Bought the cheapest 77mm filter I could find, knocked out the glass, and put a 3/8" x 1.5mm felt wrap around it. Lined up the felt just about with the outer edge of the filter and folded the excess inward. Attached a Breakthrough X4 ND to it and pushed into the 12-14mm as far as it would go. Starting to get vignetting on one corner at 16mm, with some tweaking may be able to improve that. Lens can zoom the full range without hitting the filter.

Why not wrap the felt on the filter itself and push it down? It's likely more vignetting will be seen with 2 filters (the way you described)

I wanted to prioritize the lens never hitting the filter over minimizing vignetting. Seemed too easy to forget and damage something when zooming wide.
It also made it easy to swap the ND onto other lenses, which wasn't possible with the felt on there. If I made the felt only as wide as the ND filter it probably would have worked, but with the wider felt hanging off the back it wasn't going.
