So, it happened.

I fell victim to severe GAS attack and swapped my trustworthy A7III for the A9.
Got a truly good deal on it as well which helped my decision making process.
I took it along with my FE85f18 to the volleyball game today to test it.
They say, indoor volleyball is one of the hardest disciplines to photograph as the light is always substandard, game is relatively fast and players are often obscured by the net confusing the AF system.

First impression is positive, electronic shutter is phenomenal shooting at 20fps helping to catch that magic moment when a ball meets a hand...
AF system was excellent as well, yet I was quite happy with my A7III performance shooting with Flexible Spot Medium mode before.
I noticed, that tracking worked well, but despite the AF tracking sensitivity set at 1 it often switched focus from one player to another nearby.
I was hoping for the eye-AF or at least face recognition to kick in more often, but it seldom did.
I guess I was too far and the ambient indoor lighting was too dim for it to work.
I managed to get consistent ISO value (I was on auto-ISO) between 2000 and 3200 with shutter speed of 800 fixed.

There will be another game on Friday and I will continue testing it, perhaps going back to the flexible spot medium setting to check whether my hit rate would improve.

I really like the EVF, compared to the A7III, it is much clearer and easier to see detail.
The whole camera in general seems a bit more sturdy, than the A7III.

In another 2 or 3 hours the Cranes will arrive at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in the Middle Rio Grande Valley.

I was outside setting up the telescope and one of the hawks fly by. We still have three in the neighborhood. I learned long ago to have a camera at hand for what if shots. So swung it around and nabbed him as he passed overhead...a bit late though.
The good news is that the a9+400DOii easily (clear blue sky/Zone focus) caught this one.

Very nice...personally I'd accept the 1/3 stop of light loss and use the 200-600/1.4TC over the DOII combo.

Thank you Canadian friend. No worries I'll be packing both for the trip.
I'm even taking the D500+500PF and 1.4TC (but don't tell any Sony folk that).
This is a trip where we can take the campervan and have lots of toys to play with
and while at the dam when I need a nap the heat will be on and the java flowing.

But on the serious side, your comment reflects your belief that the 200600+1.4 is just
as sharp (if not sharper) than the 400DOii+1.4TC.....that says a heck of a lot about what
Sony has brought to the wildlife table.

Oh, the new monopodgimbal from wimberly (another Steve Perry reco) arrived today...out is the Jobu Jr, in is the new monopodgimbal! So small and light AND when rigged the best handle I've ever seen for a camera rig.
