Now that's a refreshingly different point I've heard in a while made regarding the benefit of more DR for lifting shadows.

I once had to shoot a wedding at night outdoors. No moon and nothing to bounce my flashes off. It kept me up at night working out the technicals, including two visits to the venue for experiments, and this was only for a friend rather than a paid gig. I set up an array of remote flashes around the ceremony and reception. I shot with a pair of D800's and leaned heavily on their DR for some of the shots.

I remember when the D700 came out (bought one) and it touted how much the DR / low noise had improved. I shot some night concert venue ... wasn't near the boom I was expecting over my (then) 5D & 1D2 N. I'm sure my PP skills to coax the most out of it were lacking back then, but to me, it was marginal improvement to my lack of light ... not the earth shattering, game changing, shoot-in-the-dark improvement that the marketing would have had me believe.

I sold it.

Point being ... there's really no really good answer to a lack of light ... only less and lesser acceptable ones.

The D700 was a modest improvement in DR, mostly in a quantitative sense as the shadows didn't have much objectionable banding in them. The D800 was a significant leap forward with almost 2EV more DR than the D700 and an even better quantitative improvement.

D700 wasn't all that great given its low pixel count.

Also the dynamic range quickly equals out if you push iso

Geoff,

I must have missed it in the video ... was there any indication given to the original exposure of the files and / or the amount of push being given? Also, there seemed to be a difference in color rendering ... most notably in the red / orange stripe ... but also in the bag color (push the sat on a screen shot) giving to WB / color fidelity. They also seem to have been raised to different tonal values (back to exposure exif ).

Seems to be that all the images "testing" for DR have a common theme of backlighting going for them. Wondering if sidelighting of similar dynamic range would yield different results, i.e. akin to how some lenses are prone to veiling flare ... I'm wondering if it's just not well suited for strongly backlit situations for reason(s)

Well I'm gobsmacked if the DR as tested is indicative of the final product. Can't believe Canon would gimp a camera with antiquated sensor tech in 2017, given they have even used new tech in 80D/77D etc. So glad I needed the AF abilities of the 5D4 and didn't wait around for the 6DII.

With A7III and D760 as likely competitors in the next 3-6 months could be tough for 6DII, given is also misses out on 4K. A7III to get A9 AF, so should be a pretty good camera after 3 generations with all the other improvements like battery, grip, possibly stacked sensor.

Well production firmware is 1.02 same as preview cameras and same DR as original 6D and 5DIII. DPP4 already updated and ACR has a new update for 6DII.

Some early production camera files are posted at DPR. These are just hand held snapshots done in a rush.

I've already managed to reprocess Rob's landscape raw files (ISO 100) and I must admit that 6D is damn a good camera yet 6DII is not worse at least
Also I noticed that 6D raw file exhibits more details in shadows after push for +2EV/+100% shadow recovery. But 6D II has finer grain.

Here's the links to the pics (so far), so you can skip the thread dialogue along the way.

The one comment that caught my attention was about the fineness of the noise in the shadows (moreover than an expansion of DR) being of notable difference.

In that regard, the perspective that it is the SAME as the old technology seems to be a different thing from exhibiting the same amount of DR as the 6D. Kinda sounds similar to my experience with the D700, not necessarily MORE, but rather MORE REFINED.

Early returns obviously and confirmation of same firmware ... will be interesting to see how new software (LR, etc.) plays with it. That, and how it plays with my workflow. I suspect it will warrant some learning / revision to bring it to its fruition. Soon is getting closer.

While many are hinging on the DR response, I'm probably more interested in color response and tonality aspects of its IQ. Curious to see also how "faithful" it is to its rated ISO sensitivity. There remains yet, much to be learned.

B&H still shows mine as "processing".

Well, after all my earlier talk of sticking with the 6D2 because of the flippy screen, I decided to pull the plug on my preorder and snag a refurbished 5DIV from Canon this morning. It was a really hard call, and time will tell if I made the right choice. Thankfully I can always sell the 5D and move back to the 6D2 if I find the lack of flip screen is a huge deal breaker. Seeing The Camera Store's live feed talking about it was the nail in the coffin for me. I've been in spots where I've had similarly difficult shots and where the extra shadow detail would have been really helpful in trying to tweak the final exposure. I'm still so bummed I can't have the top-of-the-line dynamic range PLUS a flippy screen, but I guess I'll have to break the knees for a few more years until Canon get's their act together

I still think the 6D2 is a fine camera, and the dynamic range blowback isn't going to kill it's sales. From a business perspective it makes complete sense to me, and I can imagine they'll still have a successful cycle with this model without cannibalizing the 5DIV. The strategy worked on me, so it's probably working on others too.

The 6d2 screen and I guess magic lantern would be great

Agree....the 6D2 with Magic Lantern could be a great combo, although I suspect it will be a while before you see a port for the 6D2.

I would highly suggest a used 5DIII. It will save you money and it's a much better value with dual slots, build, shutter speed, better shutter, 100% viewfinder, better AF array, etc...

Find a "like new" used body and enjoy.
