I took the a9 + FE100400GM + 2.0TC to Conowingo.
Really impressed with the possibilities.
It was a 'justification' trip. Just last year in the same area I shot the 1DXii + 500ISii and I wanted to see if my big move to Sony was justified. Luckily I had good light for the F11 imposed by the laws of physics. It really is amazing, no not the IQ or all those focus points, not even the fact that this zoom lens can accept a 2.0 teleconverter and yield decent results; what is amazing is that after three days of shooting my back wasn't aching and it didn't hurt to lift my arms!
If you know Conowingo you know the distant this shot was made from. I was sitting on the rocks by the fence adjacent to the parking area. This eagle was beside the point on the island. I think someone who is good a processing could be even better than my meager attempts.
Forgot the EXIF
Sony ILCE-9
FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS + 2X Teleconverter
ƒ/11.0 800.0 mm 1/2000 1250
I won't load up this thread with hundreds of eagle captures but I did get hundreds very much like this one and the above. Once I saw the IQ from the TC zoom combo I felt good enough for me (maybe not you and never took the 2.0TC off. This one also at 800mm.

Nice captures, Robert. I was there about 3 weeks ago but most of the actions were on the far side of the river, It was very very windy so I didn't stay long. May head back there again this weekend. I will bring my Nikon D500, Sigma 150-600 S, Nikon 500 f4 VR, Sony A7RII + 100-400 GM. I am really really interested in how the new A7RIII will do with the Sigma 150-600mm, it they are good enough for eagles/ducks/herons in flight, I will sell my Nikon stuff in no time. I don't want to have two systems.
Thank you.
Yes two systems or more eventually will weight upon you.
I'm still using Olympus simply because I love the M1ii and I got keepers with it at the dam
as well...just not as easy.
Congratulations on your A7Riii. I was just reading DPR's review on it...seems just outstanding.
I'd add one but the Playmemories App situation has me perplexed. I'll give in eventually and hand
the Rii to the better half but all I ever used the Rii for was landscaping and I used and enjoyed the apps.
Concerning the DPR review I'll be curious to hear what you say about it's AF-C tracking ability.
Out time at the dam spanned three days last week. Perfect weather=cold but bright and clear, yet the eagles
gave us little activity and what little they did was far off. Still we enjoyed our visit and camped at Elk Neck S.P.
which surprisingly was still open. I think we just like Maryland....a few years ago I walked across the western
side on the A.T.

Sorry if my last post was confusing. I don't have the A7RIII yet, only two A7RIIs and a Nikon D500. I would like to sell one of the A7RIIs and the Nikon stuff, if the Canon mount Sigma 150-600 tracks well with the A7RIII at the long end.
I do have the Sony 1.4 TC, but most of my bird shootings are in early morning and late afternoon, so F8 (100-400 GM + 1.4 TC) or F11 (with the 2 x TC) will probably problematic for me. I hope the rumored Sony 200-600 will come.

You're making that 2,0xTC + GM 100-400 look very good! I may have to reconsider the 2,0x for my kit !
Thanks everyone, means a lot to me.
I think the a9 + 2.0TC + FE100-400GM could be fantastic in the hands of someone who knows more about this than I do. Like many I just get lucky every now and then. The rejoice is, and I keep repeating this, is that I can wield it. I just got to a point where I couldn't keep the big Canon rig on target...so I'm still in the game and for us older photographers that means a lot.

Good job Robert. Sell me your A9 and 100-400 now that you have your RX10 IV (and probably wind up with the A7RIII as well)
I'd be on the Riii if not for the app situation
I'd gift the Rii to Poof (the better-half) but something really turns me
off having to carry a separate intervalometer, just stings me.
On this trip three times I used apps on the Rii and actually enjoy them.
But hey, even the RX10iv doesn't have them and its a consumer camera!
As much as I love Sony and their constant innovation this app move was a giant
leap backwards as far as I'm concerned.
The 10iv has become the everyday everywhere carry. It displaced my Oly M1ii + PL100400. It has
a FuFa (fun factor) of 120% and constantly amazes me in what it can do....except accept apps
Here is a shot where I compared to one extremely similar to one I got last year with the 1DXii + 500ISii and to my eye any difference is insignificant. Kinda of a justification of my move, though I didn't have a big choice in the matter if I wanted to keep shooting.
I'm very happy with the IQ out of a superzoom (the FE100-400, is that classified as a superzoom?) with a 2.0 TC, what about you?

Looks like this combo worked very well for you Robert. Very encouraging.
John might have been me, I was the only Sony shooter there I think.
Long and fast lens eh, they will come, but I won't be able to lift or wield
But 400/4 (or 4.5) is long enough and fast enough for me if it will take a TC well.
That's just my reality, more power to those who can wield the 500's and up.

I only saw one Sony shooter as well. I’ve followed your postings in the Olympus thread. It’s nice to put a face to the forum name.
With what you can do with the 100-400mm, you don’t need a 500mm.
