p.42 #1 · Official: Canon Announces the EOS 6D Mark II
Wow, 41 pages on the 6DII only to find out there's no improvement in sensor tech? For those who did not read all of this, what is Canon's target market for this body?
It's not the video market
It's not the "FF upgrade" market because very few would buy a new FF body without advancements in IQ.
It's not the first time camera buyer market because most would be attracted to Sony or similar
That leaves those who are stuck in Canon's ecosystem and wanting their their first Canon full frame? I would just buy a used 6D or 5DIII. At $1500 or less, a used 5DIII is Canon's best FF value right now.
This is getting very interesting. It seems Canon has nowhere to go except for slight improvements in AF and FPS.

It should be the same market as the 6D II. 26 MP compared to 20 MP offers a substantial increase in resolution and finer noise pattern if nothing else.

Well, pre-announcement the only criticisms of the 6D were its AF coverage and video quality. Image quality cam way down the list. Now that the main points have been covered, it seem the image quality is not good enough after all.
Do you really know what you are talking about?

Really? Care to support that with any facts?

You mean the 6D which has inferior (and much criticised AF system) and the 5D3 which is now 5 years old and a lot of people prefer the newest model?
As for being 'stuck in the Canon ecosystem' - I like their ecosystem, there is no 'stuck 'about it. I like their support programs (good luck with Sony on that one). I like their lens range (cheaper than Canon, and Sony has zip in the long primes)
I am not sure if you have just raided these (and other ) bulletin boards for any criticism you can find without actually understanding what Canon customers deem important.

This is definitely a head scratcher and disappointing. I am an amateur who has a 6D and 80D and was planning on upgrading the former to the 6D2 assuming it was going to be a 80D with a 5D4-like sensor. The initial specs seemed to support that but I decided to hold off until the first reviews were out and I'm glad I did. I will likely hold off now until the price goes down to ~1500 or just spend my money on the rumored 85L f/1.4L.
The optimistic side of me thought of something interesting today that might be worth an entertaining discussion. What if the 6D2 is actually intended to be a full frame version of the 77D and there will be a future body to be the 80D equivalent? Instead of feature differentiation, the difference would be in sensor? That might explain the slightly cheaper price of the 6D2 too.

I think people are more interested in DR improvements, dual slots, 4K, etc than a slight bump in MP. If someone can't get the job done with 20.2MP then I don't believe a 6MP bump is the solution. More like a 5DS I would say. I guess it's what one defines as a "substantial" increase. A used 5DIII for $500 less would do the job and give you dual slots.

What's the difference of buying a 5yr old 5DIII or a 6DII with 5yr old sensor tech? And you tell me, what do Canon customers deem important?
p.42 #7 · Official: Canon Announces the EOS 6D Mark II
The used market is really not the same. Most buyers want new, not used products. If the 6D II were more desirable, would the used 5D III bodies be thrown in the trash and not sold as used?

I can't see canon introducing yet another full frame slr just to add a better sensor.
Plenty of noise about a ff mirrorless but now I just expect an m5 with the 6d2 sensor in for near 2000 dollars.

The AF seems to be similar, with the 5D3 possibly having slightly larger point coverage. Ultimately, it seems to me that if you don't want the flippy screen or dual pixel AF video shooting, the 5D3 is probably the better choice.Of course i am waiting to see reviews before finalising my conclusion.

A buyer is someone looking for a tool...it doesn't have to be new. You say most buyers want used? Says who? Why do ebay, craigslist, and FM buy-sell exist then? Why wouldn't all used tools be thrown in the trash if most buyers want new? Most people I know buy used or wait for prices to drop to avoid paying the hefty premium at release.
I would bet "most buyers" would shop around and compare the value of a new vs. used tool, but that's just me. I personally have bought many more used bodies/lenses than new, but YMMV

While the comparison between the 5D3 and 6D2 (current evidence) is certainly one of merit for objective consideration ... the above statement (as it reads @ first time camera buyer) isn't the same as saying entry level FF camera buyer. I don't think the 6D / 6D2 / D610 (Nikon), etc. would ever be considered targeted toward truly first time camera buyers. That market predominantly ranges from P&S to bridge to crop bodies. The market for the likes of a 6D2 (etc.) is to pull from THAT pool of camera owners to the FF market for advancing enthusiasts who don't need the full gamut of 5 or 1 Series.
Actually, it was the market of DLSR crop users that clamored for the entry level FF camera in the first place, as the previous entry barrier / threshold to FF was the 5 Series was deemed cost prohibitive by many.
+1 @ looking for the tool / solution ... the tool that fits your bag, your hand and the work to be done. As a long time user of a vintage tool ... a used tool can be a mighty fine one indeed as long as it satisfies the those rudimentary requirements. One doesn't always need a new sawmill to prune branches. The saw for cuttin' down redwoods might not be needed for cuttin' down dogwoods.

5D III is an excellent choice, especially if better build, dual card slots, 1/8000 shutter, joy stick etc are important to you.
6D II has flippy screen, touch screen (very useful), DPAF etc. For some, these are really important.
In the IQ department 6D II is likely to have slight edge if shadow lifting is important. Main problem with shadow lifting with 5D III is banding. From the examples I saw here it appears that 6D II lacks banding. It may also have slightly better high ISO performance.
p.42 #13 · Official: Canon Announces the EOS 6D Mark II
6D2 (or 6D) will both have better sensors than 5D3. 5D3 shadows are banding and blotchy. But 1-2 stop lifts can be fine. The 5D3 does have a lot of other pros as mentioned above.

I was dead set to get the 6DII on release to replace my 6D but sadly it would fix none of my qualms with the 6D, namely the AF. I'm sick of focus and recompose, I dont want to do it anymore. I tried using the outer points on the 6D but it was so hit and miss I gave up. Then the 6DII comes along and the spread is not better, maybe even worse, and I would still be focus and recomposing to properly place shots where I want them. Then throw in no 4K, sensor is just a MP bump and nothing else, touch screen is nice but I dont care that much, bleh. Such a disappointment. At this point I knew I either had 2 choices, save for 5D Mk4, or leave.
I grabbed a used A7RII and a Metabones v5 instead and spent a few days customizing it to my liking and learning the system. I took my 15 month old to an indoor playscape and it was like a breath of fresh air shooting with it. I could put my focus point/cluster literally anywhere I wanted and it would pick up his face and lock on, and I didnt even have to use the EVF as the live view was so well done. Pixel peeping with my results today and the keeper rate is pretty exciting for me. I shot the entire afternoon on one battery (~180 shots) and had 57% remaining when I got home. Not too bad really! No more center point focus and recompose! FREEDOM (insert Mel Gibson screaming here)
