It's not an a7iii or a7riii. Entirely new sensor to support the idea of speed. IMO, the fact that they did it in such a way to come close to a7rII IQ is very impressive. As MM said, DR and ISO performance is actually a bit worse on the A9, but for me, the trade off is a really good one.
Currently I have both the a7r2 and the a9 as I was going to spend a month deciding which to keep and which to sell. Ive already made that decision, and it took about 48 hours instead of a month. A9 all the way....Show more →
I did something similar, but mine was with an X-T2 to see if it would replace my a9. I wish that it could because the Fuji setup is much cheaper but it couldn't. So Fuji hits the B&S and a9 is staying with some primes and some slower f4 zooms.

That's funny.. I did the same thing back in the day with the A7 / A7R and the X-T1. Sold the X-T1. Great setup, liked the ergonomics of the Fuji and it had excellent IQ, I just couldn't get used to APS-C myself. For me there's something about FF. Never really been able to quantify or describe it, but FF resonates with me and APS-C just feels like something is missing.
F4 doesn't seem slow on the a9.
I'm with the triumvirate. A7Rii + a9 + a6500.
No current gas which is strange and a eerily good feeling
that the DSLR is in my history book.

^and I thought it was a known, a given, that Sony sacrificed a bit of DR and ISO performance to achieve these blistering speeds
To me A7Rii and a9 are apples and oranges.
Do you guys use spot metering tied to the AF point? I usually just use Matrix metering, but I see that Spot Metering Point, Focus Poiint Link is an option. And in that regard, I'm assuming that metering have to be set to Spot in order for spot metering point to work?

I still do.
I've not lost any mFT kit, and the she-boss also has M1ii---she uses 300/4 and I use PL 100-400 mainly but we plan to grow our Oly kit when the time comes (PL 50-200 as an example).
I've just reduced my EOS load to now 1 body and 5 or 6 lenses.
Once I saw what the a9 could do with my 400DOii I knew I no longer needed to suffer under the burden; now using the FEGM100400 I'm ecstatic at the weight savings. It is remarkable what it can do with either 1.4TC AND the 2.0TC.
The above shot with the EOS 400/5.6 I keep for the little Canon M5.
I have been lurking here long enough and got the Upload and Sell activated. I'm from over at the Nikonians site but having sold ALL my Nikon DSLR gear for Sony A I needed a new home. This site and others encouraged trying mirrorless and I first went A6500/10-18/16-70 for my travel kit. Two weeks of a vacation and was sold - on EVF, mirrorless and Sony.
An A9 and FE 100-400 GM are now my wildlife setup and loving them. Here is one wet Osprey with the 1.4x thrown on and the whole mess handheld out the car window between rain showers...

Robert, have you considered starting your own Museum of Photography? You have enough photographic equipment to do that.
