* They may not be quite as good as what I've seen posted from the 12-24G though

It would be quite disappointing if the 12-24/4 @16mm has better resolution than the 16-35GM @16mm at similar apertures. From your early samples, I can already tell the new 16-35GM is way better than the 16-35/4 ZA at 35mm.
I've pre-ordered one and will be testing it as well.

I just did a quick test for vignetting. I wouldn't use these files for sharpness testing as the shutter speed was low and some of the branches were moving. Having said that, I focused on the palm fronds in the center of the image but didn't spend much time on them so you may well see that one will be sharper out in the distance and the other sharper closer to the camera.

Comparison at f/2.8 and f/4 vs the Loxia with all Lightroom profile corrections off (it still says 'Built in lens profile applied' for both lenses): http://bit.ly/2utxQCu

And a photo of the same scene at 16mm f/2.8: http://bit.ly/2uqvm9l

I hope this helps... It's been raining non-stop for 3 days now so I haven't been able to test this lens as much as I wanted. Hopefully Viramati and Fred can upload something useful soon!

The Loxia is indeed a marvel but all the same mine went today in exchange for the new GM as it hardly got any use over the last year as I even found the Zony 16-35 to be so much more versatile. Have great hopes so far for the GM even though it won't have the ultimate IQ of the Loxia I think in real world use it will be more than enough

The 16-35GM is on shelves here now but given Australian retailers won't let us return lenses because we don't like them I dare not buy it without more performance info.

Come on Lensrentals, bring on the MTF charts!

So far mine is looking good. I would say that I have changed the way I deal with de-centered etc lenses I now send them back to be serviced and corrected rather than trying another copy. At least this is how I handled the Loxia 21 when it had issues. Also my dealer who knows me lets me take the lens out for half an hour and then I download the files in store on my laptop to check them, this way I tried out 3 Batis 18's and they were all soft towards the edges. Anyway I find it hard to believe that a store anywhere in the world can refuse to accept the return of a faulty item which is the case of any lens that is outside tolerances especially something as 'quality' as a GM lens

We in the U.S. are really spoiled by the liberal return policy of almost everything (except cars, maybe). In many parts of the world, as soon as you walk out of the door, it's yours to keep.

Maybe but surely if an item is 'faulty' or 'not too within manufactures parameters' or in this case obviously not too the specifications that are to be expected you can ask for a replacement or at least for it to be serviced/corrected. I presume that you have to be able to prove that the item is not 'fit for it's intended use'

There was a brief break in the clouds here so I did another test.

This one compares:

* 16-35 GM
* 16-35 ZA
* Loxia 21
* Samyang 14/2.8 MF

At 14, 16, 20/21, 24 and 35mm and is shot diagonally so that the extreme corners can be evaluated. I manually focused on the top left corner of each image (as I was particularly keen to see how flat the field was compared to the Loxia -- in hindsight after checking that I should have focused more conventionally but by the time I figured that out I needed to head out).

Some things I've noticed:

* The GM has a flatter field than the Loxia 21
* The Loxia has sharper extreme corners, but field curvature means that this affects the center
* The Samyang 14mm is a great performer at f/8

I'd be interested to get others' views on what they can tell from the images and constructive criticism of my methodology (I don't really test lenses much).

I'm quite interested in the 16-35, but there seem to be a decent amount of vignetting concerns at 16 wide open, though I assume that's to be expected to some extent.

Yes there is some vignetting wide open at 16mm but the lens profile in LrCC corrects any that there is. The lens is a definite step up form the 16-35/4 in the extreme corners and is close enough to the Loxia 21 not to really matter in real world use.

Viramati,
Could you do a quick coma test at 16mm and 21mm wide open?

I assume this is in response to my post above yours?

I wasn't actually meaning retailers won't let us return faulty items here, just that they won't let us return a lens because we don't like it. I haven't seen any comprehensive assessment of how the GM performs yet so if it turns out the performance of a good copy is not worth the $3500AUD price tag I'd be stuck with it.

We can return faulty items, although convincing the store worker that a lens with a soft corner or two is faulty can often be a battle in itself. I've returned many lenses as bad samples in Australia and it's never once been easy. Always got my refund or exchange in the end but it's a battle. If it's "faulty" in the sense that any idiot can see why - for eg it just doesn't work - then it's no problem but when you start trying to explain decentred elements or poor MTF compared to how it "should" be it can be a battle to get the store to accept it as a fault.

Thanks for the clarification. So far I would say mine is a worthy replacement of my FE16-35 and Loxia 21. I also traded in my Fuji X-Pro 2 and XF 23/1.4 which were getting no use, so essentially I haven't had to lay out any money to purchase it. As yet I haven't taken any images with it that a worthy of putting on the net but my copy appears to be well centered and is giving my the IQ and look I would expect from a GM lens. I will leave it to others to do comparison and technical tests

So far I am seeing little coma at all settings but haven't done a specific test looking for it but leaf edges and small branches against a bright background are looking good. Will come back to you with more when I have taken more images

To me it is amazing how well the Samyang 14mm does at f8. Sharpest of them all, and widest of them all. I refer to the comparison above, comparing the 16-35GM with the L21 and the Samyang 14mm

The Samyang seems to punch way above it's price range and from that point of view is a no brainer (I have the Smayang 12/f2 for my fuji) but I see that the GM is only 100gm's heavier which is quite an achievement for a 2.8 zoom

rather than start a new thread, thought I would post here. I shoot weddings mostly, and some astro stuff. I really want an astro lens but one I can use for events. I currently have Sigma 18-35 (crop) and 10-18F4OSS, a 28FE, and a 35F1.4. Since getting the 35, I've been shooting full frame 4K on the A9. Does it make sense to dump the 10-18, 18-35, 28 w/21mm adapter and just get the 16-35? I like the 28 for size, its great, but i know i wouldn't hesitate to take the zoom anywhere. And, could the 16-35 replace the Zeiss 1.4? I was using the 18-35 on my A7r2 in APS-C mode for 4K video, but they are no longer my main cameras.

Did some coma tests tonight and the summary is that apart from the extreme corners, the GM does an OK job at 16mm and a decent one at 20mm. Not quite as good as the Loxia 21 or Samyang 14. Some light cloud cover came across as I was doing the Loxia images and blocked out the stars before I could get the Samyang out.
